  • Visit OctaneReport.com for more. We pay a visit to HRE Wheels and check out a bit of their production process for forged wheels. Needless to say, we were mostly interested in seeing their monoblock Grand-Am champion wheels and centerlock Porsche units.

Isnt a forged wheel supposed to be a stamped block? Isnt this just a billet machined wheel?

    • @CaseAgainstFaith1
      @CaseAgainstFaith1 7 років тому +7

I could be wrong. But, I understand that the original slug is created under very high pressure. That is what is meant by forged. And then machined out of the forged block is how it is made.

A forged billet can be and must be machined to exact specifications. There isn't a machine in existence that can stamp out these types of wheels without the use of CNC's. Other cheaper wheels are poured "cast"aluminum (without forging) and then machined to final dims. Hammering metal billets into forgings are stronger, tougher and expensive to produce. About 90% of all wheels produced are "cast" not "forged".

For some reason I thought this video would have something about forging...

Forged blanks are CNC'ed - Made In The USA, great quality! Sure they cost a bit more than some Chinese look-alike, but if you're going around a bend at 170+, don't you want a good wheel?

they also didn't show the forging press so i'm guessing the forged discs are purchased from some one else.

I love almost every wheel design HRE makes, but I hear from wheel gurus on forums that they know ppl who owned HREs had their tires slip out of position at the tire bead area of the rim. Any truth to this?

  • @zeroswings2

@flippinferdie1 if it's true I could believe it... there are U.S. and European rim and tire bead profile standards

whoooo gives a flying fuck HRE still makes in my opinion the one of the highest quality wheels one can get for their ride, if they can still maintain a certain level a quality and class with older machines, id say props to them

Quick question how much a Cnc machine cost N all the rest of the equipment to make a rim i been curious and i cant find a answer, all this stuff cost.

+Mark Valebcia About $500,000.00 for machine and tooling dies. Then someone that can program CNC machines.

  • @ToolmannCNC

Not that impressive folks, notice they don't show the milling of the centers, the speeds and feeds they show in other videos are low and slow. The tool holders are from 1970. Toyoda makes a low end machine with marginal life cycle and maintenance costs....they will see in time buying on price is a mistake. sure looks like room for improvements, to increase effiencey, and reduce costs. HREs are nice looking wheels, but if you tour some of the competitors plants they nailed it

HRE have been around a while, and, this guy knows at least a little bit. Enough to point out that these guys are using cheap machines, and cheap machines are almost never as good as expensive ones.
Even simpler than that is basic human psychology. The chap with the good gear is more likely to know what he's doing than the chap with the cheap tat.

Can you make 20x18w and 20x14w wheels aprx: 8 inch backspace solid center needs to look like an Alcoa super single wheel with a ford 8 bolt pattern F350 Can you do this? I would need 3 of each wheel. I want a spare for each size. Drop me an e mail thanks.

yep, at my work we first bought a Toyoda was the biggest hunk of junk, after that they learnt makino all the way! last three years we have installed 21 a51's they are far superior.

It’s only a rim, the accuracy doesn’t have to be that good. There is no need to machine it to the micron.

Ian Jimenez digging up old vid's but... local company near me is still forging upper and lower receivers from 7075 al for military m16s and civilian ar15s to the tune of over half a million of em a year on National MaxiPres machines that are close to 100 years old. a machine was never called a 'craftsman' and you don't need the latest a greatest hammer to build a house.

Seriously? You don't know what forged stock is? Could machine a piece of cast metal too. I think it is you who needs to differentiate. Forged steel and machining are two different things altogether.
