There is no greater personal joy for me than to watch an incredibly divisive movie and scroll through 1 star reviews. This movie and Ghost Story have some of the best 1 star reviews from people who are so media illiterate it's amazing they can even remember to breathe.

Good video! I agree that it wasn't that "weird", but I suspect that if one views it without any understanding of or insight into the queer experience as it were, it may seem... well, weird. Either that or they lack either ability to imagine being in the position of someone different from them, media literacy, or both.
That said, to me as a nonbinary person, I saw it a couple nights ago and was absolutely stunned. Hell, I'm still reeling. The juxtaposition of Owen apologising to everyone at the end and Maddie telling him not to apologise so much earlier struck me particularly hard.
I think it's quite interesting that it's classified as a horror drama, because IMO it really isn't a horror film in the traditional sense. The trappings of horror are used for non-horror effect, like The Pink Opaque's referencing of Buffy, Are you afraid of the dark, Pete & Pete, So Weird, and similar shows, whereas to me the actual horror is far less traditional horror and far more the existential terror of a life unfulfilled, knowing that you missed out on being your true self because you were afraid to lose what comfort you already had and risking hurting people around you.
(Also, just a quick note: Jane Schoenbrun uses they/them pronouns!)
