    Very cool - literally and figurative. Hammock portable in the summer shade is clearly more comfortable than - 40 C in a blizzard.

      Yes, the IC-705 is compared to many rigs like FT-81x, KX2/3, ... but really stands alone. We might even call it the apex of portable ham radio today. It was designed from the field operator perspective, rather than some abstract idea from engineer who has never been in the field.
      Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Hi Julian,
    You have made so many great videos about portable gear, but if you had to decide on just one man packable/portable radio and computer what would you choose?
    From what I have seen I really like the TX-599 since it appears to have an extremely simple user interface, but it lacks a built-in sound card. The IC-705 looks like a fantastic and proven radio. The Xeigu is interesting, but I'm not totally sold on it. I am really hoping to find something that is very simple to use, quick to deploy, small and compact, yet not super limited in capability. It would be nice to find a radio that is super simple on its own, but when coupled with a computer could provide much more advanced features. I only just heard about the TX-599 today and fell in love as soon as I saw it, but maybe there are other radios I have yet to hear about that I should consider as well? I would love to replace my FT-897 with something much smaller, much lighter, and much easier to navigate the menus.

    What case are you using for the Surface? I bought a Youtec one from Amazon but the port openings for the USB-C are too small for the Microsoft brand USB-C to USB-A adapter. I guess I could Dremel out the opening but don’t have one at the moment.

    Julian, i am curious where the ground wire on your 705 goes to?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  2 роки тому

      You'll have to be a bit more specific. Let's see if I can guesstimate what you mean. When I'm portable I don't necessarily use the ground lug on the 705. When it is in use, it is attached to a tent stake and pushed into the soil. When operating from home, the ground lug goes to my ground network, terminating at a copper rod driven several meters down into the ground. When operating mobile, the ground lug attaches to the chassis of the vehicle. I hope this answers the question.

      Pskmail was amazing. Open source, multi-platform, ... It has not aged well in comparison. Fewer gateways and limited modes has forced users to more up to date options. I wish it would be rejuvenated.

    Is there special settings for VARA to work wireless? I can get it to work when hooked up to USB. I am using surface pro with windows 10. I can get it to transmit but ALC does not show signal. Any thoughts would be great. I have the IC 705 with the newest software from ICOM and firmware. Thanks

    Any recommendations as to what to use a sound card interface with an SGC2020 to run VERA? I currently use a first gen Tigertronics USB but after reading info on their website I see that the old style audio transformers within the unit are incapable of working this mode. Also would you know of any EU supplier of the Headway cells used in your power banks?
    Thanks

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  3 роки тому +1

      Let's start with the Headway cells that's easy. shop.lipopower.de unfortunately it's in German, but they do have Google translate on the site.
      The latest audio interface on my bench is the Digirig mobile. It's incredibly small but runs Vara extremely well. www.digirig.net it has both audio interface and Cat control. You can make the cables yourself or ask if there are compatible cables from them. Finally it has a single USB cable from the interface to your computer.

    Great video Julian. How is your antenna wire routed from the top of the AH-705? At 2:35 in the video it appears the wire goes down. Does it lead to the base of the mast and then go up? Just wondering.

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  3 роки тому +1

      That's exactly how it was routed. It went down to the bottom of the Mast, then up the center to the top. I wanted to drill a hole in the mask for the wire but haven't had the nerve to do it yet😂
