people can't just "not move back" or even move away. A huge amount of people in new orleans do not have the resources to even make a move. They are barely able to keep their homes now. They do not have cars. New Orleans has a rich culture and history, you cannot just abandon it...

Laurie Regal this area should have never been built up to live on. It was swamp and wetlands before humans decided to destroy it. So I have zero sympathy for people that live near water when they know the risk and if you didn't know it's your fault for not looking into it. There should be no funding or government assistance for living in a area with a known risk like New Orleans. We as a country shouldn't have to be punished for paying for everyone's else's mistakes.

When the French first settled New Orleans, they established the city in what's now called the French Quarter because it's actually harder soil that's about 10' above sealevel and used it as a port for shipping up the river since rivers were the highways in the 16 and 1700s. Then the city started expanding by cutting down swamps and bogs and putting buildings there and that's why most of the current city is under water. It should've stayed in the original part of the city. Places like Metarie and Kenner are bad off because Bayou Gentilly and Bayou Metarie used to supply the surrounding soil with water. Peat shrinks like a sponge when the water supply is cut down.

I used to get so aggravated when all I hear is “NOLA this NOLA that” when the subject of Katrina comes up. Over the years I got over it but I can at least say that both Louisiana and Mississippi were affected greatly by Katrina. However people who were not in MS during Katrina will never understand the frustration the media caused us when our MS coast cities all looked like they were nuked by a bomb and then when you talk to other people from other places about Katrina, people ask “Oh I thought the storm hit New Orleans?” -_-
During Katrina in MS, I watched a tornado touchdown and wipe out an entire FAMILY, buildings collapsing, 9 hours of constant 120mph wind and roaring, and then after the storm, we lived outside for two weeks praying that it would rain cause of the heat and dehydration. That experience really messed with me physically and mentally.
Yet, the levees break in NOLA and all of a sudden (me as a MS Katrina survivor) according to the media, I was no longer classified as a Katrina victim. Don’t get me wrong, what happened in NOLA was messed up! But let me just say this, Mississippi got brunt of the STORM, Louisiana’s main issue was the levees breaking -which was due to poor management and the priorities of the city.
You can ask just about any Mississippi resident about what I just wrote and they will agree 100%.

@@hudsonmatz2123 Also, from what I can remember, Katrina was originally projected to make a direct impact in NOLA. Hours before making landfall, the storm took a strong right turn and the majority of the storm went up Mississippi. The entire state was impacted. And we were all under the impression that we would only get parts of it, but we were dead wrong. And at that point, it was way too late to pack up and evacuate.
