While what you said is mostly right and I agree to it - there is another dimension to happiness and that is the environment you live in. Things have improved - but if you look at the condition of most of our civic infrastructure, there is a lot to be desired for. A normal working professional - struggling with erratic power supply, buying water from tankers, unstable working conditions (especially in private naukris), terrible city roads, constant traffic jams, increasing school fees - is summarily frustrated and unhappy! I think problem in India is - at national levels things are improving very well. But at local and municipal levels, things are still where it was decades ago or even worse. This may sound very basic - away from larger issues of politics, spirituality, national security, stable economy - but are 'moolbhoot' needs of people at large. Unless quality of life improves - fresh breathable air, parks for children to play (not those cramped dusty areas with 2-3 jhulas put in), potable water, reliable power supply, roads that you can drive in safely (not fearful of breaking your bones from potholes), clear drains, public space free of garbage stink - basic basic civic facilities (moolbhoot suvidhayen) - fundamental right to decent quality of life - our score on happiness will never improve. With increasing population and forever continuing civic work - these basic facilities are very limited which is increasing the frustration level of large population. Frustrated people will never score into higher happiness index.

I think maybe a few contributing factors could be: competition, corruption, pollution, overpopulation/high population density, stress, no free universal health care, people sometimes feel they aren't getting value out of their taxes, etc.
