Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 лип 2024
- The Narragansett Trail is a trail that offers a scenic 15 mile walk through Pachaug State Forest with the opportunity to stay in a couple backpacking shelters along the way.
Starting at the Gladys Foster Preserve, the trail travels past Wyassup lake to the Green Falls section of Pachaug state forest and on into Rhode Islands Arcadia Management area.
Following the Narragansett Trail offers the opportunity to further your hike by joining the 25 mile Pachaug trail around Beach pond or the 13 mile Nehantic trail into the Chapman area of Pachaug State Forest. Any way you decide this is a trail worth walking.
Check out the Pachaug shelter patch challenge for links to the gpx files or specifics on how to complete the challenge!

Fantastic video. Beautiful scenery. Thanks for taking us along. Take care.
Thank you and thanks for coming along!! ATB.
Nice walkabout, Gary. I enjoyed the winterish trek through the hills. Have a good weekend, you supermodel.
Lol Dixon, supermodels! Thank you! Hope you are having a great weekend. :)
Gary, great trip! I have been through the gorge since 2019. The bridges are new. I love that section. I last stayed at Legendwood in December of 2020. It has a great sunrise view but no water nearby. I look forward to the continuation of the adventure. Take care
John, there was a decent stream nearby but none at the shelter. The one nearby slows during the summer and I’ve had to break through the ice to get at it lol.
I was out this weekend, will be another video soon thank you!
Wow What a great hike I really like the beautiful view of the Mountain Looks like you guys had a great time in CT
It was a great time thank you! Have a great week. All the best, Gary.
That seems like a pretty sweet trip. I had no idea Pachaug forest had shelters like that.
Hi. Enjoyed this video.
Background: I was stationed at the sub base in Groton (1971-1974).
I had just begun to be interested in hiking and started hiking the blue trails in SE CT when we were in port.
I LOVED the Narragansett Trail which I hiked in sections. I hiked the Pequot Trail, which then extended to the Narragansett near the western trailhead of the Narragansett. I hiked some of the Pachaug Trail, including the part over Mt. Misery.
There were no shelters then, and the Narragansett did not have any road walking, especially up RT 49.
If you'd like to see the 1971 CT Walk Book pages for the Narragansett, I'll be glad to email to you...
Thanks for the video, I'll look for others on your channel.
God Bless!
Hello Ken. They had the CT walks book in 71? I don’t even know what iteration I have but I didn’t think they went back over 50 years. I would very much enjoy that. I am sure it is a bit differently located than it is now. The Pequot trail, then, went directly through where the casino is now and the Narragansett trail had miles that made it a continuous hike through the woods as opposed to the sections it is now when I was a kid so that map must be pretty cool.
Feel free to email it to me for sure. I would very much enjoy that. Maybe even a couple notable pictures you may have if you don’t mind?

All the best, Gary.
great video thanks for sharing
Larry, Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. All the best, Gary.
I lived in CT for a year and was surprised by how much beauty and natural surroundings if offered
It really does. I’ve been here more than anywhere else and I haven’t gotten tired of it yet! Thanks for watching, All the best, Gary.
Awesome video Gary. Makes me wanna get out on those trails this week
Thank you! It is a great walk, I strongly recommend it.
Nice hike thanks
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Nice area. I’ve stayed in a few of those shelters. My buddy built that one as an Eagle Scout project. You’ve got to call ahead to the DEP to book them. It’s free. My favorite is at Great Meadow Brook Pond.
John, that is my favorite also! They changed the procedure a bit. You gotta fill out a form and email it in now, still easy and still free! I really dig the plaque at the legend wood shelter, he did good things with it!
Hahaha! Yeah, your super models walking the the best catwalk in the world! The great out doors!
😂 yeah lol! So right on that, it is an awesome runway! Hope all is good Karl. Have a great weekend!
I pass that Green Falls shelter occasionally while running. Glad to see you staying at it. That whole Green Falls area is great.
My buddies and I ran the whole Narragansett Trail back when you could still access the gun club land. Hopefully the reroutes get finished as the section that leads to Lantern Hill is still being worked on.
How nice would that be! I hadn’t walked that far since I was a kid. The trail is awesome. I did a bit of the Nehantic this weekend, for sure not running lol!
Have you gotten to stay at any of the shelters?
@@ConnecticutBackcountry no I have tried any of the shelters yet.
@@RhodySeth it makes a nice light trail walk as opposed to having to lug a shelter but else, they are kind of close together.
its nice to see they put a metal roof on legend wood shelter
It sounds great in the rain too! ATB, Gary.
LOL...Your driver had the look of "better you than me!" Look at those beautiful skies! Wow, shelter and everything! Do you have to book it ahead of time...or first come first served? Just love the different variety that can be found among boulders and woods. Swiftly running waters are always a bonus! Awesome explore! Have a great weekend...Bruce and Otis
Bruce, hello! She is more than just a driver! She is the lady that puts up with my jaunts or imperfections. She is the one I miss while I’m out there and look forward to coming back to! That is Amy and she is my better half. =D
The day was perfect and I thoroughly enjoy the difference in aesthetics of the local woods and the CFPA does a great job of routing the trails. It doesn’t compare to some of the places I’ve seen in your videos though!
Give Otis some love for me. ATB, Gary.
@@ConnecticutBackcountry Amazing, everyone for sure needs a person like Amy in their life! You are one lucky man, Gary! Otis looks at me and says, "What was that hug for?" I told him Gary sends his love! lol
Nice hike sir
Thank ya sir! Yours is next! =D
I have to hike this.
💯agree! I recommend this completely!
Great video! Have stayed at Legend Wood and had plans to stay @Peg Mill in January but couldn't access parking without a 4WD vehicle. Looking forward to part 2!
I highly recommend it! I was out this weekend. If I can piece it together in time I hope to have it done this week. It is a shame you couldn’t get in there, I would be a nice stroll and pretty setting with some snow around! ATB Sue, hope the weekend is going great!
@@ConnecticutBackcountry How is the tenting space at Peg Mill? Planning a trip with some friends but not everyone wants to stay in the shelter.
@@sueb860 you should be able to get a few tents around the shelter or a hammock or two. There is a spot when you head toward the shelter that can house a tent also. Depending on how large the group, you should be able to accommodate everyone.
@@ConnecticutBackcountry thanks Gary!
@@sueb860 any time Sue!
Trudging along Route 49? I bet you entered the woods across the road from the old Baptist church on 49. Know the area well!
Oh bro they changed the trail some. Now it’s a walk from legend wood rd to Tom wheeler rd. No more some down the road hop. Hope you are having a great weekend!
Nicely done! You're camera work and editing is looking super good. Keep up the stellar work.
Jameson, thank you so much!! I absolutely appreciate feedback, good or bad but to be honest, really appreciate the good lol! :)
one word sums it up.....Brrrrrrrrrr.....
=D Perfect temperature! lol.
Ha! Had some Blair witch vibes there for a bit lol 😆
😆For sure did lol !! The walk took a bit longer than expected so some night time setup. luckily for me it was only a sleeping bag i had to get together lol.
