On the technique days for guard, I divide them into groups. I had three last time, and it got whittled down to two because I saw how quickly some of my performers were progressing, and the rest of the team became inspired and started working harder and achieving more. My guard kids work very hard but they do talk a lot so i come down on them for that often. I also make sure they're practicing or paying attention to my bandapp posts by having respond to ultra specific things like "where is your flag on count 2?"

How would I find a mentor? I have a group of great band staff. But I'm the only one who knows anything about guard. If I reach out to close schools I'm kinda nervous they will look down on us and judge.

I think most directors are happy to help. The worst they can say is no. No need to feel any shame for trying to get help for the benefit of the students, right? Another place you can try is in the various guard director FB groups. Simply reaching out and asking for someone to mentor you might give you a lot more options!

@@flashesofashley it's amazing to know you started at 19. I'm 21 and I've felt a little discouraged bc I'm so young/ inexperienced. But knowing where you came from and how you are now is truly inspiring
