How to use Tracing Paper

In this art tutorial I am going to show you how to use tracing paper to transfer a sketch to a different art surface. You can use this technique to transfer sketches to watercolor paper, card-stock, canvas, wood panels, pretty much any surface you want to use to create your final piece!

Thanks for the vid I guess, I finally found out how to use this tracing paper that I bought about a year ago. I still don't understand using this product versus carbon paper . I'm pretty new to the art world and could use any help I could get but out of all the ways to trace this seems to be the worst. I'll try you're way and see how it goes , thanks for the help. I am going to attempt to trace the Eye of the Tiger ,,,,,, wish me and LSU good luck !!!!!!!

To put the pic on my canvas can I finish it with colored pencils
Can you transfer them by drawing over say like a printed sheet from a computer and retrace them onto a blank sheet?

Tracing over any kind of picture or even one's own drawing can help in improving drawing skills.
I really hope I get a reply to my question... I was lead to believe that once you had you drawing on the T paper you then had to turn it over and scribble pencil on the back of the T paper in order to get a better print out ? When u go over your subject? ????
I have never tried that, I usually just go over the lines a few times when I am transferring the image. There is no harm in trying that method out.

Yup! I don't use a particular brand. As long as the paper is see through then you can use it.

Oh it's like a carbon paper too. What if I want to transfer a mirror image without having to use a printer? Like I have sketch and I want to transfer a mirror image unto the back of paper I'm planning to cut.
I actually have a second video about more ways to transfer sketches! There may be another method that could help you.

Is it the same as baking paper?
Unfortunately no. I wouldn't trust using baking paper because it isn't formulated to be used with art. I did just release a new video with several more sketch transfer methods, if you are looking for an alternative to tracing paper.

Quick question. So if you find a picture on google that you like, print it out and then use the tracing paper to trace it over. Is that where you just put it on a canvas to make it easier? I’m confused! I hope this made sense
Hello there! While some artists do that, I do not. I only trace and transfer sketches or drawings that I have created with the purpose of eventually turning that sketch/drawing into a painting. I hope this clarifies things! Thank you for watching!

My tracing paper has a dull side and a shiny side. Does it matter which side I use?

Can we use traching paper for body panting
Probably? I know tattoo artist use a type tracing paper to transfer tattoo designs. So maybe something like that would work better?
Yes you can. Ask any tattoo artist what they use exactly and how they do it. A friend of mine is a tattoo artist, and I have seen his process from transfer to skin. I know at first they print their image out, using a light box to trace that image onto transfer paper. Then they turn what they drew down onto the skin. This is for the initial line work. But not before they wipe the skin surface with something. I am thinking simple isopropyl rubbing alcohol.
See, the entire process I wish I could explain away. So you'd either have to look it up in research, or ask a tattoo artist what they do. Because I do know there's also a certain type of transfer paper they use as well.

But then the image is flipped??
No, if you place the marked pencil side down on your surface your image should be in the correct orientation. Essentially you are flipping the image once and then flipping it back to it's original position. Hope this helps!

Its easy to trace it straight from the laptop screen rather than drawing three times 😫

Did you already get a visit from the Art Police, telling you that tracing is bad? If they do, send them away with the remark that there are already enough rules, and we don't need nor want rules in art.
just like with drugs just say NO!
Or how about those rules that art should be done like this or that. Textbook art rules really pisses me off. Besides, she's tracing her own design! Art is in the eyes of the beholder, I always say. It's what you create! I've never conformed or followed their textbook rules. Never will.
