I own both 13 and 15. Pick the 13 if you need more portability (eg, running between work meeting rooms, and/or travel). Buy the 15 if you need more power and screen realestate. Biggest downside to my 15 is the weight, its a pain to carry around, can't imagine how heavy the 17 would be

    Hello TheTechChap (TTC),
Came to this review after watching the TallyHoTech channel as this was automatically recommended by UA-cam.
    Now,
I have seen a video of Dell xps 13 9300 (10th Gen) wherein it has a lot of issues like:
1.) Sleep mode NOT working infact the Dell xps 13 9300 gets heated up like a fryer inside the backpack even in sleep mode (refuses to sleep i guess).
2.) Then there is the Windows Hello Face and/or Windows Hello Fingerprint unlock refusing to detect/work while waking it from sleep (a restart is required to solve this problem).
3.) The battery drain issue as well on the xps 13 9300 model eating/ draining battery even in sleep mode.
Wirh all these issues for such a premium laptop brand like Dell, I wud go for the M1 Macbook Air 13" (my current is also a early 2k14 MBA 13") running on Catalina.
Can you please confirm or deny if you also facing such issues in the older (10th gen) dell xps 13 9300 or the newer dell xps 13 (11th gen)?
    Thanks in advance...

Dell XPS 15 still has terrible QC. I've bought 4 now, all of which have issues.
    1. laptop didn't stay closed when held up vertically
    2. wobbly trackpad issue that Dell said they fixed back in June
    3. laptop didn't stay closed and a wobbly trackpad
    4. has spots on the touchpad where if you tap, it thinks you're clicking and holding and begins to highlight the page
It's a great laptop, so if you don't need a laptop right away I think it's worth playing the lottery, but be aware that your first one might have problems

I've suffered the same fate with 2 XPS 15's. First one had the trackpad issue which they wanted to send a technician to fix even though the laptop was 5 days old.
Eventually they sent a replacement which again had the trackpad issue as well as the lid not closing. Dell tried to make out the lid problem was normal even though the first one was fine and really fussed over giving me a refund.
I had to wait 3 weeks after the return to finally receive my refund. Disgusting customer service for such premium laptops at the prices they charge.

So, what's with that charging issue that XPS 17 can't manage charging via USB-C? Did the company fix it? Should people buy this model or wait for the next iteration? I wanted to order one, but all distributors I deal with persuaded me that none of them going to import XPS 17 in my country due to terrible charging problems. They said that premium laptops must be perfect since people pay a lot and nobody want to replace them.

This might help people out that are looking to buy the dell xps 15 9500.
I bought the xps 15 9500 on 27th Dec 2020 but i only received it on 28th Jan 2021. It arrived from china. Seems to be a delay but i didn't mind waiting.
Before i start one thing really bugs me is the quality of the webcam. I didn't see any reviews on the webcam before i bought the laptop. The webcam is really qutie grainy and my 10 year old dell xps laptop is 100 times better in webcam quality. I did not expect this from a top of the range laptop. When i researched this further, i found out that the bad quality is due dell choosing a bottom of the barrel sensor for the camera and becuase the camera has to fit in the very small bezel. Some suggestions were to buy a seperate web camera which made a huge difference. Personally, i don't want to go through the hassle of returning the laptop for the webcam so if i intend to use it alot, i will probably buy a webcam to plug in via usb. However i am very disappointed at the webcam quality (0.9MP max) for such an expensive lapotp.
I bought mine in silver i7 16gb 1tb, and the trackpad issue of it being loose is not there. I am happy i went for the matt screen and not the UHD screen. It does get a little warm on the left hand side of the laptop if im using it for a long period.
The trackpad sometimes doesn't register my right click, not sure why. When i try clicking in the bottom right corner of the trackpad it sometimes doesnt register it, it's intermittent but it seems to have gone away now since i started using the laptop more. If the issue persists i will update this comment.
Other than that the laptop has been great and the sound quality is great to.
    Hopefully this will help someone.

The problem with the trackpad wobble/double-click on the Dell XPS 15 (9500) has emphatically NOT been fixed. Once Dell finally acknowledged the defect, they claimed they had resolved it and that as of June, it was no longer an issue on shipping units. That was a flat out lie. I ordered a Dell XPS 15 in October and it arrived with the same defective trackpad issue that Dell claimed to have resolved. I contacted them immediately. At first, they denied that it was in fact EVER an issue (never mind all the reports on the various review sites - you can go to Dell's own support site and find their acknowledgement of it along with their false claim that it is no longer a problem). I didn't budge and they agreed to replace the model for me (which took a whole month after I had waited a month for the initial unit). When the second unit arrived, it too had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I was disgusted and returned them both for a refund. Then in November, Dell had a sale on again and I thought (stupidly) "hmmm... they MUST have fixed the issue by now" so I ordered another unit on November 13. It finally showed up on December 23. I pulled it out of the box and guess what - IT HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. That's three units, all three with the same defective trackpad, all shipped long after Dell claimed to have fixed the problem. If quality control and user experience matter at all to you, do NOT BUY the Dell XPS 15. Dell's QC on this unit, not to mention their dishonesty in claiming to have fixed this problem and their UTTER CONTEMPT for their customers in continuing to ship defective units while advertising it as a premium product should not be rewarded with your hard-earned cash. Look elsewhere for your solution.

I have had around 15 x XPS 17`s now all of which have been returned to Dell due to either bad finishing on screen surround, palmrest, or scratches on the aluminium, and on the 4 x that didn`t exhibit any damage or were not faulty out of the box, they ALL developed a screen fault within one month of arrival which was either a bright pixel somewhere or in the last case a black intermittent vertical line from top to bottom of the screen approx two thirds of the way across. I should add that all my orders were with the 4K+ touchscreen as I didn`t think it was worth getting if the screen was just HD.
I have since ordered and had delivered a new Dell XPS 8950 desktop with the latest i9 Alder Lake processor with a 10Gb RTX 3080 GPU and 32Gb of RAM, and which including a 27 inch 4K screen (I bought an HP due to Dell constantly delaying my orders for their 27 inch UHD) and which has absolutely no issues whatsoever and was a few hundred GBP pounds LESS than the fault-laden XPS 17 and it knocks spots off the XPS 17 in terms of performance using Adobe After Effects and rendering video in Adobe Premiere Pro. Not only that, but if anything goes wrong with the Desktop I won`t need to replace or send the complete unit anywhere (hopefully).

All I want is a 15 inch laptop that has 16gb ram, 512gb storage, a battery life which is good enough for uni (so long battery life) with a 1080p screen. I won't use the trackpad if I can help it and of course I would like a good keyboard (as long as people don't think its bad I'm good with it).

I've very recently bought a Dell XPS 15 9500 and I want to share [DISCLAIMER: this is a very rough script I'm working on to push a video out]...
MY EXPERIENCE WITH XPS 15 9500
I like the XPS 15 9500, but I've already had SO MANY issues with it that I'm already thinking about switching...
The XPS 15 9500 is a beautiful device: I love its form factor with the 16:10 screen and the small bezels, and the design is nice (although I probably prefer MacBook Pro design and some HP Spectres).
The palmrest feels very nice , the speakers are very good (high volume, nice clarity and even some bass) and the keyboard is very nice, with good layout (although I have ISO-IT). The keyswitches have a pleasant tactile bump, probably even sharper than the one of the Gateron Brown switches of my mechanical keyboard (but the feeling is totally different, of course).
The trackpad is quite smooth and very large, which is quite comfortable in daily operation, athough you may get some occasional accidental touches.
The fact that the trackpad is so large, together with an imperfect internal design and POOR DELL QUALITY CONTROL means that some machines get an inconsistent touchpad with some wobble in one ore more of the corners. I had this issue, and Dell changed my entire pelmrest, but apparently this is not guaranteed to solve anything, as you may get a second touchpad with a similar defect (as it happened to me). You need to regulate and tighten some screws of the support of the touchpad (I let a Dell on-site technician do it and it solved the problem).
This problem was probably more prevalent in early batches (watch Mattew Moniz review), but apparently it's not 100% solved. When you get a properly working touchpad it's very good, though...
The UHD+ touch display is apparently very nice, from what I've learnt online, as it has good brightness and very nice color accuracy. I've chosen the FHD+ option because it was cheaper and it was supposed to guarantee better battery life (my experience with battery life is disappointing, though, I'll come back to it). The FHD+ screen is not as nice, though, in terms of resolution (obviously...), maximum brightness and color accuracy. My unit has also evident backlight bleed in the corners.
I've got the i7 10750H , 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, GTX 1650Ti configuration. I have to say that the specs are very decent, but the power management and especially the cooling could benefit from a redesign, as the machine still runs a bit hotter and loud if you push for performance. This was a bit expected considering the form factor, but could still be improved.
In my case, in lighter tasks and in coding the performance was not an issue for me, but the machine it struggled a bit in DaVinci Resolve with my Sony a6100 4K24p footage with some color correction.
The SSD and the RAM were fast enough for Illustrator and Lightroom work, and performance in Photoshop was fine.
The XPS 15 should also be fine if you want to use Linux, especialy Ubuntu stuff. I've read that it uses the same fingerprint sensor from the XPS 13 (which is Ubuntu certified by Canonical), and therefore you could even get the fingerprint sensor working in Linux.
That said, I also do music production with Ableton Live 10 Suite on Windows 10, and I use a Scarlett 2i4 2nd gen USB audio interface. I work both with MIDI (with different controllers) and audio (microphone and keyboards), and I' ve noticed that compared to my 2015 desktop with i5 6600K there's quite a bit of latency that limit the sample size and the buffer of the audio interface and make work frustrating. It may be a software thing, but I've read online that it's a common issue with XPS 15 and I' ve experienced from day one, with a new and fresh machine.
In terms of battery life, I' ve been disappointed.
When I received my laptop (and it came with 3 weeks of delay!) its battery was totally dead (it couldn't turn on). I had to charge it before being able to use it (and it's quite strange, as modern electronics usually come with about 30% battery or more), and I' ve noticed straightaway that I was getting poor battery life.
Official Italian Dell site states up to about 16 hours and 50 minutes of Netflix video playback (tested with the most basic XPS 15 configuration with i5, GTX 1650 and FHD+ screen, at a fixed screen brightness). In balanced mode, though, I was getting under 8 hours of VLC FHD content playback from local storage, which was quite unexpected.
I had to call Dell phone support and, at first, they told me that there were no issues (because it showed 100% battery health and the machine was new) and suggestedme to do 3 consecutive full charge-discharge cycles. I did it because they told me to do it, but I imagine that I hit the battery even harder with this procedure, as lithium batteries suffer if they discharge under about 15% and if they are charged over 80%. Anyway, it didn' t fix anything, so I called back the support.
They discovered that my laptop had an obsolete BIOS, so I had to do 2 BIOS updates. Unfortunately this solved basically nothing, so I called them again. They refused to recognize there was any issue, so after sending them a battery usage report that I was able to do in Windows WITHOUT THEIR HELP (they hadn't thought about it!), they decided to change me the battery and the palmrest (for the touchpad issue).
I have Pro Support, so I have on-site interventions.
The first technician, after having replaced the components, wasn' table to properly reassemble the device the first time, as the junction between the palmrest and the metal housing wasn't properly sealed. He had to disassemble the device a second time and close it again, but doing so he ripped a part of the new palmrest apart. And the trackpad issue was still there.
I've noticed it after he was gone, and I had to call phone support again.
Dell had to change me the palmrest a second time. Fortunately, it was a different technician who came at my place and did the work. He wasn' t able to properly seal the laptop body the first time, either, so he had to disassemble it again, too. The new palmrest still had the trackpad issue, but the technician was able to solve the issue by accurately tighten up the screws and the mount for the trackpad in the palmrest. Unfortunately, doing so, he forgot to plug the status LED in the motherboard (or covered the LED with something that doesn't let the light out), so that now I have no charging indicator of debug LED.
The second battery now is better than the first one, but I'm still a bit disapointed by the battery life as it doesn' t go past 8 hours.
I also contacted Dell phone support for other software-related questions and I've discovered that Dell phone operators do no have all the up-to-date information about BIOSes, features and schematics (one of them had to go to Dell US site to get informations about the position of the status LED on my machine because they had blueprint of older designs).
It's good that you can upgrade the RAM, and there's an empty slot for a second m.2 device, but this device is quite hard to open and reassemble it (as both technician showed). Dell phone support is hit or miss, and Dell on-site technicians have some problems to say the least. Dell quality control over complete devices and repair parts has a lot to be desired, too.
All considered, the XPS 15 is a very good device, with nice form factor and design and good enough performance for some workloads (unless you do heavy video editing or anything but very light music production), but it's quite hot and has many RELIABILITY ISSUES (you can find other XPS issues and design flaws around on the internet), especially if we factor in the (high) price it's sold at. The machine is still fine, and I might have been also unlucky, but you have to factor in that this device has some issues, and Dell support (especially not Pro) is far from being perfect. The Dell XPS 15 is still a relevant choice because there are very few true alternatives. But, before buying, ask yourself if you TRULY need this form factor, especially considering that there are many compelling devices with good screens and way better hardware (like Ryzen CPUs, which are superior).

I have a friend who is a long term Apple user but recently had to buy a Windows laptop for her degree. She bought the XPS15 and despite being such a nice looking laptop, she has had so many problems with it:
      - Random freezes where she has to restart the laptop manually with the power button
      - Coloured-pixelated images when watching videos, randomly
      - Trackpad of course (and it's not one of the first XPS15, she bought it a month or so ago)
From support they provided her some BIOS and drivers updates which haven't fixed any of the issues.
And that's suppose to be their most premium consumer laptops, I don't understand why they put so much effort in creating such a nice piece of hardware and then through everything to the bin by not polishing the software, drivers and hardware quality controls.

If you truly need this form factor, look around for possible alternatives (there aren't that many... maybe HP Envy 15 and Razer 15"?). In the meanwhile, try out the laptop, especially if it's the US version. If you need that laptop form factor, don't like the alternatives and if your specific device looks fine and works properly within the 2 weeks that you have to return it, you may keep it.
Not everyone has truly bad experience with these laptops. If you end up keeping it, though, I suggest you to buy extended premium warranty.
Don't be scared by the issues you're hearing about, BUT also take them into consideration when doing an informed buying decision.
If you don't even want the POSSIBILITY of having to fuss with tech support and hardware/software issues, then you may want to skip it.

Do not buy Dell's XPS lineup. I bought the 9500, and the problems it comes with are countless. For starters, I by no means use it for gaming, but I occasionally play League of Legends, and I am still having a hard time having consistent FPS. There are stutters, and it even dips into the 30s-40s fps. The trackpad is terrible. I had to put a ton of Kapton tape on the battery in order to have it pushed against the trackpad so that there wouldn't be any rattling. Next, the thermal issues are horrific. I've taken the laptop out of my backpack twice burning hot to the point that it felt like I left it on the stove. It seems like it doesn't go to sleep, so the fans keep on running and pushing hot air into the backpack, which causes it to burn. Luckily, there has not been any damages to the hardware. The battery is the worse. After 10 mins of use, I would have been in the 80-ish%, leaving me with only 2-3 hours of use. All of this happened AFTER my return window, which is why I have no other choice but to keep this one. I have to admit that Dell has made a wonderful job at designing the "perfect laptop." I love the 16:10 aspect ration, the large size trackpad, the keyboard, the speakers, the premium feel, but it sucks to see that I cannot enjoy these wonderful design with the flaws that it comes with. With all of this being said, I will not buy any Dell laptops in the future. I will stretch this one out until its last breath, and from there on will probably opt for the MacBook Pro. (I have one from 2015, and it has been amazing and still working as of today. Fast and smooth)

@@poonz313 Thank you for responding. The dell xps line is expensive and is meant to be premium. So its terrible that it comes with so many issues. Im sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience with the laptop.

@@AlexiaAllen84 oh no, I'd suggest wait and see how it is. If you're lucky enough yours will be faultless. If not, dell's return policy is quite good so you can easily return it after receiving. I hope you dont have to though, because it is quite a beautiful laptop.
But yeah I know what you mean - for their most premium line to have so many issues out of the box is unacceptable.

    Awesome review.
Just purchased Dell XPS 15, i7 Cpu, 64GB Mem, 1TB SSD, 1650Ti should receive it 11/30...
    For 2nd M.2 Slot
I'm going to get Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB or 2TB M.2 NVMe PCIe...
    Or
    I also saw a Corsair MP400 4TB NVMe M2 SSD
    Finally,
I hope i can clone from 1st M.2 slot to 2nd M.2 slot, change bios to boot off 2nd M.2 slot after and system will come up on 2nd M.2 slot...
I was also thinking of disabling slot 1 M.2 in Bios so it's not disturbed & cannot be written to while using & booting off of 2nd M.2 slot
If anyone knows about cloning from M.2 in 1st slot to M.2 in second slot would appreciate input / feedback...
I'm going to use Acronis True Image to clone...
