    I hiked the AT in 1970, Georgia to Maine! It was strenuous but fun. BTW, my pack weighed upwards of 50 pounds. I did the PCT in 1972 also.

      Robert Winkler, just happened to read your post today (a cold and rainy Sunday.) Ever thought of putting together your own video? I for one would love to see your photos and gear list. I am sure I am not alone. After discovering the great videos out there from today's hikers, I was compelled to revisit my hike and gear from the late seventies and 1980. Give it a look: ua-cam.com/video/bweYIzKIHJc/v-deo.html Sharing your history will be a welcome addition to AT lore. After all, the two of us belong in the AT museum!

      I would love to see that video too! Thru hiking back then had to be way more difficult. Hikers on the AT today have so many more conveniences especially in the towns with all the hostels etc.

      Back then I looked like (and was) a hippie so the townspeople mostly were extremely rude. So I just restocked and got the hell out of town...every night for 5 1/2 months was spent under my army shelter half.

    I first found your channel through the AT hike sections. I enjoy your vids and sharing your adventures to many places I may not ever get to see in person. Thanks for sharing some of your backstory, I have wondered how your got your 'start'. Change is not always a bad thing, but an open door for a whole new life. Many blessings to you.

      Carolyn K Really glad you have enjoyed my channel. Yeah I was always a bit nervous to be more personal in my videos due to a variety of factors. But I’ve decided to be more open. After the hike I had to make a ton of tough decisions and it wasn’t easy but 4 years later I know that those tough times were completely worth it. Thanks for watching.

    Great tips... Thank you for sharing. I don't know if I ever had the will and stamina to do the AT, but I read a lot of books about it when I was younger and dreamed about it. Getting married and becoming a parent definitely shifted my priorities. I was thrilled when I discovered your AT videos, because it gave me a chance to have a visual window into the reality of the hike.

    Main reason I wouldn't hike the AT is because there's too much pressure on it, already. I like to be far enough out, that I can build a small fire and not make any dent in the landscape.
    I get how you'd want to be lower impact on such a heavily used trail. And I also get that it's better to have a lot of people on the one trail, than to have them tracking up every square mile of the landscape. Just that some people's idea of being with Nature is to be the only human.
    I just see how easy it would be to map out your trip from one convenience store to the next, rather than packing and preparing your own food. It fits with keeping your impact low on the landscape. But it's a terrible way to nourish your body. Yes, you need lots of calories. You should be far more fit at the end of the trip than be worrying about dropping weight.
    For me, a lot of the pleasure of being out there is that you have all the time in the world to prepare your meals, and none of civilization's endless distractions. When I'm out in wilderness situations, I eat the same or BETTER, because the meals are such a huge part of the day. But I've done most of my camping in relatively remote wilderness, where a small fire isn't as much impact as it would be on the AT which is more of a social event than a wilderness experience.

    Why you shouldn't hike the AT without carrying a External frame backpack . . .and yes you can carry a 10 lb gear load or less...with a external frame backpack...
    You shouldn't thru hike without a external frame backpack because, they are the best backpack for long distances backpacking....most of them come with a life time warranty...With a external frame backpack...you will walk in a more up right position...you will have more air flow between your backpack and your back...an external frame backpack as more support for your back as you walk. . .a external frame backpack is a real backpack and not a bag with straps attached....with a external frame backpack you will be doing long distant backpacking and not thru hiking...and what backpack would Colin Fletcher use? Of course an external frame backpack....

    I will be 67 next year and I'm thinking about trying a thru-hike... but I have watched people hiking for the last 2 or 3 years... and seems like most of them are burnt out the last month or so and this want to finish

    • @djg5950
      @djg5950 6 років тому +6

      I've followed a few this year too (and many including Redbeard in past years). I think, especially after listening to him, that one reason people get burnt out in Maine is because they had a deadline or wanted to finish by a certain date and that was just too much for them. If they SLOW down and enjoy the scenery more I think they would enjoy the whole hike more. No one (before this year; at least no VLOGGER) has ever said that they wished they had done it faster. Redbeard did it right. He took his time and enjoyed himself instead of pushing himself to the max every day just to finish.

      Agreed 100%! Never could understand trailrunners… Not sure where you're from, but have you ever seen a pine marten? I got a fantastic pic of two in a tree near a summit, not more than 5 feet away! If you're familiar with them, you know that they're very shy- you'd never see one by hurrying along a trail.

    • @djg5950
      @djg5950 6 років тому +2

      WMH I live in NH and have camped at Baxter many times. I've only seen a pine marten once and it was before sunrise (still dark out) as I was hurrying along the trail to get to Sandy Stream Pond for sunrise. I know of some people (photographer friends) that have taken pictures of pine martens near Kidney Pond campground. From what they said they were fairly acclimated to people in that area and easy to see. Don't think this is still happening, though (it was years ago). I was interested in watching the moose and getting shots of them. Reread your comment and I laughed because that is exactly how I spotted animals; weasels, martens, and even a mink once. I was hurrying along the trail just as it was getting light and saw movement in a tree. Stopped to see what it was a few times. The weasel darted out from the woods along the river bank (full daylight) and was after something. Never saw what it was that he was after; he disappeared that quickly when he saw me.

      WMH BTW, I just reported both of Mikey Mikes comments to UA-cam as being "hate comments or graphic". They removed them from my view and taking into consideration of removing them and blocking this guy from commenting further (what it said it would do if found offensive or guilty of breaking UA-cam's policy). This guy will have to go somewhere else to spread his homophobic hate comments. Good-bye Mikey Mike. Get help. (To the right of every comment there is three dots, if you click on that you can have a comment removed and the person blocked. We don't have to wait for Redbeard to do that).

      Hi Deborah (my name's Steve, BTW). I'm a resident of Mass, but don't be too alarmed- my heart is in NH! Haven't been to Baxter yet, but would love to do the Knife Edge to summit Katahdin someday. About two months ago, I was returning from Owl's Head (where I saw the martens) and took a side trail to the Black Pond Trail. Came around a corner, and there was a huge bull moose about 30 feet from me. Asked him politely to move. He declined. Took another path instead....

However, I really enjoy my career and life in general right now. I don't want that to be ruined by post-trail depression or something similar. I'm just want some adventure before starting a 9-5 desk job. Would I be jeopardizing my life satisfaction by thru hiking?

    Do hikers ever take dogs with them and shorten their daily distances ?
    Or carry smaller dogs ?
    Questions may seem silly but I am sure they are confused when their human companions are gone for so long !
    And most large athletic dogs would love the adventure ! I guess you would have to pull a wagon to carry enough food and water......😁

      Many hikers bring their dogs along on long distance hikes, but be aware that some national parks/forests *do not allow pets on property.
      Maine: Baxter State Park.
      New York: Bear Mountain State Park.
      Tennessee and North Carolina: Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
      The rules & policies change yearly so verify before you go.

      sPatrick P Thank you.
      Are there any particular Appalachian and /or Long Trail advice and/or guide books that you would recommend ?
      How often do you leave the trail to get supplies ?
      How accessible are supplies and fresh clean water ?
      Showers ?
      Are there any organized campgrounds along the way ?
      What about Rangers ?
      How safe is it for a single female to go alone ?
      I have wilderness camped out in the northwest, however, that was before I learned about the disappearances .. etc.
      And I did not have the responsibility of caring for a dog, and making sure that they were well fed/watered and were safe from parasites, predators and snakes. Also I would have to make sure that they did not over exert themselves.
      Also, are there alternate places to stay if the weather turned very bad ? I was surprised to find how many hostels that were accessible in the northwest, if you had a car to get to them.....and I do not know if an of them would have allowed dogs.
      Etc.......I'll check the books this weekend while you write yours !
      Any particular places you recommend camping this time of year, especially for the sake of Peak Autumn colors. A lot of campgrounds in the Northwest are desolate and feel unsafe this time of year.
      We would love to hear more stories about your adventures and learn from your experiences.
      And more photographs and videos would be greatly appreciated !
      Thanks !

      @seaotter52 3 роки тому

      Rosemarie,
      To answer your question, if you mean specialized climbing techniques like you need for bouldering or sport climbing, the answer is no. Nothing that technical. If you mean "climbing" around on rocks and on some steep terrain. Yes. Blind people have done it. Old people, amputees, rookies starting south from Mt Katahdin, sisters who went barefoot, the list goes on. There are highly experienced hikers who did not finish. There are people who unwrapped and set up their tent for the first time the first night on the trail who finish their thru-hike. If you plan and train and learn about your gear and yourself, you increase your chances of success. Find hills and knarly terrain and practice on them working up to a full pack weight. Get upper body strength with push ups and pull ups(if you need to, do let downs until you get stronger) to go along with your leg and core work. Good luck and maybe I'll see you on the trail Here's some ideas www.backpacker.com/skills/fitness
      Added : check out women who have hiked the AT on UA-cam like Homemade Wanderlust aka Dixie and many others.

      @@djg5950 : To you, this video is against a backdrop of the videos that went before. Casual stumblers-across could easily be disappointed seeing this video as a standalone, given its headline. Redbeard also talks to you in shorthand, because you follow him and get him.
      Do you follow the other guy who's done the AT, but with a tarp, instead? I think tarp > tent for versatility and ease of use. He said "tent" in passing in the video, and that's where I'd depart. Anyway, that other guy, ... Looking... Here: Evan's Backpacking Videos. Do YT search. This guy has some cool ideas, like carrying an umbrella as part of his kit. Uses it like a tent pole or quick shelter. Easier than digging out a rain shell if it's just a squall, or keep the rain off you while you dig out the shell. Plus he incorporated a sword, zip-line gun, like James West used, and the obligatory fire-starter, flamethrower and dart-gun kit.
      Heh. No. But he did use it as a tent-pole and even as a door, to make getting in and out easier, without letting in the weather. It is enlightening what Evan and Redbeard consider essential kit.
      I'm a generation older than Redbeard and Evan. And to me, it's a treat to cook over a small open fire. On the AT, I wouldn't feel free to do that. I'd use a home-made down-draft gasifier wood stove out of a 1-quart paint can and a Progresso (C) Soup can. Being able to make hot tea is huge for the morale and that's about as non-invasive and efficient as you can make it.

    Thanks for this video. I’m about to finish up my undergrad and I’ve been thinking a lot about life. I really want to hike the AT (I live in Maine) but I’m worried about my student debt and getting stuck in a job where my free spirit just wants to do stuff like this. This video was enlightening and I’ll definitely be doing some more research!

I can't seem to find true happiness or stick to anything in my life and I'm so young. I was napping in my hammock today, staring off at the mountains (I'm from Hendersonville, NC) and it dawned on me. I want solitude, the full immersion in nature. The challenge. I think it'd be amazing. So..I'm starting my research. Great video.

    Thank you for your perspective and encouragement to experience and enjoy the outdoors, along with the new people that hikers can meet. I am glad that you mentioned the situation with Bismark. It is as important to take precautions to guard your safety as it is to enjoy the outdoors. Criminals on the run or even out hunting for a victim, often stay out of mainstream civilization and sometimes retreat to the wilderness because it is far less likely that they would encounter law enforcement out there. It is enriching to invite people to be a friend, but use some caution and critique before extending your full trust toward them. Ask some friendly questions and look for inconsistencies. Remember, you really don't know this new person yet and you don't know their background. The person could be a violent criminal, a criminal involved in property crimes, or you may even come across a drug operation and the person you meet may want to keep you quite to protect their crop or factory. Public land has often been used for growing marijuana or manufacturing street drugs by organized crime groups. Be safe, be prepared and enjoy being out in nature.

    • @RedBeard0924
      @RedBeard0924  6 років тому +1

      R V yes you are right about that. Bismark portrayed himself as someone he was not. Always inviting others to attend church in towns with him and Hopper but he also gave off weird vibes to me as he frequently critiqued other hikers and always was accusing others of skipping etc to the point of obsession. You are so right about be cautious, there were some dangerous individuals on trail in ‘14. Maybe I’ll do a video just talking about some of the nut jobs I met including a young man revealing himself to women on trail. Be careful out there! ✌️

    It seems like a big commitment but how long have most people been in the same job, getting up most mornings and doing the same routines.
    6 months is a long time but you have to spend that 6 months doing something.
    Money is probably the biggest hurdle for me, I have really pruned my budget back, living more simply at home while I am working. Hopefully this will help me save heaps and prepare me better for living simply on the trail.
    It should also give me plenty of time to decide on which through hike to do. I’m thinking PTC or NZ at the moment.

    Your AT hike was the first one that I ever watched and it was a great series of videos. Same with regular shorter backpacking trips. After a few years you will want to keep doing more miles and then a tru-hike gets very tempting. Quitting a job with house payments would be the hardest part.
