  • 1958 A big road trip! Vernon, Kamloops, Chilliwack, Sumas, Calgary, Blairmore, Ellensburg and more. BC, Alberta, Washington State.
Parts of this 1958 Kodachrome reel make look familiar, I've re-transferred and remastered the half hour 16mm reel to include all the sights this intrepid driver cameraman captured on this BC, Alberta, Washington State road trip. Vernon, Kamloops, the Hope-Princeton highway, Chilliwack, Sumas border crossing, Calgary, Frank Slide, Blairmore, and Ellensburg Washington State. Many of the shops, motels and businesses along this 2000+ kilometre route have long since faded away but the memories haven't. Highways have been improved, widened and even renamed. The big Detroit cars with fins and chrome are now collector items themselves, replaced by modern more efficient vehicles. This was an ambitious road trip four years before completion of the Rogers Pass in 1962.
The reel sourced in Los Angeles in 2015 was marked simply and mysteriously "Canada". Who captured this will likely never be known, but we can thank him for his ingenuity and tenacity in capturing this wonderful footage.

Well done...Nostalgia with every emotion possible all throughout your film. Oh how I wish that I was, even at my age now, was back then when I was 10, I could experience that golden, innocent time now..... Still, the memories of traveling back in 1958 remain with me still...Love your films and subscribing to your channel...I look forward to the next one! Thank you... :)

This is a great visit to the past. A lot has changed. So much less traffic. Kamloops must have been prosperou, judging by the number of brand new 1958 cars seen there. In Chilliwack most of the cars look older. Forgot about bug screens. They've been added later to the Lincoln's front to protect it from all those prairie flying insects. Thanks for sharing.

yeah bug screens. Remember a big one on my dad's 56 Pontiac. Would take it off every fall and install "frost shields (small plastic storm windows if you will) on side and rear windows.

Excellent video,, or film ??? Reminds me a lot like family vacations in the 60s ,My mother would make my Dad get off the Divided Freeway system in the states and travel the old 2 lane blacktops like in this film so she could stop in all the little towns ., Sure brought back memories.

At 8:00, it looks like the old J. Walsh & Sons building in Valleyview. At 6:41, the BA sign was the sign for my wife's uncles' gas station and garage - "Nabata Bros."

2:25 is just above Kekuli Bay campsite on Kalamalka Lake as you approach Vernon from the South. You can still drive on portions of the old highway from Kekuli Bay to the Coldstream lookout.

For months I've wondered where the motel was in Valleyview, at 8:11 in the video. After 2 hours of looking at Google maps and this video, I'm confident I've figured it out. The Lord of Life Lutheran Church sits now on the site of the old motel, on Sunset Drive and the house to the left of the motel is still there today. I love sleuthing! Thanks Francois for your valuable work.

At 3:21, a lovely Canadian Pacific freight truck rolls by in the oncoming lane.

US 99 as a 2 lane highway in 1958. Where in Washington was that? It looks like what is now Burlington Boulevard approaching the Skagit bridge going into Mt Vernon. In 1956 there definitely was a space between Mt. Vernon and Burlington. But the USGS topos of 1956 show that 99 was four lane through the entire Skagit Valley. The four lane bypass at Burlington along the future I-5 route had already been built. So where this 2 lane stretch is a mystery to me! At 18:39 the sign reads "Sedro-Wooley / Burlington". Signs announcing the junction with 99 can be seen. The split four lane highway is the future Washington State Route 20.

11:28 If the Tower Ranch Cafe was at East Gate of Manning Park, an emergency airstrip is on the opposite side of the highway along with a bunch of family cabins. I remember that restaurant burned down sometime before 1978. I think it was known as the Gateway Cafe and after the fire, someone had propped up the front door and put a sign on it that said "Gateway Cafe: Closed due to fire.", which was was sad but funny because the rest of the building was in ashes.

Way before my time so I find it very interesting. He drives past two car dealerships, one is GM and one is Ford but both of the signs look like they are Brown not the Blue I've have always known them to be.
