Welling up listening to this Mr.Weller lol..remembering my Son .miss him so much ...killed 9 years ago ..moped accident. Thankyou Paul. Its a beautiful Song. Well done.👏👏 Thankyou ..from Bristol UK 🇬🇧 😉👍
Amazing rendition of the classic Lightfoot song. Great vocal strength from Paul Weller, superb clarity. This sounds so good have played it at least 50 times Superb job, real professional, am sure GL would give the thumbs up
Indeed, since the Jam for me. My high school years were the 80's. I fell in love with The Style Council especially. The man is just as amazing live. I have been fortunate to see him 2x.
Nov 1978 Newcastle city hall was the first time I saw him live. I’d already seen the Angelic upstarts and the Clash, but The Jam and weller were miles ahead of them.
I was 15 when I bought In The City. My parents both heavily into music they took me to a record show nearby, 1989, i was already into that sort of scene but didnt know much about the Jam. It blew me away. I lived in a small town, the lone Mod. Paul Wellers music was a great thing to grow up with. And continue with throughout Style Council and Solo. Along with my parents' music collection, which included among a bunch of other stuff - gordon lightfoot, well rounded i think. For perspective, my mum ised ti see Lightfoot perform in The Village in Toronto, when he was starting out. Hippies didnt exist yet it was a folk and blues and bohemian scene. I mention this because she saw lightfopt live several times. When she heard Paul Wellers version, she said "that is well done". And thats as capital a compliment you can give really. And tha knk you for your comment. Sprry for the lengthy reply. I talk a lot. Take care.
@@Mr00dear Gordon Lightfoot wrote the song in 1964. Ian and Sylvia were the first to release it, in 1965. Peter, Paul, and Mary also released a version in 1965. Lightfoot himself released it in 1966 in his debut album, Lightfoot!
i could take or leave Jam in their day , although there was no doubting their popularity ... and i came on here in a slightly sceptical frame of mind to listen to his version of this great song .... well i have to admit that this is not a bad version at all , he's done it justice, and i love the music arrangements too ... hats off to you Paul Weller!
when I 'served my time'..starting from school in 1980 ? ...my gaffer (John Geraghty of Five Star Dry Cleaners on County Road, Liverpool).. ...lent me two Lightfoot LP's. I still have them. He still asks me for them back whenever I see him. :-) ..to be clear. We were engravers then. I don't do dry cleaning :-) I saw Cradock and Weller do this in New York. Just like this. In Virgin on Times Square. ...yes. Amazing x 3 of the best gigs, in a week, anybody ever did...and I ever did see x xx one love xx
Superb reading of a Lighttfoot epic..just another brilliant cover this man has chosen to create over a 40 plus year career. The Modfather..The Governor.
I met weller ,I followed him from Leeds Town n Country club 1993,it jus happened my car was outside near the tour bus.we followed the bus not knowing were it was going, laughing weeks jus about to turn round wen it turned into a hotel jus round the corner..we jumped out to meet Paul, wow what a Geezer just me n my mate Dave...he asked what we think of the new music,n if we like having a second guitarist etc..n have we heard of him.No we said, hes from OCS..we didn't know of them back then...what a Gig of the life craddock has ,lucky bastard...
Brilliant , found this coming through my head phones wile stuck in a Spanish airport at 4am after a heavy weekend in Benidorm With the lads and all I wanted was home the lyrics were perfect I just couldn't stop replying it !
I heard Gordie play this but, paul's version I got hooked on right away and the chords suit my voice better, love it. Will play this at my next gig!!!!
Agree that PPM did a good version of this, but my all-time favorite is Ian and Sylvias off "Early Morning Rain" - the harmony is top-notch. That said, this is also very good. I will also admit that there may be a bit of "Grew up with that one" at play (vis Ian and Sylvia) . Eva Cassidy also did an awesome rendition of this one...
Today Gordon passed….I always look to Paul’s versions of Early Morning Rain…. He does it the justice it deserves….
Always heartfelt Majesty 🤎🗝️🙏🏼
never enough credit to the man steve cradock who is a true legend and a amazing musician, whom Paul has had by his side for many a year.
