I was a user of Dip tobacco for 17 years and have been cold turkey for 6 days. I don't feel the actual physical addiction anymore but the mental battle with habits you speak of are still there. After a big dinner waiting for my reward...the last 2 hours of my shift. seems that my favorite times to dip are still having me riffling through my pockets for a can that isn't there.
What I love about AoM is that, since the founders are very Catholic-minded, they're not afraid of, and strongly encourage, speaking on porn addictions as "yeah, guys are addicted, it's B-A-D, and we are confident that we can fix it". Many manly blessings to AoM!
Art of Manliness makes some weird choices for background music. I noticed a few other comments about music besides this one. This background music sounds like I'm watching a promo for a kids' summer camp or something.
+Adam Robitaille I don't know about you, but for me it's relaxing and, in a weird way, it makes me more focused on the video. Maybe that is the point of it. Or maybe Brett just has a more unique taste in music. XD
The help and tips Brett puts out there for every man is something every man should know and be aware of. It is also, in my opinion, something every woman should know as well. Brett should be a proud person, as he serves as an example to us all, with the great advice and better mustache.
You're full of it. There is nothing that wrestling a bear can't cure. But seriously, love your videos, your articles, and everything you do. Every video has helped me in some way. Keep it up!
I'm not a man, but I watch some of your videos anyway because they just make so much sense to me! Like the thing you talked about where you experiment with what works to satisfy the craving for the bad habit - it just clicked in my brain! Thank you :)
I quit smoking cigarettes nearly two years ago, so hard but one of the best decisions I've ever made, and I still want one sometimes. I don't know how, but they still smell SO DAMN GOOD to me.
It's more or less the same experience for former drug users. For example, people who are clean from smoking heroin may have done so because one reason was they liked the taste of it. You probably still like the smell and taste of tobacco sub-consciously and also considering the fact that nicotine is what makes cigarettes addictive.
Garrett Thompson My father quit smoking cigarettes more than 20 years ago. Even nowadays, he sometimes dreams of smoking a cigarette. Power of habit is strong, specially when the habit messes with your brain. Stay strong ! Salute from France (sorry for my bad english)
Garrett Thompson I quit drinking and smoking a few years ago. The thing that helped me most was thinking of the bastards that approve this shit. They obviously care more about money than people so I decide to care for myself. This may not be good enough for some people but it works great for me. One quick look around this world and it’s easy to see that THEY aren’t on your side and THEY couldn’t give a damn about you. Well, they’re not getting any of my money or ruining my life. I am better than that. Good luck.
Interesting. There is also an other way which is pretty similar but involves more 'choice' and less 'habit'. I'm not saying it's a better way but it's an other possibility. When you feel or experience the 'cue', in stead of changing the bad routine for another 'better' routine, you can also change it for a moment of 'stillness' (or some kind of short meditative moment). In this moment, taking enough time to do 'nothing' and getting aware of yourself and of the moment you're in, you can than make a choice what to do in the following moment or time. It involves a little more consciousness and a little less routine. I work a lot at home and I have on chair I can only sit in to do nothing at all (no music, no reading, ... just staring out of the window). I'm gonna sit in it right now! Thanks for the interesting vids!
I've been following the site and getting the newsletter for some time;it's great that you have videos now, and this one is particularly good. Congratulations; keep the good work!
This talk deserved better than the elevator-music backing track. When a web page has a horrible wallpaper, I have tools to rid myself of the visual plague. With audio, it's not so easy.
I've started making a conscious effort to be able to do things with both hands (where I would normally only be good at it with one). Anything liketurning taps on, or using the opposite hand to hold/open a drink bottle etc. Dunno if it serves any real purpose other than just being interesting and a bit satisfying once you get good at it. 10/10 would recommend By no way am I exempt from habitual behaviours (which should go without saying), I just find it impressive how difficult it can be to break or form a habit.
I must say moustaches will always look physically manlier than beards. They give the jaw an angle whereas a beard can actually rounden and soften a face shape if you're not careful
Informational and professional, yet inspiring as well. I loved it! Your channel is a great source of inspiration and you're a true role model that this generation need more than ever!
You have a great channel ! I don't know why your videos just came up in my YoutTube searches recently. I subscribed after just watching a couple of your videos. They are very helpful for so many common issues that we face. Keep up the good work !!
If it's a bad habbit for you : The Cue is a lake of manliness The Routine is watching these videos The reward is getting more manly Getting balls can work as a new routine for the same cue/reward
On topic, I recommend for reading Dr Kitson's book: "How to use your mind", it's free for download at Gutenberg's Project (no copyright). This book has an interesting approach on habit in learning.
great video. you should sit further away from the telepromter though. i can see your eyes reading it so it takes away a little of the feeling that the host knows all the stuff he's saying.
I like the shot of you stalking the Diet Dew. My paternal ancestor used to stalk Diet Seven-UP. When I would hunt down cans of the stuff, I would always regret it because the taste was not a reward. Yech.
Very useful video. I already knew the article on the site and this is a very good video version of it. Personally, i didn't like the music too much, i found it a bit too cheesy but that's got nothing to do with the valuable information presented.
Just weighting in on a few comments we all have bad habits and the power of change is in all of us if not to please ourselves but make our love ones happy And i see more and more men acting less like a man today
There's more than one way to skin a cat I guess. My flossing habit formation was nothing like what you described from that book, but I like what you're doing. Generally very supportive!
Bret, Thank you very much. I have been battling ADD since I was young. For me, choosing to be unmedicated for it is part of being a man. I feel like your video will help me to further culture proactive habits. Thanks.
Good on you, man. Medication is just a quick fix that in the long run will do more damage. I feel sorry for all the kids who get diagnosed with ADD these days and are instantly put on medication.
Thanks you. Yeah research is showing that medication therapy without behavior modification is much less effective in the long run. I have found that exercise and mindful meditation are very helpful for me.
***** Exercise helps for my form of ADD. May also start on fish oil again. Have you identified your type of ADD? Seems there are 12 types. I think I'm this one but may get brain scan to verify: www.additudemag.com/slideshow/61/slide-4.html
Guys, I'm dieting. But every Friday night I decide its my "cheat day". So I eat a breakfast of about 450 calories. Wait for the entire day and then at night, I buy a bunch of junk food and eat it ALL. The amount of calories can range from 1200 to 3000 at that time. 1. Is that a bad habit? 2. What am I actually craving? Is it really junk food? I'm pretty sure its junk food. 3. What could I do to eliminate this habit? Edit: Forgot to add, the snacking session is ALWAYS accompanied by some video or movie. Maybe what I really want is something to enjoy snacking on while watching a movie. But I don't know a way around this, carrot won't do the trick.
+Smoothbluehero I have some personal experience with weightloss. It's definitely a hard habit to break but not even close to the hardest. I would having a cheat day every month not every week. But occasionally having a cheat day won't hurt your progress unless it's big enough to the point where you take in more calories than you burn.
It could be an addiction. A habit whose reward causes a chemical dependence in the brain will make you do more and more of the routine, but it will harder for you to get the reward. If there isn't a chemical dependence, it is simply a common habit, and will be much easier to change.
I especially thought the idea of writing down a "resolution of action" in response to a cue was a good one. Beyond that, the actual fact that this is a methodical, serious approach is interesting. But what if you don't know how to get serious about changing a habit or haven't been particularly methodical about anything with your personal self? How do you find that moment or spark that makes you serious about it? Great video, thank you. S.T.
Thank you for this, I will finally be able to stop my soda habit after following thus video. Also thank you for the Web site it has helped me out me out about through life
I think the point was that if you're not happy with what you're doing (i.e, you play games all weekend, but at the back of your mind you feel bad because you're really procrastinating on something), then you can use these tips to get out of that habit. If you play games all weekend and are happy with that, then by all means, indulge yourself.
Can I suggest a little tweak regarding the mountain due example, I would say this is more of an addiction, rather than habit. To which addictions are largely due to boredom. Will link studies if requested. :)

Do you have a more in depth article about this topic Brett??
Did you read the book he recommended?
Why is there nothing written?
New video is up. It's on changing habits. Please share!
That's a mustache that even Tom Selleck would be proud of.
Agreed, that's what I said that Tom Selleck would be proud of it, not that it was better. lol.
lol! Your manliness is secure!
Art of Manliness My habit is watching youtube instead of doing work. i need help lol. How do i break it????

I completely agree with you. It's something that isn't brought up enough! So many men have fallen into this terrible habit.

Thanks Brett. You're doing a brilliant service for the few of us aspiring to become Men.
Thanks for the video. Helped me out a LOT.
badr selfaoui Glad it helped!
got given this book for christmas. About a third of the way through, it truly is fascinating!
We had a few spelling mistakes in the title cards, so we fixed them. Sorry about that. We'll make sure it doesn't happen again.
Very well said. Thank you Art of Manliness for showing me a genius way to break my habit. I need to find someone to hold me accountable.

Phase cancellation. Easy principle, difficult to implement.
I enjoyed this one, Brett! That "habit-hacking" sounds like a very versatile attack method.

A habit whose reward causes a chemical dependence in the brain will make you do more and more of the routine, but it will harder for you to get the reward.

Nice video Brett. What camera do you use? The quality is superb.
how about a video of how to stop chewing and picking nails. and how to properly care for nails.
I literally was chewing my nails when I came across this comment.......Challenge accepted.
You can actually read about nail biting habits in The Power of Habit
Proper nail grooming is a pretty good idea for a video.

In my opinion the so called "addictions" are just habits that do not benefit you .
What about when you have the cue, the routine and the reward, but with time you don't fell the reward anymore, more still keeps doing the same time.
Have any explanation about that?
Instead of Diet Mountain Dew I'd grab a beer.
Sir, i salute you
