Backpacking in Shawnee National Forest: Lusk Creek Wilderness

- Mark, Joe (Tentlife Productions), and I all managed to sneak away from work for some much needed R&R in the Lusk Creek Wilderness of the Shawnee National Forest. We worked hard to plan this one out (not really, aside from requesting off work it was entirely last minute planning) and if it weren't for a recommendation from a friend of Joe's, we might not have discovered this spot. For the sake of keeping it preserved, we all agreed it was best to not disclose the exact location of our camp even though it can be found online if you know where to look. If you do know where this is, or find its location online, do the world a favor and bring a few trash bags to clean up the area. We'll be doing the same the next time we visit.
I live near the Shawnee National Forest and have hammock camped at some awesome places here..
I highly recommend Panther Den for a camp out and some jaw dropping scenes to camp in and near
I've been to Panther Den a few times, it is one of my favorite spots!! So cool to climb around in the rock bluff formations, some of those spots you could walk right past and not even know they are there!

Wow, thanks for the kind words! Means a lot. We love going to the shawnee. I live in Chicago, probably the most opposite from the shawnee as it can get. Us "city folk" get a bad rap, but I'll tell you I do not take places like the shawnee for granted. I only get a few chances a year to see it, all the more reason to appreciate and preserve it. My Go! Outfitters tarp has served me well through the 4 seasons of Minnesota including a couple of winter storms of 8+ inches of snow. Good video. Looks like a great place to hang

Looked like a relaxing time out for sure! Good PSA regarding LNT. Some of the more popular locations unfortunately gather far too much 'leftovers' & reliant on others to pickup it up. Hope to kayak that creek some day, but not after a heavy rain - that thing can be hazardous then. ;)
It's definitely becoming an issue down there. Every time i whip out the camera around there i get a slight twinge of guilt knowing I'm probably making it easier for people to find those spots, which can only mean more partiers and more trash. So i felt it needed to be said. And yeah, we were actually standing down on the shore and Joe pointed out that the debris line from the water was about 6 feet above our heads lol. I imagine the creek was pretty dry compared to when it gets flowing full force!

To be honest, i don't even have exact directions. I was being guided to this spot by someone else. All the trails going out to this are very overgrown and not marked at all. But, it's called rock house in the lusk creek wilderness. You should be able to find info on it with a Google search. Also if you're planning a shawnee trip, check out this link. Lastly I'd just ask that you make sure you leave no trace, that's becoming really important to me the more people ask about my trips.

Just curious about the rules of having fires in the caves, here in its prohibited to preserve the structure because heat is not good for the rock and could cause collapses.
I'm not sure if that's a rule there in the Shawnee. I've spent a fair amount of time reading the regulations on the forest service website to make sure we're not doing anything we're not supposed to. Haven't seen anything on there about that, outside of the standard rules. I do know there are certain ecological areas which you can't even camp in, let alone light a fire, but we weren't in one of those spots. However, that cave was also very large and open, and seems like that fire ring has been there a long time.
We find them all the time here in Kentucky people having illegal camp sites and fire pit. It has gotten so bad the its about to ruin it for the rest of us.as far as dispirited camping in the Red River Gorge, it will be by reservation only in legal spots that the Forest service picks out.
@@jasonmorrow216 yeah the shawnee is getting more popular every year, especially with the pandemic. Thankfully most of the wilderness areas seem to be pretty secluded still, it's the main tourist attractions that get all the attention, which are already heavily regulated for good reason. We definitely practice LNT when we go out and always look for existing fire rings if we're going to have a fire.
