The Many Metra Holiday Trains of 2023
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 жов 2024
- This year, Chicago’s commuter railroad Metra brought back their holiday train! But instead of running on just one line, they were available on multiple lines. What’s more, for people who were not able to get tickets for the special excursion trains, Metra also ran their festively decorated trains on regular service. We went to go see several of them, including a ride on the electric district.

Note also that the grade crossing alarm was repeatedly playing the first seven notes of Jingle Bells.
How sweet of metra to provide a little bit of Christmas year round
Good one!😄
Thanks for showing this. Made me remember the trolley buses being decorated in our community ( much too small for commuter railroad ) for many years.
I lived in NYC for many years and I never saw trains decorated like these. Then again, NY has many jerks would delight in vandalizing anything like this. Thank you for a further glimpse into your old town.
Another great video. And, once again, you triggered another memory. I grew up in SE WI, north of Milwaukee. We were served by Chicago and Northwestern passenger service to Chicago. My parents decided the family should go to downtown Chicago to see the decoration for Christmas, including the department stores, and their windows. Not to mention seeing Santa. We took the train down and back. I was fairly young, and don't remember many details. But that adventure has stuck with me to this day. Thanks
Happy memories I’m sure 😊
Another delightful video! I left Chicago before Metra took over, so I don't remember the suburban railroads having anything like a Christmas train. On intercity trains, I know the Chicago and Northwestern used to decorate dining cars for Christmas. I wonder about parlor cars and lounge cars. The Rock Island used to roll out their spare intercity coaches at holiday times--old hand-me-down Southern Pacific cars still in SP paint, aluminum body and trucks with red letter boards. On RI suburban service, they were still running 1920s arch roof cars painted black with white lettering. Locals called them "Al Capone cars" since they were from his era, painted a color that only he could love. But then, it was hard to paint over Pullman green. I know. I tried painting over a Pullman Green coach on my HO layout with CNW Stagecoach Yellow. Without the lead base that made that yellow work, it didn't cover well at a;;. I tried so many coats that the rivets were disappearing!
But the big memory of Chicago at Christmas time was State Street, especially Marshall Field's department store. Various Christmas scenes in all the windows, and inside the store, a giant Christmas tree in the lightwell that reached up to the ??? floor. And the tree looked to be as tall as the lightwell! Your delightful video brought back so many fond old memories. Thank you and see you next year!
You know The CKM Chicago. Awesome!
I caught the Metra holiday train on the Rock Island District. Definitely going to see the Metra Electric's holiday train next year.
Thanks for taking us with you on your adventures. I look forward to seeing what you have in store for us in 2024.
I heard about the Metra holiday train and what they did about it the first time this year. I’m hoping to be in town for it next year after I wasn’t able to this year. I hope I can go during the first weekend of December to also see the Canadian Pacific one. The next time I see that train will be the first time I ever see it in real life. I hope that’s when they have it and that I can see it somewhere where it’s scheduled and when exactly.
I think Chicago's Christmas L train may be the best Christmas train of all. It has a Santa sleigh in an open car with an actual Santa waving at people. They really go all out!
I adore the CTA holiday train
Great ! You deserve a big heap of oliebollen ! Enjoy!
Have a most excellent new year in 2024 !
Santa only flies EMD - lovely that they share the opportunity to ride the special decorative trains just as they are - for me as a crowd-averse person, that would be a huge plus - looking forward to seeing how you move on in the next year, you have a perspective that few can match \m/
Santa needs to open his mind towards Siemens lol
That is really nice. It is a shame not more transit systems, to my knowledge at least, does stuff like this. Also, the decorated L with Santa on board is is a great way to get into the holiday spirit riding the trains. NYC should take some notes from Chicago.
Nice! Thank you for sharing!
So fun! I had no idea they did this!
Looking forward to your videos in 2024!

Great video! I snagged a ride on one of these trains completely by accident on an outbound BNSF train a few weeks ago. The conductor of the train was clearly leaning into the holidays too - he looked a lot like Santa! Happy new year!
Happy accident!
Merry xmas another awesome video
Happy New Year's to you and yours!

Same to you!

Hey cool vids. I just saw your Maya vid. Have you heard about the Interocianic line opened in Mexico for cargo and passenger traffic…. It be interesting to hear your opinion and view of the train.
Happy New Year! 🥳
You too!
0:53 that’s insane
Very special that Metra put that cars in regular service. When NS in the Netherlands would do that, it would be demolished in a day.🤔
I wish the MBTA would do this.
Saw these locos in regular service. I didn’t know that the interior decorations were there too. Not sure how one would know their schedules in order to plan a ride.
The schedules were all available online!
@@Thom-TRA I’ll look for those next year.
are you gonna do the cta hoilday train
Not this year
@NS: Please take notice of what dan be done with a little bit of effort 😉
NS and effort are not two words that go together very often
@@Thom-TRA unfortunately very true Thom. Can't wait for order operators to really compete on the core network.
