I saw him for the 1st time as a teenager in Oct 1984 when he came as one of the musicians invited for a funeral ceremony of a late notable personality in my home town. He mounted his instruments and climbed the stage around 10pm and played till day break. As a teenager, I stayed throughout the night till around 6.30am when he finally drove off with his landover. With nostagic, I watched him driven off till I could no longer see the rear lights of his jeep. I cried like a baby when he left but no one to console me. I desperately desired to go with him without knowing the consequences of my desire. What about my education? Where would my parent trace me to? Dont mind my juvenile mind pls. That has been the extent of my love for this late ICON. The unbeatable musician of his time by my yardstick. I actually took the interest of liking the style of his musics from my late dad. His love for him too can be termed as obsession. The subsequent opportunity to see him was at Akure in 1989 during the Muslim festival. He was invited for the festival in one hotel along FUTA road. The story of the experience for that day will be relayed another time. Without being ashamed , he still remained my best musician till date. His music gives me goose pimples. At my lowest moment, his music is enough for me to brace up. If you are around me you must like his music by force. I derive pleasure unquantifiably listening to his musics. If I drive 10hours journey I would scarcely mix his musics with any other musicians. I had opportunity too to trace his street to No 6, karimu oyelade in Agege Lagos before June 12 political imbroglio in 1993 but wasn't bold enough to knock at his gate. It was highly regrettable I didn't do anyway. A mission of 1984 when I so much desired to go with him then would have been fulfilled. Nevertheless, his musics are doing the justice even now that he is no more.
Rest in peace my adopted dad and evergreen musician. I will live to remember you. Rest in peace my adorable and unintimidated musician. You did your best. You sang seamlessly, effortlessly and unrewarded for all, dead or alive, high and low personalities, politicians, chiefs and kings, natives and non natives etc but scarcely did we see anyone sang for you till date except Orimipe your son in America and Kunle the one singing in Nigeria and trying to uphold your music legacies. What a cruel and hypocritical world. God knows the best. Adieu Omolowo !!

I remember the first time I listened to ORLANDO BABA'S music, I was very young then, that was in 1969, my late brother has sent me on an errand from Abeokuta to Ado-Odo in Ogun state. The bus driver was continuously playing his music. The music was so captivating and inspiring. I almost missed by bus stop. I left Nigeria in 1994 and came with his music. During the first few years of my hard struggles trying to get a foothold and find my way, his music inspired me when things got pretty hard. I can go on and on. Our loss on earth as a result of his passing was heaven's great gain. REST ON BABA, I AM COMING ONE DAY.

Owoh Baba. I grew up listening to his music with so much humility. Grew up in the ghetto Akala street mushin and as a Delta boy. Through his music I got to learn more on how to conduct my Yoruba language perfectly without mimicking words. Right now on my bed in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada I couldn't stopped humming one of his live music. My late mum brought it more than 5 times. I came here to see I could see it but couldn't so I decided to listen to fee of his songs again. It was a great encouragement to my soul. We called the live Embassy. I wish I can get it 😭😭😭. Rest Papa, rest on my able teacher of law and life. I really do miss you 😔😭

Am in my late 40 and from Edo State and growing up in 80s in Benin City Edo State our parents would always play such old great tunes by these great men like Orlando Owoh, Jim Reslawson, some others from Cameroon and Ghana, Osita Osadebe, Ebenezer Obè, Victor Uwaifo and even one Alhaji i cant remember his full name now from kano Nigeria. All these songs were played on vinyl plates (its so sad that we the children distroyed them all).
We never understood what most of them were saying but we enjoyed the calmness and the vibe.
That was the erra when there was no difference in tribes, or religion. We grew up in a time when we all in the communities lived as one. I remember how we would be invited to dine with Muslim faithfuls during their festivals. And they would come to celebrate Easter and Christmas at our homes. Where no one judged you by your faith or tribe. Where it was not uncommon to see an hausa man play Osayomore Joseph songs even though he didn't understand jack what was said.
I look back at those days and compare it with right now Nigeria then i just shake my head. To those born in the late 90s or year 2000 they may not fully understand how relatively peaceful the country was. Just like i born in mid 70s might not really understand how great Nigeria was pre 1960 and early 70s.
I hope some day, some how, sometime Nigerians would embrace our past and carve a better future for us.
But to these old great musicians i say may they rest in peace. And they must be playing music in heaven with my late dad dancing to the tunes as he did while on earth

Dr Orlando Owoh is an outstanding legend in High Life in the likes of Rex Lawson of Kalabari, Sir Victor Nwaifor of Benin Kingdom, Sally Young of Urhobo land and The Oriental Brothers of Igbo land ,effectively used the Yoruba language to plant nostalgic messages and happiness in minds of the seriously downcast and for unstoppable entertainment making his music a real universal language. For those who understand Yoruba language, none of his music messages is meaningless but full of wisdom. I remain his fan for life. We miss you in physical contact but your music represents your melodious voice and personality for ever. Adieu Baba Keneri !

Have you ever thought of how many people profited & still profiting from singing and/or remixing his songs for free? A good example is Ayefele. Take your time & listen to Ayefele'e earliest tracks..

The only opportunity i had was as a teenager in the mid 90s. That time his fortune had dwindled and he was singing 'jumps' in Watchtower Inn, at Onipanu-Shomolu, Lagos..
I heard his voice over the speaker and had walked up to the entrance,it only remained for me to peep and (probably)see him.

I still remember my first encounter with the Canary as a teenager. Even though he was my in-law, I have not till then met him on a one-to-one. He must have been around 28-30 years of age then.
So this my cousin, another teenager on our way to their house suggested we enter a pub for a quick drink before heading home. On entering the pub, we met only three people; two men at a table and another man sitting alone at another table.
As we entered, I noticed the lone man at the table tipped his head downwards as if to hide his face but I didn’t think much of that. My friend bowed to the man and waved and I also nodded towards him and we sat down. The woman owner of the pub served us then turned to us and asked ‘Which music would you like? Is Orlando okay?’ Without thinking, I retorted ‘No, please give us Sunny Ade!’
My cousin’s jaw dropped and he shouted ‘That’s Orlando sitting there, you fool!’ I quickly stood up and turned to face the man sitting alone and greeted him again, but the guy simply nodded his head looked at me coyly with his head still bowed! I never forget that day.
About two years later, I was sick and admitted to the LUTH and Orlando’s mother came to visit me one afternoon. I quickly asked her to please say hello to Orlando for me (without mentioning the incident) even though I doubt if he would even recognise me again. I sure learnt a great lesson from the incident.
I was later to meet Orlando again in Jos about 8 years later at a private gig. I doubt he could remember the incident or connect me with it but then I was a bit tipsy on the night and all he could notice was that I was with his junior brother (we grew up together) throughout the night and sometimes backstage with him and his band boys. Then one of the band members asked if I am a journalist. Before I could reply, Orlando turned to look at me and his junior brother asked him, ‘Don’t you know him, (pointing at me) he’s the son of so and so’ And he replied ‘I know’.
A few years later, I was to become an ardent lover of Orlando’s music to the extent that those who know me began to wonder if I’ve been possessed with the music of the master canary. I just couldn’t get enough.
Towards the latter end of his days, we met again and I was trying to persuade him to allow some American jazz artists turn some of his mellow lyrics into jazz. Unfortunately, this did not materialise until he passed on.

Hmmm...Life! I have always known from the profundity of his songs that he might be a a very quiet person who would like to stay quiet or be alone most times. He did not sound like someone that would like to be all over the place. He sounded reserved and deep! RIP Baba!

Sometimes it is hard for the human mind to quickly grasp inspired things, we gravitate more towards flitting things especially when we are young; but as we grow older, the things that were inspired begin to resonate with us. This is what happened to you, KSA though inspired, was only so sometimes, Orlando was inspired all the time, that's why you meet him in bars almost all the time. I'm sure he understood why you chose KSA at that period in your life, but the wise old man also knew you would eventually come to see things from his own point of view. Same thing happened to me, I'm now so obsessed with Orlando Owoh I can't stop playing his songs, but can't listen to KSA for a second anymore.

May GOD ALMIGHTY continues to bless whosoever upload this song. It brings back flood of memories. It happens to be one of my father's favorite. I cried as I was dancing to it. When we were going to my father's chieftaincy title, this song was played throughout. Sir Orlando, may your soul rest in perfect peace. You are irreplaceable.

I never saw him but I grew up in to his music. Ran to the radio wherever Ogun Radio's Mid-day melody featured Chief Orlando Owoh's music. Someone claimed Orlando Owoh is in the leagues of Don Williams and Kenny Rogers. No. I beg to be different, and with huge respects to Don Williams and Kenny Rogers, Chief Orlando Owoh is beyond Elvis Presley. He was a philosopher. His music is therapeutic. A mirror for Africans to look at ourselves. He left us with his great music. Great music. I am a fan you never met chief, and I do appreciate the work you did. Bye bye Chief Orlando Owoh.
