  • Bess Ward, William J. Sinclair Professor of Geosciences and the Princeton Environmental Institute, reports on her research from the Pacific Ocean into the microbial processes that produce and consume atmospheric nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. The ocean emits up to half of all natural nitrous oxide, a strong greenhouse gas and a potent destroyer of the ozone layer. Ward explores the implications for nitrous oxide fluxes in a warmer world caused by human-made climate change.
