I started planting a two acre native woodland here in 2010ish, three or four years ago I decided to put in some daffodils for some springtime colour. I put in just over a thousand, took a while.
Anyway, not one has flowered. I tell a lie, this spring I spotted one. One out of a thousand, time well spent that wasn't.

When we built our green house we put copper tubing all around the outside it keeps the slugs away ... last was the first year we didn't have slugs eating everything.

I agree with another comment, a poly tunnel would be great, maybe we ( your viewers)could help you purchase one, they are not expensive on Amazon. We have had one for years, great way to grow crops.

Loved watching as usual. Dog/ house sitting my son’s place so parents can take the younger grands on a mini two day trip since they are on a short break from school.

Have you ever given raised beds consideration for garden space? The landscape there appears to be a bit difficult to navigate for a garden. Raised beds can produce so much bounty. I have been an avid gardener for 40+ years . Good luck, Katie and Scott. The garden will be great no matter what you choose. P.s. Creeping Thyme is VERY difficult to grow from seed. The conditions must be just right!❤
Just a suggestion: Considering how much rain you get, it might be prudent to dig a shallow ditch at the top of the garden perpendicular to the slope of the hill. That will help prevent rain draining down the slope and carrying your soil and amendments away.

Hello from the south of the South Island ,New Zealand ,where I am very much in tune with what you are doing on your island.
How about raised bed patches. In Norway we used two layers of logs one on top of the other to make the frame work put a bit of soil etc in to start with and work from there.
Adding chicken shi@, dried rotted seaweed etc to build up the beds further.
Its easy to fit posts to the logs to enclose your beds with wire fence etc.

Yes your fence needs to be at least 2m high and make your top line in very visible white twine or electric fence tape. That way the Deer know they can not clear it. Also lesson learnt from Norge.

When Scott turns around before walking off and says ''Katie thinks I'm, an idiot'' and proceeds to walk off, I was thinking last time he did that he fell in the bog. ha ha. You two have a lovely sense of humour and thank you for taking us for the walk enjoyed it very much. Loved the cottage and Scott and you reminiscing on the lady living there in her lounge having tea and staring out of the window.
Cardboard is a good weed barrier. The metal fence posts come with spikes on the bottom and they're easier to drive into the ground. A couple of rolls of chicken wire fencing should be enough to start.

I used to use lots of newspaper and grass clippings on my garden the grass clipping were about 1 foot deep , never had weeds and the soil was dark and rich.The veggies grew amazing.

So in love with the islands bio diversity loved seeing you plant the bog myrtle and reintroduce them to the island. Suspect they may be elsewhere on the isle but love how u both want to preserve and protect. Can’t wait to see the trail cameras set up again I’ve become fascinated with the bear marten they will love the orchard and the vege garden.yikes.

Cardboard is very effective in preventing weeds and in encouraging worms.
Lasagna composting! Layer the cardboard, then compost, then soil .
Hi, the cardboard method is how I started the beds on my allotment many years ago, it suppressed weeds and grass long enough and killed them off by blocking the light. It's going to be a challenge defending against the deer population. At least all I need is netting to keep off butterflies in summer. You could try throwing wellies at the deer, you seem to have a few to spare !!

The we Glen leading down to the loc would be a great place to launch and recover a boat with a simple windless and endless rope pully anchored to the rock off shore just above the low tide mark for ease of maintenance

I have to agree with you, there is something so wonderous about when the first shoots begin to show themselves. AND you encouraged/started that life and hopefully over the next few months, years, even decades with the right rotation of soil and plants, we can come back to video 57 and know where it all started! 'Patience' is such a hard word when waiting for what is needed. All one wants to do is get going. Question: Are you both 'Human' First Aid trained? Just in case?

I am right along with you, setting up my veg patch exactly as you have done here. I found emptying the wheel barrow sideways (basically rolling it over on its side and letting the compost tumble out that way) is a lot easier on the body, and is a little more accurate in placement.
We recently moved from a built up city to the countryside, to what we consider a little remote. I will never complain about having to drive an hour and a half to pick up something for my garden. Thank you for giving me this perspective.

I told my son that I am not that tall and the veggie cage need not be that tall, but he reminded me that the runner beans can go quite tall. Now he plans to make mine 2mt high. And he brought me a massive bag of chicken manure, scooped half of it in a drum and filled it with water for liquid fertilizer. I think that bag will last me till the day I die 😂😂

Hi from sunny Nairn. Great show again I use a hand saw to cut the cardboard for the allotment it’s a lot easier for me. Use the cardboard for paths with wood chips on top. Regarding the fence for your beds you could harvest some of the trees for posts just dig them in with a post spade. All the best

I thought poly tunnel but as you are very exposed the wind would have it down I bought one last year spent 100 pounds on a poly tunnel from garden center we had stormy weather and it ripped my large poly tunnel apart and I lived in a built up area any way love your vlogs x

Hi Katie, here in OZ, we have to keep kangooroos out of our veggie patch. I was thinking with all the rocks you have, you could do the same thing you are doing with rock edge going up, and Moe like raised beds. Like a lasagna raised bed. Then you can use AG pipe in a half hoop form along your raised bed and cover them with chicken wire or netting. Tall fencing all along is a lot of work and costly. But it is great to have too I just thought to throw out an idea in case you found it helpful. Good luck with however you go. It's a battle with nature that's for sure ;)

@@TheScottishIsle raised beds are a lot easier on the back too ;)
And you can build and expand as needed too. I'm a big fan of them because of a bad back. We call the metal post Y post here. They come in many lengths. It's a big job to do a fence but it's great once done. My thought was with your stony island, tte fencing may be very hard to do. So "fenced" raised bed may work well. But you'd know best in your situation.
My only concern of the new vegetable patch is in the foreground there is a trench. It looks like a gully that takes the water away. It may be ok and you don’t have any water drainage problems. 3m high for your deer fence plus extra in the ground. It might be a good idea to check if you can get the posts far enough in the ground to make it a good job. The last thing you want is a breach in the fence and ruin your crop.
With the new veggie patch being, for now, cardboard with rotted-down chicken poo on it, won't heavy rain just wash away the poo mix? I was wondering if a temporary edge barrier of branches or rocks may help, if my concern is valid. Or, if a barrier is needed, those wellies could be pressed into service, forming a wellie barrier. I like the image I've created for this. xx

Would harvesting cedar for posts from that big tree that fell in the storms be an option to make your own fence posts for the garden? They would make nice rot resistant posts, and cedar splits well.
Definitely an option and great idea, if we can drive fence posts far enough into the ground...what with all the bedrock! Kx
@@TheScottishIsle I have wondered if the bedrock would get in the way. Perhaps that is why stone walls are so common in the region, easier to build upward than to drill holes down into the bedrock.
@@permiebird937 I'm wondering if I'm better with some cloche tunnels, now. So long as they keep the deer away...
@@TheScottishIsle I think some sort of greenhouse or poly tunnel is going to be needed to have success with warm season crops like tomatoes and peppers in the long term. Cloche tunnels would be easier to set up for this year, as planting season nears, but they probably need a bit of deer protection to avoid getting trampled. Another fencing technique would be to build a "dead hedge" of branches, logs and brush, weaving all the dead wood together as a deer barrier. It looks like dead branches are an abundant and free resource on the island.
I'd like to recommend a gardening channel in Ireland called "Red Gardens" the reason is he does a lot of variety and technique trials and keeps very good records and compares trials year to year. He has big poly tunnels and different demonstration gardens, like no dig, intensive, and simple, which is for high production of only 4 or 5 crops. He is big on soil testing and adding amendments, which I take more of a soil health before buying in amendments view. I find the information he generates with all his trials and demonstrations gives me good insight and inspiration for projects in my own garden in Western Oregon US.
