Great video, I got my brother SNES PI case and loved it. He snapped the SD card because because it didn't have a paper warning him to remove it... This new NES for the pi 4 looks great and usb boot will be a wonderful upgrade. For $40 with a power plug seems fair, but I would prefer to save a few bucks with no power adapter.
There is a guy on Etsy that sells 3D printed SSD carts in both grey and gold, and you can have labels put on them, ie a Legend of Zelda label on a gold cart.
If you unscrew the case on the old Crucial SSD you will see that the black ring arround it is removable. You will need the proper sized screws though since the ones in use are a bit too long, but once it is done it will be 7mm rather than 9mm
I had this one, and its great, but still the best rpi4 case imho is the Argon One case. They even just released a revised edition with M.2 supportand two full sized hdmi.
Hay you need to use thermal paste it helps a lot I got a 7° improvement on my raspberry pi with the ice tower cooler also you should get Twister OS it comes with retropie pre installed along with themes and many many other neat programs
It looks like you plugged the USB extenders into the wrong ports. It appeared you plugged both front ports into the USB 3 and the SSD into the USB 2. You should get much better performance from the SSD if you put it on the USB 3. Edit: I see you fixed the cables in the following shot.
I'd use the cartridges for different retro pi builds. One cart for NES, one cart for SNES one for Sega and so on and so forth and have the original style controllers for each system.
To make one correction in your video, it is NOT Mini DisplayPort for the video-out. It is actually micro HDMI. Otherwise, you have a very informative video. I can’t wait to receive my micro HDMI cable so I can “get my retro on”!
Not too expensive and produces a nice little machine. I was never a Nintendo fan so I'm not the target market. I know that injection molding is very expensive so I'm amazed they went to the expense but what I'd really like is this treatment being done to an Amiga case, something like an Amiga 500.
@@stokeseta7107 Now I've got to admit that I'm old but it used to be that the cost of IM tooling was really expensive and the break even run was about 100K units. Not to mention the electronics manufacture that has to be incorporated into the product. I suspect that a vintage Nintendo case for the RPi is a niche product that will have relatively limited appeal. I don't see them selling millions of these especially since the ROMS are of 'questionable' provenance. But hell, good luck to them.
I prefer the Argon ONE cases (they released one with a M2 SATA SSD support) as a living-room friendly case, but you showed the NESPi case is as good (if better, with the SSD case) as the Argon ONE.
I have the NESPI for the R-PI3 and I thought that was brilliant. I have been looking at getting the NESPI for the R-PI4 and this has just prompted me to order one on Amazon which will be delivered tomorrow.
the nespi has some issues. there is a lot of interference from the exposed usb3 wires used in the case. it can mess up wifi and bluetooth connections. i managed to control it with aluminum tape. there is very little air flow from outside the case. with this the unit runs hotter then other cases i have used. there is also no fan control. i build one and added inline so the fan wouldnt run all of the time. also the shutdown script has an error in it. it is set to reboot instead of shutdown. if you wanting additional cartridges, etsy has some 3d printed cases.
There's also the DeskPi Pro. That one is not yet released, but it does a few things over the case you call out here, most importantly IMAO it converts the miniHDMI ports to full sized ones. It also comes with a GPIO extension and an IR reciever, and IMO far superior look (nothing against you but for me that grey plastic is just ugly, I actually prefer the acrylic. That console was before my time so I don't have nostalgia). Like the case you mention it has a good CPU cooler (looks actually even better), a PSU, an on-off button and of course an SSD mount with adapter. All that for a quite simular price. Might want to check it out when it finally gets out.
I have the earlier variant of this case, its great also has a spot for the fan, however its purely visual still having the ports directed to the front, but every else not much, and under the cartridge flap you have USB ports
I'm torn; They added the ssd/m.2 support I suggested/requested (in a much cooler way also) but didn't make a daughter board to change the garbage mini hdmi ports into full size.
It's a nice case. I got one the cartridges hard to take out. And I'm trying to work out a way to have access to that USB port that is blocked. Other than that it's a great case.
Love my 8-bitdo SNES20pro controller, Wish it had the colored famicom buttons, but the overall classic and surprisingly good feel of the controller makes me just not care in the end. It's just a good controller overall.
I was noticing that the network extender is not twisted pair, so I don't think it will be cat5e or cat6 compliant. Probably not an issue, but something to note.
You are, there's the bottom 2.0 but there's a huge hunk of plastic and electronics where the power and RJ45 ports have been migrated to the back that get in the way. I can't see how much room there is but you won't get much in there
Ooh I noticed you are drinking Rise canned coffee in this one before I even checked the description. It's some good stuff for canned coffee like that. Kind of pricey around me though so I'll stick with my drip machine most the time, I need to get a new espresso machine at some point though as that's how I normally like my coffee.
How do I get the Arcade Punks images to boot? I’ve updated to the latest firmware (2020-12-11), set the boot order to USB enabled USB boot & put my SSD into the case.
IDK if there is a way to use a M.2 SSD on Raspberry Pi, but I feel there is kinda a missed opportunity to use a cartridge locking system to hold a M.2 SSD down like the original NES did the cartridge.
Be warned, this case, due to some kind of shielding issue with the USB 3 internally, WILL block your 2.4 wifi as well as your bluetooth controller signal. I went from full signal wifi to none when using this case. My 8bitDo can only get about 6 feet from the case before it starts malfunctioning. This is a known issue and there are a couple of work-arounds, but nothing solid. You can supposedly plug the USB3-Sata into a USB2 port and it might help. Otherwise, you can use foil tapes to shield the USB daughter boards and wires yourself. That's what I'm about to try tomorrow. This interference issue and the hotter temps are sad strikes against this otherwise amazing case for a retro game system. Disappointing.
I have one. I like it. BUT; the sata to usb connector is crap- and you either have to run retroflag a ‘firmware update’ (or it’s already loaded since I complained) or do the workaround yourself. Long story short, in your config.txt there is a usb.quirks line that disables ADP because the connector is china crap- it’s still fast, but not as fast as with a decent connector!! Verify it, and I told retroflag and they just made a ‘firmware update’ and haven’t disclosed to customers. Suck. But it’s still cool.
For me, this case was a complete nightmare. Not only the horrible shielding issues of the SSD adapter, it also started to malfunction after a few days, now it makes the bluetooth chip and the other usb ports to stop working completely when plugged in.
Are there air vents in this anywhere? I was unable to quickly see any. Also, I like the new Argon One case that has a SATA M.2 but I just wish that it was a SATA like this case.
I love the general layout of this, and even though I'm not a gamer, I'd buy it just for the full accessibility to the SSD and micro-SD card. I use my 4B for a lot of testing and R&D and I'm constantly changing OS's and whatnot. It's currently installed in a Geekworm X-825-C6 metal case and USB/SATA hat kit. The case really knocks the crap out of my wi-fi signal and bluetooth as well, so moving to this wouldn't really rectify that problem (from what I've seen in the comments), but with some creative shielding work, it might actually be a solution!😉
I hope they do sell cartridges seperate allong with a set of blank label stickers so you can print out your own cart labels for them! 4:42 Could you have taken apart the 9mm thick Crucial SSD and installed the bare PCB inside the NES cart?
the nintendo like look so cool , i recently buy a game emulator that look exactly like that 15euro , with 600games look so nice on my desk mini nintendo :P
You forgot to say that if it doesn't boot that you might need to blow into the ssd cartridge to get it going again.
Retroflag and 8Bitdo, heroes of retro-gaming. ETA prime is also a big fan. I personally own several 8bitdo products and love all of them.
8BITDO IS THE WAY TO GO BABY
And I have one on the way.... Thanks for the info!!!
I had bought one of these for a friend. He loved it.
Great video, I got my brother SNES PI case and loved it. He snapped the SD card because because it didn't have a paper warning him to remove it...

So far the Argon One case is my choice case for my Raspberry Pi 4. But that one is pretty quirky too, entertaining video thank you :)
Hay you need to use thermal paste it helps a lot I got a 7° improvement on my raspberry pi with the ice tower cooler also you should get Twister OS it comes with retropie pre installed along with themes and many many other neat programs
I bought a black steel case from Amazon. It's pretty nice and blends in with my other black electronics.
It looks like you plugged the USB extenders into the wrong ports. It appeared you plugged both front ports into the USB 3 and the SSD into the USB 2. You should get much better performance from the SSD if you put it on the USB 3.
Edit: I see you fixed the cables in the following shot.
Nice case review! Floatplane eh? I might just have to finally subscribe there...
says Mini DP ports @1:43 ... looks like they are Mini HDMI
Yes....yes they are.... 🤬
*Micro :P
That on/off switch - you didnt notice that until you got all the screws in and it didnt boot, right XD
What a gotcha lol
I'd use the cartridges for different retro pi builds. One cart for NES, one cart for SNES one for Sega and so on and so forth and have the original style controllers for each system.
Man nice case for a Pi. I agree with you have the USB facing the same direction.
"I want that" said me. Fr, thatcase looks really cool!
That's frikin nice case, man, wow, I'd love to check it out, keep up the great work.
To make one correction in your video, it is NOT Mini DisplayPort for the video-out. It is actually micro HDMI.
Otherwise, you have a very informative video. I can’t wait to receive my micro HDMI cable so I can “get my retro on”!
Snagged one as well...it's delightful, they did a great job on it!

Since when is injection molding expensive, when you mass produce stuff?

You might take a look at the argon 40 m.2 case, that’s the one I’m gonna get

My guess regarding that USB ports arrangement is you can always plug it in to the next one if you had the wrong direction, nice design.
That's a pretty awesome case. I mean, it's probably going to be on my purchase list soon.
This is an amazing case with a look before my time
I came for the beer and only got a retro-pi
That's so fcknin cool!

Super cool but I think my only complaint would be the dual micro HDMI. With that case I don't feel there would be intention to ever use it.
Thanks managed to find it on taobao for just 30 USD... Now just have to go through a complex ordering process with consolidation
I was noticing that the network extender is not twisted pair, so I don't think it will be cat5e or cat6 compliant. Probably not an issue, but something to note.
Nice review. Am I correct that one USB port was left unused?
You are, there's the bottom 2.0 but there's a huge hunk of plastic and electronics where the power and RJ45 ports have been migrated to the back that get in the way.
I can't see how much room there is but you won't get much in there
Love that case looks super rad
Yes please
Thanks for sharing.
I love this case!!
I have the older model for the 3B+ but this is so much better.
Did you make any temp test with overclock?
Would love to see that.
If you have a M.2 ssd then Argon One M.2 would be my choice but this is definitely a nice case.

I wish they made something like this for the MiSTer/De-10 nano.
Its great but mine come from the shoo without sdd cartridgs and one screw.
god YES it is the best case ever
How do I get the Arcade Punks images to boot? I’ve updated to the latest firmware (2020-12-11), set the boot order to USB enabled USB boot & put my SSD into the case.
Could you install a thicker SSD / HDD without the case? Thinking of those shucked Seagate 4/5TB drives for a sweet Kodi box.
IDK if there is a way to use a M.2 SSD on Raspberry Pi, but I feel there is kinda a missed opportunity to use a cartridge locking system to hold a M.2 SSD down like the original NES did the cartridge.

Did you ever do those foil shields? Did they work?
great case but no matter what I try to get the safe shut off script working the power button just flashes and doesnt turn of f8(
Unless I missed this somewhere in your video, but with the *TWO* USB ports on the front, aren't you LOSING the other TWO that are already on the Pi?
Could u please review a 19" rack cases for pi?
It's great for whom have 19" rack shelf and want to assemble a pi cluster
Hey Jeff, can you make a tutorial for creating a VM or maybe a Pi, Squid Proxy server?
thanks man! you rock
No analog triggers, because the Switch doesn't have them either, and that is primarily a Switch controller.
How's the cooling on it? I heard that with the SSD, it blocks airflow
Haven you taken a look at the Turing Pi?

Elecom Huge trackball!!
Deft ftw
Can the fan be controlled? I find it loud and obnoxious
Is there enough air venting in the case?
For me, this case was a complete nightmare. Not only the horrible shielding issues of the SSD adapter, it also started to malfunction after a few days, now it makes the bluetooth chip and the other usb ports to stop working completely when plugged in.
nes cardridges are beeing pushed in and then pressed down. So its not the excat feeling just almost 😁
Gulikit and 8bitdo are the same company?
This is dope!!!!!
I'm a bit confused in only one point: why not a laptop hdd to storage the games? It is cheaper and for reteo games I guess will be ok. Right?
Are there air vents in this anywhere? I was unable to quickly see any. Also, I like the new Argon One case that has a SATA M.2 but I just wish that it was a SATA like this case.
The top grill is a vent, with the Pi heatsink directly below it. It ran plenty cool, even when OC'd to 2.0GHz/700MHz.
What about the CM module? Can this be made to fit with that?
see a fan but i don't see any vent holes for that case. how's the thermals on this case?
The top of the case is vented.
Can the last USB port fit a wireless keyboard dongle?
the pcb blocks the unused port on the pi.

doesnt ship to my country :(
why not diag the fan screws????????
The last two screws are from the bottom of the case.
I wish they would sell extra cartridges. The case is legit though. Its my bare bones workshop daily driver.
Could you not have just removed the case for the SSD and placed it into the NES case?
Yes, but what's the fun in that???
@@CraftComputing I ment remove the shroud from the larger SSD and then place that into the NES cartridge, either way awesome build
Terios T3 controller (Bluetooth rechargeable)

Pocket Ants anyone?
Nice but too expensive
Watch to the end, I compare pricing for another case with an SSD mount and power adapter.
There are lots of reports of Bluetooth/wifi issues when an SSD is installed. Would love for you to investigate if you have these problems
i shielded the exposed usb3 wires with aluminum tape.
@@kensmith4137 were you having issues prior to that and if so did it solve those issues? Appreciate the response.
