That book should be called "Writing a book about Billy the Kid, without knowing anything about Billy the Kid"😂

Reader: "This is new to me! Where did you find this information?"
Melody Groves: "Trust me bro." (probably)

Hmm, winner of the org's big award is the President of the org. Move along. Nothing to see here. 😮
Well, I didn't have this book on my list and I'm thinking it will remain absent from same. Thank you, James, for saving me the money. Sorry you had to spend yours in order to find out how bad this one is. You should get combat pay to compensate for the frustration incurred!

This is extremely troubling. To present speculative content as historical fact, and then accept an award from an organization where the author holds a leadership position, severely undermines the credibility of the organization, the publications she’s been associated with, and the publisher. It’s a blatant disregard for the standards of historical accuracy and a disservice to those who are genuinely passionate about preserving the true history of Billy the Kid. This kind of behavior discredits the entire field and is an insult to those who seek the truth. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this garbage.

Ugh, I can’t wait to read mine 😐
Just for the heck of it, not that I’m defending this monstrosity in any way, I’m sure it’s coincidental, but I’m almost positive that Jerry Weddle claims that Josephs middle name was Bonney in his book, “Antrim is My Stepfathers Name.” It’s been a long time since I read it, but that stuck in my mind.

I'd like to look into that. Read this book, and give me your feedback.

Mills has a ton of valuable information. Especially about day to day stuff.

Oh dear. Should have taken the info and made a novel. Sometimes you have to speculate but even so, speculation should at least be based on some foundation of facts...and should be flagged as speculation. I love Silver Threads and a friend of mine arranged and performed a rendition of it. A beautiful composition.

Author Melody Groves is a recipient of a (2023) Western Writers of America Spur Award for her book about Billy the Kid (Jon Austria/Journal) Unbelievable.

Author Melody Groves is also the President of the Western Writers of America... Whether an issue or causation or correlation, you'd think there'd be a conflict of interest rule there.

Can we completely discount that Marty McFly aka Clint Eastwood, used doc browns Time Machine to confirm her findings? I know it’s a bit cloudy if she knew Marty.

I think her potential sources for Billy being younger than 21 would be discussed in Michael Anthony Giudicissi's (now Mankind Media) video titled "Billy the Kid was not 21 years old" but that's just a guess. I just re-watched the video - it's Frank Coe and Paco Anaya as potential sources.

These writers' guilds exist to promote their members, so the apparent nepotism is sour, but tolerable. However, the fan fic being passed off as history is laughable. The cherry on top is the comment on Mills, as it illustrates the simple world view with which this person approaches the subject matter. No shame.
