I think you might also enjoy this thrilling adventure with the crocodiles on the black river safari tour. ua-cam.com/video/wZtgzfplvPU/v-deo.htmlsub_confirmation=1 Check it out
Turn is a very Humble Guy, I’m from Black River, that’s where I was born and bread. Allen’s Pharmacy is Turn’s Mom’s pharmacy as well. Where JAG Smith’s Park is was just unused land that often grew up in bushes while I was growing up. Where the Safari Boat Ride building is and the Restaurant that they stopped a couple minutes earlier (Bennett’s Restaurant) was all unused buildings for over 30 years from the late 1960s to the Mid to late 1990s when the boat ride starts. I remember a large ship use to come with rice from abroad, the some Boats 20 to 30 feet long by about 8 to 10 feet wide used to be pulled by a Tug to unload the Ship. There were probably about 20 to 30 large boats and it would take two to three weeks to unload the ship. The ship was so large that it had to stop about one mile off shore. There is a stake in the Sea, one mile off shore, that’s where the ship use to stop. The stake can be seen from the land if one knows where to look, the stake is just about two or three feet above the sea level. I guess the Stake was there from Logwood Trade days or maybe even from Slavery days.
There are also some unused Cranes along the sides of the River, we used to Jump off the Cranes and the unused wharf buildings into the River, as part of the fun while we were swimming in the River. There were not much Crocodiles then, jumping off the bridge into the River was a daily routine. I would do back flips from the very top of the bridge👌🏾.
Wow. Thanks for the learning my friend
I've passed through a few times and was impressed by the ambiance and tranquility. Thought I'd love living there.

18:52 Salute and RIP to those 133 ancestors who obviously preferred to die trying to be free rather than passively submit to enslavement. You did not die in vain 🙌🏽🙏🏾🧜🏾

Agreed. This channel does a great job of covering important Jamaicans culture and history, and it is appreciated.
Just some added information: the Leyden brothers that you mentioned owned all the property land in my district Lottery/ Amity Hall in St James. Most of the poor locals worked on the property famous for bananas… later on ,the white man who took over those lands was Mcfarlane. He then planted acres of Chinese Guineps known as Liche.
Such an informative video, I learn so much about Black River. I did not know it had so much history. Thanks again for a great video Mr Gayle😊
Blessings Val.

Wow never knew there was a medical school in Black River….so much as Jamaicans we don’t know about our country….thank you
Is true Mel
At 33.54 on your left hand side you
You described the shipwreck but what great building was erected there with red bricked gated walls leading into it?
Black River, 1754 Moravian missionaries arrived in Jamaica. They were the first missionaries to the island. They were recieved in St. Elizabeth by the Foster and Barham families, who invited them to their property for the onversion of their slaves.
Black river is noted to be the first place in the western hemisphere to have received electricity in the year 1892 then New York some years after .can't find the supporting information. Can anyone find this article ?
I have, been, to that place my mother is from st,Elizabeth identified some years ago f or my uncle passing
👍
My roots black River
That was just remnants of a fishing boat Infront of Waterloo
Very educated
🙏
My grandfather is from st Elizabeth guthri
Cool
Cleve lewis was mp for many yrs in that parish. Was there anything left of his work for the area ?
Who?
BLESSINGS to ALL GOD Wonderful people, especially wesselly and TEAMWORKERS, take care the roads are SOOOOO bad.😃🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😍👍
Nuh true
Not just the roads…all the shared public spaces. The town looks like it had the potential to be very charming in appearance, instead of so unkept and dilapidated. There is a school of thought that believes that having and seeing surroundings that are clean, maintained, and beautified where possible, has a positive impact on how persons feel and behave, so it would be an investment in the entire community.
Have mercy laaawd can’t the mayor or councillor do some more to clean up the area especially the monument off those slaves
🤔
Why are the historical buildings so poorly maintained?
🤔
Italy Switzerland
👍
That flag is the flag of Denmark
oh, thank you.
Many first for Jamaica the Caribbean and the Western Hemisphere
Yes sah
Wesley you ought to let people talk, rather than interupting. I think Mr Turn had pleanty to say but you kept interjecting so he lost the thread and was unable to complete his sentences. We love your voice but you need to develope your listening skills.
Thanks. Noted Sharon
the first shall be the last and the last first Black River is so stagnated it is the slowest town in Jamaica
Lots more to be done
Hmmm😁, slowest Town in Jamaica, not sure about that, at least not now. The stagnation took place in the 1980s and 1990s. However, about 10 years ago, it was on the news that Black River was one of the fastest growing Town in Jamaica. There are several developments just outside the Town, namely up by Luana with about 200 new houses being built in the last 10 years or so. The Prime Minister just announce another phase of lots to be put up for sale up by Louna, there is also a medical school by the old Innvocal Hotel (AAIMS). 95% of the Medical students are from India, you could see up to 60 students in the Town some nights, eating out or going for walks before the pandemic hit. Some of the students is on the video above, before the pandemic the student were numbered in the hundreds and growing. It’s an American run medical school and the students are hoping to go and work in the states to earn big bucks after there graduation.
The newly arrived Chinese had taken over all but two of the supermarkets in the Town and they seems to be doing well. When I was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s it was the same with the Chinese but those were Jamaican Chinese who were in the Island from Slavery time. They left in the late 1970s when a lot of middle class people leave Jamaica, because they taught the country was going communist, anyone old enough to remember those days. Hence Black River is currently moving in the right direction again❤️.
