Going middle more or less 'shrinks' the court yes because they angle they are able to hit aren't as tight, but the trade off is now they can hit the ball to either side.
What you said in the video at 1:06 is completely NOT accurate. How do you explain top PB players like Federico Stakruds or Ben Johns always get up to the kitchen 100% of the time after returning serve? I happened to watch Federico vs. Quang Duong in Bristol and Virginia Beach in person, and Federico gets to the kitchen after returning the serve 100% of the time. Federico doubled pickle Quang at the PPA tour in Bristol.
You may of misunderstood. The goal is always to move forward to the kitchen. BUT there are certain instances when you can get caught in your back foot and you shouldn’t advance. Because you really can’t afford to get caught in transition like you can in doubles. So if you hit a return of your back foot and can’t make it all the way to the kitchen line you may want to stay back and chose a better ball to move forward on (when you’re hitting the return moving forward)

Not everyone is Federico stakstrud and can make it to the kitchen line. This is why you should try to contact the back AS you are moving forward.
