She originally wrote and recorded this song as a young woman. It's faster paced and ironic coming from someone so young. This version, from an older, wiser Joni, is just devastating. 😢 She painted the cover!
Do you have any idea what pain she had already been through when she wrote this. There is something about a difficult life that brings great maturity at a tender age.
She's done three versions of this song - the original in 1968, this one, and the new version she sang at this year's Grammy's. All three of them are masterpieces.
I love this version. This is an older Joni Mitchell, singing with the wisdom of age and life experience. She did the first version when young and probably filled with hurt. You should listen to both….to see if you agree. Love your channel.💕💕💕
Grew up with this lovely lady's voice in our house. She was with me, just like Cat Stevens. They were/are both incredible gifts. Thank you so much for sharing this one.
It was so great to see Joni Mitchell in her first appearance on the Grammy Awards this year. After 50+ years of writing songs for others and herself, the Grammy performance was much more like this recording. Her younger voice was an octave higher and sounded almost childlike and playful at times, and angelic at times.
Im soooo glad you found Joni. She is one of the best song writers to ever live She wrote about the human experience in a way we all can relate That is talent and maybe bit of magic!
Hey Jamal. I've been a subscriber for over 5 years. Joni painted that album cover... She's an artist above all else... Glad you're still hanging in there. Joni is my my go to Female voice. I feel like she speaks for women everywhere as well as the rest of humanity to a certain extant. She's an old lady now, but I still love her like I did when I was a teen 50 years ago...
I've never had a song reach out and poke me in the eye before. That must be the reason my eyes are watering. I've heard this song many times before, but this version is special.
When we're young, our lives are full of hopes and dreams to be fulfilled but, as we age, our dreams don't always turn out the way we had hoped and we become cynical about life as our dreams become illusions. Yet, when we reminisce about life, it's the illusions that gave us hope and joy that we recall.
I had such a different image for what I thought it would be… married after college (I was engaged), lots of kids, white picket fence, full time mom hosting all the holiday functions, etc. Well, broke off engagement, went and got a Masters Degree from Harvard, was selected 40 Under 40 in a major city, and even outdid the goals I set for myself in my career. I never had kids (couldn’t), ended up living with someone til they passed away, and had the most charmed life I could ever imagine… I never saw any of it happening that way. But so thankful I appreciated the life I had vs the life I dreamed of and hoped for til I was in my 30s. I look back and wondered at times what would have happened if I never broke off engagement - he ended up having exactly the life HE wanted (found a wife who was happy to fall in line)- I made the right decision. I am alone now, my entire family has passed. But I still am thankful for the life I got (even the bad stuff so I could appreciate the good stuff).
Please.listen to the original. You can barely recognize the melody with all the jazz improv. Sure, she's bored of.the melody.... And we know the melody... But first time listeners may not.
Loved this song all my life but Judy Collins was my first awareness of it, at 7 years old. I just thought it was pretty, Jonie's version is just beautiful, and honest. Hearing her sing it now, gives it all new meaning both heartbreaking and hopeful ❤
She originally recorded this in 1969. This version was made in 2000 (Recorded Live). Both albums have a painting of her on the cover. She actually painted both of them. One from 1969 and this one from 2000.
Vince Mendoza's arrangement is absolutely stunning which won a Grammy award in 2000 for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). I remember when this record came out and was stunned with emotion on first listen and still get emotional every time I hear it. This is musical artistry at its finest on every level.
I'm familiar with this song, but had no idea she wrote it! I felt EVERYTHING while listening...with tears in my eyes. Then I learned the back story! Oh my goodness - Incredible!!
This song brings me to tears. It reminds me of my daughter and her daughter (my granddaughter) they love this song and are always singing it. ❤ My two very specials girls!❤️❤️
This song was written and originally recorded by Mitchell, however, Judy Collins has the best known version, in 1968. Also, Neil Diamond has a fantastic version.
The songs on this album are placed in an order to chart a relationship from start to finish and beyond. It's like a movie for the ears, and those orchestral arrangements just tug at everything you feel with. It's hard to think of another singer whose voice has morphed quite as much: from the high crystalline clarity of Young Joni in that yellow taxi to the badass swagger of the Shadows and Light tour, and on to the huskier and deeper, dark chocolate and caramel we hear now. While other singers have been grazing in the home paddock, Joni has always been off in the distance clearing fences, uncatchable. Why is she uncatchable? Because she came to us already inoculated with poetry and loaded with musical curiosity and moxie. I think the great jazz saxophonist, Wayne Shorter only ever picked up the phone and brought his soprano sax twice for "pop" recordings. One was Steely Dan and Aja; the other was Joni for this recording. And it was so well worth the trip. He takes us right to the end of Joni's infinity pool, and over the lip. I can tell they took you there, Jamel, oh yes I can. Mr Shorter saddles up again for the companion piece, A Case of You, with similar effect. Joni is not just a benchmark for singer-songwriters: she is an international treasure, and I love seeing people discover what the fuss is all about.
Joni's voice and song interpretation is amazing here. But a big shout out to the arranger, Vince Mendoza, too. For instance, I love how the rolling strings in the beginning never strongly imply the root note of the key of the song (keeping things ambiguously perfect for the lyrics) till the first chorus and it's just grabs your heart when you first hear and feel that. The whole thing is so good that I heard many of the session players from the orchestra were in tears after the recording. I usually am after hearing it myself.
I grew up loving this song sung by Judy Collins which was a big hit, then I discovered Joni Mitchell's album version and loved that for different reasons... And now... OMG... This extremely Soulful version is incredible. I've never heard it before. Now there are three versions of the song that I love... If you have time, check out the version song by Judy Collins and also Joni Mitchell's original album version.... And I'm glad to see that you've already heard Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi, but all of her earliest albums are worth listening to in their entirety...
Thanks for posting this version. Joni’s voice has lost its soprano register with age but is still a great instrument. This song has become much more meaningful as she (and we) get older. And you’re right, you can hear the pain and disappointment in this version.
Hi Jamal, Beautiful reaction to this later in life version. It’s haunting. I’m more familiar with the younger Joni version. For your Christmas spirited song her “River” is closest but not quite such a song. Look for the song with the animation. It’s a gut punch song, in a good way. I’m going to ask how to make a request. It’s for a current young artist who is definitely “keeping great music alive.” She is 20 and singing the songs of my youth and doing them justice. I’m 68 and that’s saying something. In addition to her own natural voice she covers such artists as Carpenters, Olivia Newton-John, Joni, The Beatles, Heart, Carly Simon, Patsy Cline and on and on. On some of the covers she has a way of bringing forth the proper sound of the artist but not be mimicking. It just happens and is natural and beautiful. I’m going to list two “proof of concept” video Shorts and the song I’d like you to react to. The song is an audio only so the Short videos will give you the visual of the artist. Her name is Tori Holub (pronounced with soft vowels Hohluhb). The Shorts are self produced. The song was professionally produced. Her UA-cam presence is pale in comparison to “I” and TT. The second Short I’ll list has less than 4K views here but 1.1M on “I”. I’d like to make a donation to the channel for support. I see super thanks is available, I don’t see a rate for a request or do you not take requests? I don’t know. I’ve subscribed for awhile but just throw things in the comments. Your motto made me want to do something. Because it’s what she’s all about. Thanks! Joe Short 1. River (Joni, cover) ua-cam.com/users/shortsa2w7XT02xsc?si=BNoVLiFZS-YtEE_1 Short 2. River is one of my favorite songs of all time. It's sad, but the holidays are difficult for so many people, and Joni expresses that feeling of loneliness and wanting to get away so well. Please give it a listen if you haven't already
Joni is a genius Composer and Painter. "I sing my sadness and paint my gladness." If you haven't, I hope you do a deep dive into her catalogue. BTW, members of the London Symphony Orchestra CRIED during the recording of this version, as did luminaries at the Grammys this year. Watch that, and watch the faces. As for "Christmas" music, her song "River" is a classic, even though it's not a noel.
She wrote this I think at the age of 23..... Such musicality, such poetry and wisdom - she's a world class artist! ❤ And of course she did the cover painting too!
Trying to figure life out has been a full time job for me. The why’s, what ifs…at 64 , you think I woulda given up or learned that I CANNOT FIGURE IT OUT!! Beeeaautiful song from a soul that understood that much will never be understood…it’s just (the seen) an illusion. Great review as always…floating right along with you Jamel! ☁️☁️☁️
When they used this music in Love Actually when she found out her husband had cheated on her…the sorrow from Karen was so palpable…it always makes me cry! And I’ve watched that damn movie a bazillion times!
I have never heard this older, wiser version of this song. Wow! The emotion in it that can only come from life experience and the wisdom of age. You really should listen to the original version from a very young Joni Mitchell...just as a comparison. Again, Wow!

Check out her album Miles of Aisles. It's live but sounds surprisingly good & it has a lot of her greatest hits on it. Fun fact: Prince once said Joni was in his top 5 favorite female artists of all time. He loved her lyrics.
Joni wrote a song about the daughter she gave up. It's called "A Little Green". Heartbreaking if you know the backstory. They eventually found each other again when the daughter was an adult.

She painted the cover!
You are so right as I am sad though admire what Joni did with this version. At almost 64 I feel the song tells my story!
I never heard this version. It's beautiful!
One of my favorite albums ever is her album Hejira. I can listen to that album on endless repeat.
It really is. Such talent.
Do you have any idea what pain she had already been through when she wrote this. There is something about a difficult life that brings great maturity at a tender age.
I prefer the younger version
She's done three versions of this song - the original in 1968, this one, and the new version she sang at this year's Grammy's. All three of them are masterpieces.
I just love how the classical and jazz world come together with Joni

This song just makes the tears stream down my face😭. Beautiful 😍
Listening to Joni can clear the shallow crap rolling around in your head. She’s an angel man!
Aaah but sometimes the shallow can bring relief?
totally agree. I remember my teenage years listening to her stuff now.
Love Joni a very gifted singer
Grew up with this lovely lady's voice in our house. She was with me, just like Cat Stevens. They were/are both incredible gifts. Thank you so much for sharing this one.

It is far out how she sets us up by singing about clouds, then it is over the falls when she switches to love and life.
I've never had a song reach out and poke me in the eye before. That must be the reason my eyes are watering. I've heard this song many times before, but this version is special.

Very insightful
In this crazy world...very lil love and friendship! Hope everyone votes right this election.
I love every version of both sides now I've heard. It always makes me cry.
Thank you Jamel for bringing old reactions back. I hope they stay up and you continue to do what you can. I can watch them over and over again!
Loved this song all my life but Judy Collins was my first awareness of it, at 7 years old.
I just thought it was pretty, Jonie's version is just beautiful, and honest. Hearing her sing it now, gives it all new meaning both heartbreaking and hopeful ❤
Of the 3 versions, this is the one that totally slays me. An absolute masterpiece, the lyrics, the arrangement, everything about it.
Yes, it does for me too. I think for one big reason: I am am older now too....and see it differently. like her in her expression. love it.

The legend... Joni Mitchell!
Ethereal, the strings and her voice. Sublime.
Love Joni! Have her Blue Album. This sing always makes me cry. Losing the innocence of youth. Great reaction.
"I really don't know life at all" That just sums it all up!
Joni was one of Prince’s greatest influences. Listen to his cover of Joni’s “A Case of You” ❤ Two genius artists.
This song was written and originally recorded by Mitchell, however, Judy Collins has the best known version, in 1968. Also, Neil Diamond has a fantastic version.
Love the Judy Collins version just as much. This version is so beautiful from an older joni
absolute legend!
First heard this version when watching "Love Actually". It made me cry then, and ever since. Love her more mature voice in this version.

No autotune here folks....such a beautiful voice.
Her song The River is kind of a Xmas song. Another great one.

An older woman who really understands her words now. Thanks! You like A Case of You from the same album - that's where the cover pic comes from
This song makes me cry😢
Joni is a painter and alot of her covers she painted...I live 2hrs away from where Joni grew up in Saskatchewan Canada ❤🇨🇦
I'm loving this. This is the music of my youth.
Of the many songs Joni has done this is amongst her best and most well known!😢❤
The song River is Christmas themed. Beautiful song
You picked such a moving rendition of her singing this song. You're right about it being transcendent. ❤️☁️
I'd never heard this song before clicking on this video, so we experienced it together for the first time. Pretty cool. Have a nice day folks.
Beautiful song. And she painted that self portrait.
AND WELCOME TO THE MUSIC OF JONI ❤
She's been one of my favorite artists for her entire career and my entire life. She is a BRILLIANT songwriter and a genius performer.
Hi Jamal,

Such great songwriting that it gives voice to something in your soul that you didn't know you felt.
One of my all time favourites 🔥. 🫡!🇬🇧!
How many different emotions can be in 1 song? Joni is a Masterpiece!
Joni has Herbie Hancock on piano and Wayne Shorter heading up the album! She is amazing!
The winner of the best picture last year was CODA. Emilia Jones sang this song and just nailed it.
Have a listen to her “River” for Christmas themes
Sad Christmas theme. She wrote River after a breakup just before Christmas. (Graham Nash, if I recall correctly.)
River is one of my favorite songs of all time. It's sad, but the holidays are difficult for so many people, and Joni expresses that feeling of loneliness and wanting to get away so well. Please give it a listen if you haven't already
He reviewed that one a couple years ago. One of my favorites!!!!
For me this mature version hits very differently since it comes long after living through many life’s experiences… incredibly relatable and beautiful💛
Never heard this recording. Powerful.
The show "After Life" (the whole series) ends with this song. It is hauntingly beautiful.
Joni is a genius Composer and Painter. "I sing my sadness and paint my gladness." If you haven't, I hope you do a deep dive into her catalogue. Magic! Thx for sharing J! 🎶
She painted that cover too! And it is the great Wayne Shorter on the sax.
Joni is, was, and always will be the GOAT! Was lucky enough to see her in concert:)))
This is different than the one that she made popular. This one is more soulful and I like it a lot. Thanks for playing it.
This song was magical when it came out years ago. You can't help but sing along with it.
It’s one of the greatest songs ever written if not the best
Awwwww yes Jamel!! Listen to a live version of A Case of You, or Amelia!! Joni is amazing!! ❤❤❤❤
I'm so glad you chose to listen to this song.
I am amazed you have not yet listened to this song. Classic. Legendary. Sublime.
HUGS TO YOU, JAMEL!!! LOVE me some JONI MITCHELL!!! You should check out her song River....makes me cry...but, SO GOOD! Have a SUPER WEEKEND!!
Great reaction. She is the best. My favorite since day 1. Hope you listen to more of her music. Hi from NYC. ✌
When they used this music in Love Actually when she found out her husband had cheated on her…the sorrow from Karen was so palpable…it always makes me cry! And I’ve watched that damn movie a bazillion times!
Since you mentioned the cover art, you might like to know that she painted it. 🙂
I have never heard this older, wiser version of this song. Wow! The emotion in it that can only come from life experience and the wisdom of age. You really should listen to the original version from a very young Joni Mitchell...just as a comparison. Again, Wow!
I love this version, but also the one from when she's younger. Both have strengths..
She's from the 60's and her voice is from chain smoking but it is so transcendent. This album is vintage! Judy Collins sang this also. I listened to her in the 60's also. Play "Send in the Clowns" by her, Jamal. 😎✌️♥️
Although I've always been aware of Joni Mitchell & her talents and place in Rock & Roll history , I never listened to any of her albums but knew a few of her songs but not this one . When she recently performed this at The Grammy's . Joni is the GOAT!
I remember singing this song in grade school choir and joni mitchell wrote it but judy collins made it famous on the pop radio stations in the early 60s
Album BLUE every song wonderful.
One of her songs, although not really a holiday song, gets played during the season. It's a great song to check out any time.
I Wish I Had A River
The later version of this song, her first was very ethereal, you can tell she has lived life with this one
One word: Masterpiece
Only one Joni Mitchell. A true original. What an artist. An American treasure
Haha …she is Canadian.
Check out her album Miles of Aisles. It's live but sounds surprisingly good & it has a lot of her greatest hits on it. Fun fact: Prince once said Joni was in his top 5 favorite female artists of all time. He loved her lyrics.
Funny, tha is a song I really listen nearly on a daily basis, since I first heard it about 2 months ago!
Thanks for sharing
Did you hear her do this at the Grammys? That will rip your heart out... Oh, and she won a grammy this year too...for new stuff...dang...
Not my favorite version of the song but Joni Mitchell was always a favorite! Try Judy Collins ... Send in the Clowns.
Try Judy Collins Both Sides Now
We still need a back to back reaction of "Sugar Mountain" by Neil Young and Joni's response song "The Circle Game".
Here for this! This is the song she did she did at the Grammy's. Watch that one with a dry eye, I dare you.
Glad you are back to music. Maybe I will tune in again.
Giving me goosebumps! I love your channel!!
I guess this may be the song to play on my funeral. Never heard so profound lyrics.
Joni wrote a song about the daughter she gave up. It's called "A Little Green". Heartbreaking if you know the backstory. They eventually found each other again when the daughter was an adult.
So glad to discover you are back with the music reactions. Fingers crossed 🤫
Thank you Jamal 🙏
Love you man! Always makes me smile to watch one of your videos.
She collaborated with most of the greats of her time and struck out on her own. Wayne Shorter and Harbor Hancock play on this release
I highly recommend listening to "For Free" by Joni Mitchell. David Crosby did a really cool version of the song as well on his last album.
So beautiful....this version when she has aged is haunting
