    Turn is a very Humble Guy, I’m from Black River, that’s where I was born and bread. Allen’s Pharmacy is Turn’s Mom’s pharmacy as well. Where JAG Smith’s Park is was just unused land that often grew up in bushes while I was growing up. Where the Safari Boat Ride building is and the Restaurant that they stopped a couple minutes earlier (Bennett’s Restaurant) was all unused buildings for over 30 years from the late 1960s to the Mid to late 1990s when the boat ride starts. I remember a large ship use to come with rice from abroad, the some Boats 20 to 30 feet long by about 8 to 10 feet wide used to be pulled by a Tug to unload the Ship. There were probably about 20 to 30 large boats and it would take two to three weeks to unload the ship. The ship was so large that it had to stop about one mile off shore. There is a stake in the Sea, one mile off shore, that’s where the ship use to stop. The stake can be seen from the land if one knows where to look, the stake is just about two or three feet above the sea level. I guess the Stake was there from Logwood Trade days or maybe even from Slavery days.
    There are also some unused Cranes along the sides of the River, we used to Jump off the Cranes and the unused wharf buildings into the River, as part of the fun while we were swimming in the River. There were not much Crocodiles then, jumping off the bridge into the River was a daily routine. I would do back flips from the very top of the bridge👌🏾.

      Just some added information: the Leyden brothers that you mentioned owned all the property land in my district Lottery/ Amity Hall in St James. Most of the poor locals worked on the property famous for bananas… later on ,the white man who took over those lands was Mcfarlane. He then planted acres of Chinese Guineps known as Liche.

    Black River, 1754 Moravian missionaries arrived in Jamaica. They were the first missionaries to the island. They were recieved in St. Elizabeth by the Foster and Barham families, who invited them to their property for the onversion of their slaves.

      Not just the roads…all the shared public spaces. The town looks like it had the potential to be very charming in appearance, instead of so unkept and dilapidated. There is a school of thought that believes that having and seeing surroundings that are clean, maintained, and beautified where possible, has a positive impact on how persons feel and behave, so it would be an investment in the entire community.

    • @georgeedwards2141
      @georgeedwards2141 Рік тому +1

      Hmmm😁, slowest Town in Jamaica, not sure about that, at least not now. The stagnation took place in the 1980s and 1990s. However, about 10 years ago, it was on the news that Black River was one of the fastest growing Town in Jamaica. There are several developments just outside the Town, namely up by Luana with about 200 new houses being built in the last 10 years or so. The Prime Minister just announce another phase of lots to be put up for sale up by Louna, there is also a medical school by the old Innvocal Hotel (AAIMS). 95% of the Medical students are from India, you could see up to 60 students in the Town some nights, eating out or going for walks before the pandemic hit. Some of the students is on the video above, before the pandemic the student were numbered in the hundreds and growing. It’s an American run medical school and the students are hoping to go and work in the states to earn big bucks after there graduation.
      The newly arrived Chinese had taken over all but two of the supermarkets in the Town and they seems to be doing well. When I was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s it was the same with the Chinese but those were Jamaican Chinese who were in the Island from Slavery time. They left in the late 1970s when a lot of middle class people leave Jamaica, because they taught the country was going communist, anyone old enough to remember those days. Hence Black River is currently moving in the right direction again❤️.
