What makes this scene even better is that the birds are the only ones who don't argue with Dafoes character in the movie.
It was improvised. The birds showed up on "set" and the director told Dafoe to improvise something.
Shows the heart and soul of the character entirely.
Now that's some damn good improv.
Bring Me More Booze Did he seriously improv this scene
He did. Actual manager was feeding them, and being protected species...the crew couldn't actually remove the birds from the set, so DaFoe just talked them away on camera
to me... this scene just shows the humanity of bobby. always keeping order, always being the responsible manager.... but also a nurturer, always taking care of his guests... and always taking care of those who need it the most. Mainly, the children... eerr, birds. lol
bobby is a good man... a perfect example of the character structure of "perfect good." there's not a single, hateful, spiteful or angry spirt in his soul. I'd like to think that weeks after the climax of the movie, bobby was still checking in on hailey at least once a week to see if she was doing ok, and probably even spotted her a week or two on the rent. he really is a good man.
my theatre couldn’t stop laughing during this scene
I like to imagine the three birds have their own motel with a bird willem dafoe as their landlord
Frank Howley I think you just pitched the next Wes Anderson movie.
Out of everything, this is seriously the most realistic part of this movie. These cranes exist just to casually wander around getting in everyone's way, and they're stubborn as hell. Spend any amount of time in Florida (I've worked on construction sites for months at a time) and these things are everywhere. They're really chill, but like I said they're stubborn and you aren't allowed to touch them to hurry them along if they're in your way.
That one bird stretching his leg out in a casual act of defiance was so perfect! Like everyone else, I laughed so hard at this scene and had to look it up to confirm it was improved. Amazing.
I don’t know why but to me this scene is so wholesome and beautiful. It’s so great and really captures the innocence of the film🦩
WILLEM'S CHARACTER IS SO LIKEABLE MAN!!
I aspire to be like him
It might seem really weird, but this is the scene in the film that BROKE me. At first I was laughing at how absurd it was that he was talking to the birds like they were people, but then I realized something - the type of person who would talk to the birds like this must have such a gentle soul. And like another comment says, the birds are the only ones who don't give him a hard time. I just felt like this scene showed the core of this character - the compassion and empathy - and I just burst into tears. Great scene, amazing improvisation!
I love the crane on the right at the very end of the scene. He’s like, “Umm...Ok.”
The pull back to reveal the 3 birds (herons? cranes?) is such a subtle piece of genius in the framing. The film delivers plot points that are revealed through really smart setups and editing choices by Sean Baker. And Dafoe is absolutely wonderful in this film.
They're Sand Hill Cranes. They look similar to Great Blue Heron, which are also quite prevalent in Florida.
This movie portrays the experiences I had growing up in Florida so accurately, it's surreal.
I like how that one bird sticks his leg out
i loved this scene, it’s so simple but in a way it shows Bobby’s character idk
Wish the whole movie would've centered around this character. Still definitely worth the watch though, lol.
me too, he was my absolute favorite part
I think the same, I wanted to get to know more about Bobby, why does he care a lot about the motel, he was such a great worker and human.
His character is a great example of someone with a good heart and good intentions doing the wrong thing. He should've called child services on that mother a long, long time ago.
Daddy Dafoe become bird keeper
When I saw this at the cinema, laughed so hard.
I love the movie but this was my favourite scene!
This is Florida in a nutshell.
I love people who speaks to animals as if they understand
Bobby doesn’t get so much respect from the residents. They got no clue how much he sacrificed!
Looking forward to seeing this
Keith. I saw it yesterday . Such a strong and powerful movie. I loved the movie
Saw it, and thought THIS is the best indie film of the year.
I travel central Florida every day at my job I see sandhill cranes all the time everybody loves them birds
The look like mini-velociraptors. It must be so cool to see them close.
@@bebebebota11 I hate those damn things. They used to always step right out in front of me while I was flying down the sidewalk on a skateboard. I'd grind to a halt and nearly fall and break my wrists, and they would just slowly wander off like nothing just happened. I also saw one chasing a young woman across a parking lot once, but I think she was asking for it... it was actually pretty funny :)
Native Floridian: These freaking birds must know that they are protected. Because whenever they are crossing the street they take their precious time. Even if I honk my horn to try and speed up the process they just give me a look like "hit me and find out" lol
This movie will Get a Oscar
Nantha Kumar I wish it would but it very well could for best Supporting Actor as Willem Dafoe! However, Sam Rockwell is mine and most people's favorite to win that category with Dafoe at a very close 2nd!
my favorite part! fantastic movie!!
I went to Orlando on a business trip with my girlfriend.
We went to that hotel to grab a picture or two since we loved the movie so much.
A remarkable and entertaining scene and the fact that it was improvised is all the more astonishing. Must have been the time of year of the Sandhill Crane's normal breeding and dispersal pattern. I see them in my neighborhood here in Florida at certain times of the year and they act very tame showing no fear what so ever. 😀
The best scene from the movie 😂
This made me laugh so fucking hard I remember
That one crane that strikes a stance xD
my little sister found this scene so funny for no reason
The rest of 2017 looks hot for A24 - between this (which was awesome) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (cannot wait to see).
rhythmoriented Both are AWESOME but only one had room to make my top 10 and it was Florida Project
rhythmoriented A24 also did The Disaster Artist which is my 3rd favorite film of the year
Mega MovieZ thx for the comments. Good time also made into my top films for the year (and included in many critics end of year favorites).
Gotta love the risks they take. Only A24 would have distributed Enemy a few years ago. Like Killing of a Sacred Deer it was displeasing to mainstream audiences yet brilliant. Other companies balked at academy award (SFX) winning Ex Machina, but they had the vision to promote a film that catapulted Vikander to A-lister.
Completely improvised scene. It wasn't planned, or in the script. The birds were in the way and needed to be moved for the next scene they planned on shooting. Dafoe said he'd do it, and they filmed it.
Aw, maybe they just wanted his autograph. XD It sounds like he's gently scolding a bunch of rowdy college kids who passed out outside the bar, and need to go home!
"I am the way. I am the truth and the life. The only way to the Father is through me" (Joh 14:6 ).
They look like brolgas which are native to Queensland, Australia and are that state's bird emblem and Queensland as a whole looks a lot like Florida (where the film is set). I mean both of them are nicknamed The Sunshine State.
They are Sandhill Cranes and they are all over Central Florida. I grew up with them in my backyard.
I used to be an instructor pilot at Kissimmee Airport a few years back and every now and again they would wander on to the runway.........
sin daño sin aves
Dafoe was born and raised in Wisconsin
This was the only part of the movie that I liked. I did fall in love with Willem tho too.
what? This movie is amazing start to finish.
@@Breerox108 I am just now seeing your reply. Not amazing if you've actually lived that way when ur young. At age ten I started making entirely different choices than everyone around me and I retired at 53. That movie brought back really bad memories for me. Love da birds though.
i would like bobby’s hand in marriage
bird
where the hell are the black bars
some promotional content of films are shown in full screen
They’re called letterboxes. Some films are shot with different aspect ratios meant to fill the screen, but mainly ^^^ the comment above.
Willem Dafoe talks to the birds. Your argument is invalid.
Not that funny
Big fan of A24 and really wanted to like this film but I didn't. Those annoying spoiled kids never shut up and the storyline goes nowhere. It's a grotesque portrayal of America at its lowest. Don't waste your time or money!
It was a great movie. I agree fully!
The kids were the main characters, it was meant to portray real lower class life for people without lower class housing, kids in particular.
