Tamron is developing a full-frame 200-800 f/5.6 and an APS-C 18-500 f/3.5-5.6!! Both look promising but unsure about when they’re going to be launched!
Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie! Good to see you not forgetting your roots, us Kiwis are proud of our Aussie neighbors.(really) Good realistic review, not something I would Stick on my Z7II when have 100-400 & options of internal crop & 1,4 TC but thanks for taking time to test & review.
I very much like my F mount Sigma 60-600 paired with my Z9. But I definitely wouldn’t hand hold it for very long. I usually use a monopod with a gimbal head.
Hello matt, thank you very much for the test of the objective 👍🏻This was a very good help with my purchase decision. I would like to use your camera strap and the Arca Swiss mount for the lens. Can you tell me which products / manufacturers these are? Best regards, Marc
One other interesting thing about it is it's easier to push-pull than to twist the zoom ring. They way they "geared" it (the angle of the slot that dives the barrel forward and backwards) is very aggressive which makes pushing and pulling easier that twisting in my opinion. Even when fully extended I feel zero play in the barrel.
I have to say Matt that lens is quite a bit heavier especially being handheld I can tell it's not a lens you want to travel with all day long!! It is available for f-mount Nikon available through Amazon I say today...!!!
I've taken about 10K images with this lens across a Z6 II, D850, and D5. It's sharper than you'd expect for a lens like this. It loses a lot of color and contrast as you approach 600mm. I've spent a good bit of time in OS mode 1 and 2 and the one thing that this lens does is sometimes produce a hazy image where it appears like there's no focal plane anywhere. So not front or back focused, just nothing is in focus anywhere. I haven't seen any other lens do this. Outdoors with lots of light the loss of color and contrast can mostly be fixed in editing, but indoors in low light punching up color and contrast just doesn't work that well. But for $1000 used it's hard to beat. I shot this lens along side my 200-400 F4 for sports which I know is a weird combo since they cover the same zoom range, but basically I'd use the 200-400 as much as possible and switch to the sigma when I needed wider or longer. I feel like the best in slot replacement for it is the 180-400 but at ~7500 used it's ~7-8 times the price. It can have a harder time focusing when the action is coming straight at you.
Got this for the L mount when it came out. I've been MASSIVELY impressed with image quality compared to other big zoom range lenses. It is indeed heavy.
Yes. Heavier and the image quality a smidge better on the newer 60-600mm. Both are fine chunks of glass but wouldn’t necessarily change unless you will use the extra room at the wide end.
Thank you for this video Matt, it broaden my understanding. Can you do more photography for wildlife and fast motorsports? Would you please do a video explaining apertures and focal length? Can you please give the focal length and aperture data of your still shots on the bottom of the still photographs in the video? It will be helpful in our understanding. Thank you 🙏 Love your sense of humour "Mel bird" 😅
I like my 50-500, unfortunately that is the last generation available for PENTAX K mount. Very good lens for airshows, various battle reenactments or ZOO visits.
60-600 is only 380g heavier than Sony's 200-600 which doesn't seem much. Tried both out at the store. Sigma front heavy zoomed out makes it feel much heavier handling.
The pictures done at 60 mm are just not very interesting as it shows no separation to the background. A 150-600 is better. Combined with a 70-200 2.8 .
Is it just me, or does the AF capture seem a bit off at times (moreso than I've seen in reviews of other recent sigma lenses). It looks impressive nonetheless and honestly the price I'm seeing on Amazon does not seem unreasonable at all given what that lens can do.
like you I’m a nikon shooter so it will not work for me. I do use the 200-500 f/5.6 so I’m not sure if it will be too heavy to use. I’m hoping for the mythical 200-600 nikon lens to descend from the heavens.
First to comment! I have had mine Sigma since it first came out for my DSLR. It's still my primary, only sports lens! How can I use this new one for my Z9 without an adapter?
Great and helpful review as always, Matt! I guess the birds shot earlier on were pond heron and night heron if I'm not wrong and not kingfishers.

It’s my main lens for my D800. I got mine with the 1.4 teleconverter too, it takes great shots for what I do.
Different lens. Enjoy 👍🏼
Once you use 2x adapter, it's perfect. Could not find for emount tho for now.

Hi Marc, I am currently using QD system from PMG.

Only in L mount or Sony E mount? I have the Canon EF version.
Kingfisher? Attenborough called, he said stick with the bus driving.
Great video Matt. Always super informative.

I picked up this lens as an open box "like new" for 1499. I don't think I would have paid the full 1999 but for 500 off I jumped on it
Congrats

Good review .many thanks. It may catch some more birds feeding at victory park along the harbor front .

Have you compared the image quality of the Sigma 60-600 with the Sigma 150-600 for L mount? Do you think it's worth a change to the 60-600?

Thank you Matt. How many fps stills does the Sony a7r5 give in manual shutter compressed raw with this lens.
no idea sorry - i don't have either on hand to test either.

BTW Matt, those are not Kingfishers, they are Black Crowned Night Herons, or as cool birders call them, BKNH.

Finally a lens I can use my monopod for. That poor thing just collects dust.
Mel is a beautiful model...

You can't
@@mattgranger Aaah, shame; I can't wait for them to come out with a native version for the Nikon Z series!
I don't like the Sony autofocus. It's lied to and oversold. Canon R5 is best followed by Z9
oversold?
2.5 kilos 🙄... hey Matt you could use something like Benro MSDPL46C SupaDupa Carbon Fiber Monopod with Leveling Pan Head... can helps a lot.
Not a Sony user, so no help to me.
Also comes in L mount
