No, the official definition of the term by Oxford Languages is not gender specific. Though I agree that polyamory fits better. Polygamy is often hierarchical and focuses on marriage, which yes historically meant a husband who had multiple wives in most cases. It is not defined that way, however. So to say that "demo kind", as described in this fanfic, is a species preferencing polygamy is not gender specific or particularly wrong. Again though, even with that in mind, I do agree that polyamory fits a little better.
