In the fall, instead of all that soil, you can layer straw or hay bales in the bottom. It will decompose over winter and create a great substrate.

    • @maryannrondinella5680
      @maryannrondinella5680 4 роки тому +28

Just be sure the hay or straw wasn't treated with a long-lasting weed killer. I was going to use horse manure and old hay, but David the Good, who used to live in FL, advised that the University of FL has developed a persistent weed killer that passes right through horses, into their manure, and it will still inhibit plant growth. So make sure you know how that hay or straw was grown.

With my raised beds, I put two layers of cardboard underneath, and a layer of chicken wire (for the gophers 😬). I filled most of the beds with homemade compost so I didn’t have to buy as much soil. I actually made mine w treated wood, and smaller, as I don’t have such a huge space. I made my compost pile w the same idea in mind years ago. Thank you for sharing! 👍🏼

    • @Metqa

Hey, that's a smart idea to use these bricks for compost bin! If make a two compartment style, then could easily remove the center short crossbar to turn it over to the other side. I hate the idea of hot compost bed because they have to be so big to get a good temp inside and turning it is such a chore . But with a modular set up like this, seems access would be so much easier.

I have them cut all of the boards in half and buy extra blocks for the 8' section to minimize warping over time. I also use rebar to stabilize the blocks. Be careful pounding in the rebar though. The blocks can crack easily if you miss the rebar. Also place sticks, twigs, leaves, aged straw, free wood chips and some raw veges in the bottom to minimize the amount of soil you use initially. Some people even use the dirt from the "paths" between the raised garden as fill. Great video!

Really great idea! About the only thing I might do differently is I wouldn't put the landscape cloth under it. The reason why is I would want to encourage earthworms to come up into the soil from the ground to add to the fertility of the soil.
Also, for those who can't transport even the 8 foot boards, why not buy four more of those bricks and have Home Depot/Lowe's cut all your boards into 4 ft lengths? That way you can transport the boards. Maybe even double it up to make it twice as high for an even deeper bed.

One of the best gardening tips ever! I wish I knew about this when I started gardening. This is seriously one of the best ways to garden using a raised bed. How would you protect the wood during the winter months? It can get pretty cold in PA during the winter. I don't want to have to break the bed down if I don't have to plus if we get another mild winter I was hoping I could just keep the raised bed down and plant greens like kale, spinach and collards.

A suggestion...to kill the grass and weeds, spread a tarp or dark plastic or cardboard cover over the grass where you plan to build the raised bed. Leave for about 2 weeks, remove the covering and there will be nothing growing under it. Build the raised bed and dump the garden soil and you are good to go. Preferably remove the plastic unless it is food grade to prevent leaching of poisonous leachates. Cardboard should be ok, but make some holes for drainage. Also, you might be able to find a local supplier of garden soil with compost, who can deliver the growing mesium., instead of lugging it. All the best!

Found these at HD because an employee there told me about them when HD first got them. Wish each block was 10-12 inches tall. I use them, they work and it makes "building" raised beds easier. Fun video!😊

This was the best video I saw this season. Putting in my gardens in Florida, had one for years when I lived in N.C., and even with my in-ground bed of 14×90, I just wanted/needed more. I am limited on sunny sites, and ended up with some very odd slivers left available that just didnt seem feasible to till and plant. I shared this with my hubs, and he ended up building me one 4×4, that gets full afternoon sun, for all my herbs. Also, he built a 4×32 plot in full sun, which I will install double cattle panels lengthwise, and plant both sides with my heirloom tomatoes. That's 42 tomato plants! I'm in heaven! He wanted to make it easier for me, since we are older, and I have some arthritis in my back, so he did a 3 block/board height and filled it with 9 cubic yards of composted Black Cow manure. These beds are going to be loved for years, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

😃Thank you so much for making this video!!! I have been wanting to make a raised bed garden in my backyard for so long but had been spooked by cost of materials and workmanship. Thank you for graciously taking the time with your family to walk us through the process in detail. I'm totally inspired!! 🌻

The only suggestion I would make would be to forget the landscape cloth and to use cardboard instead. It still acts as a weed barrier in that it kills the weeds, but it doesn’t prevent the soil biology from moving into your beds like landscape cloth does. The worms that are drawn to the cardboard will break that down and the castings they leave behind fertilize your garden as well as the tunnels they make allow oxygen and water to get to the roots. Soil, after a while compacts, the worms help to prevent this. All this add up to a healthier environment for growing in. Hope this helps.

So we were at Lowe's today and was going to go with 2"×6"×8' boards and I'm making a 32'L ×4'W which would be 4 separate beds using the planter blocks. But after watching your video I think we are going to use the 2"×12"×8' boards and one planter block to get us started. I have a greenhouse that is 36'L×18'W×10'H so I have wooden panels I have my flowers on now. I want to make the raised beds to go from opening of left side to the back and come up to other side opening making a U shaped bed in the GH. Since they are only 4'wide I can still keep two rows of my wooden panels and have plenty of room to move around...thanks for the video I can finally show my husband what I am talking about Happy Gardening from Wild Rose Acres.

Beautifully done! I loved hearing the details on your soil
and the amount it takes to fill it. Now you are actually, walking with us on that. Please Grow Family let us see you plant seeds (work it out) in your gardens well. We'd love to work with you, and you are being so informative. We need that step by step show and tell. So in the future could you set us up. Thank you so much as I have been enjoying your show. You might even join with the other gardeners as a network to be very detail. Thanks again, Brother for all you do!

Thank you for thoroughly teaching and demonstrating how to purchase and build this raised garden bed without tools. I set out to build a 16 x 4 bed around vegetables I had already planted. I was able to do it by myself. I was so excited I went back to HD the same day and purchased more materials to DOUBLE the size of the raised bed to 32 feet and I added more plants. My husband was quite pleased to see what I did while he was away at work. The next project will be to build the hoops to keep out the rabbits! Thanks so much! God bless you and your family.

This is a great idea! Love the look and a good depth for a raised bed at twelve or twenty-four inches (if you double stack everything). Thanks for sharing! I wish I had a portable mill to make my own boards and a cast to make cheap concrete blocks. This would be REALLY cheap if you could trim down a bit on the supplies from the hardware and garden stores.
