Two of the very first civilizations - Greek and Persian - fought for millennia, so it is not a surprise that some of the most memorable battles of the ancient era were between them. The battle of Salamis of 480 BC was central in defence of free Greece against the Persian invasion and can be considered a focal point the history of mankind. I mean that Greco-Persian wars caused Peloponnesian wars and they eventually led to the rise of Macedon and as Greeks started losing their positions across the Eastern Mediterranean, Carthage filled the vacuum and that, in a way, led to the war over Sicily. It is all a bit of a stretch, of course. :-)

Yep agreed, the Peloponnesian and also Diadochi wars weakened Greek hegemony in the Mediterranean which paved the way for the Carthaginians and Romans.

Sepehr Voshmgir Despite the burning of Persepolis, he showed immediate regret, just as Xerxes had when he burned down Athens. Alexander evidently had a deep respect for Persian civilisation or at least felt compelled to portray such respect. He recruited many Persians in his Army, giving many of them critical positions and can be seen even as early as the Battle of Hydaspes. Alexander was also an admirer of Cyrus, mainly through Xenephon’s Cyropaedia.

    Awesome video
Fun fact Themistocles who defeated Xerxes was later forced to Flee Greece. Ironically, he was forced to flee to Persia the same civilization which he had defeated. Artaxerxes, the son of Xerxes, Grants him amnesty
"I, Themistocles, am come to you, who did your house more harm than any of the Hellenes, when I was compelled to defend myself against your father's invasion-harm, however, far surpassed by the good that I did him during his retreat, which brought no danger for me but much for him." (Thucydides)

    • @bagiee1
      @bagiee1 6 років тому +1

He didnt flee to Persia...he ended up in Macedonia which was ruled by the Persian Artaxerxes at that time.
After his death, his body is said to be taken in Persia. He died because he took poison, after Artaxerxes, asked him
to help him suppress the revolution that happened in Egypt. But Themistocles didnt do it, because he didnt like to go against the Greek interests.

The city of Athens was left to be taken since all the troops went to Salamis because of the Delphi Oracle prophecy.
"'Though all else shall be taken, Zeus, the all seeing, grants that the wooden wall only shall not fail."
Argument raged as to what this 'wooden wall' could mean, with many believing it to be the thorn bushes surrounding the Acropolis. Themistocles had an answer of his own: the wooden wall, he argued, was nothing less than the fleet they had spent these last few years hurriedly constructing.
He won the day and then gave the order for Athens itself to be abandoned…

I don't think Modern Greece hates Iran as well. This is just history. Even in ancient times, various Greeks aligned with Persia than Greece. Greece had 3 tribes, Dorian, Ionian, & Aeolians. Athens represented the Ionians mostly, and Sparta the Dorians but later Macedonia also Dorian took over as main power. Even Roman Greece or Eastern Roman Empire had more to do with Arab or Ottoman invasion than Persians. Modern Greece has zero hate towards Iran. I think they are considered friendly nations towards each other.

So, most of the retellings I read claim that after Peloponnesian forces retreated to the east to defend on the Isthmus, only Athenian hoplites were left on Salamis and most of these hoplites embarked on the ships. The problem is, we rarely hear about non-hoplite Greek warriors in this period. I understand how heavy armor of hoplites can be detrimental to the ships, but most of my sources, again, agree that although ship sizes were similar for 2 navies, Greeks had smaller contingents of foot soldiers on their vessels, but even in this case had an advantage, as their soldiers had heavier panoply.

Actually, this is what I find weird. Battle of Grunwald and Battle of Kircholm documentaries should've skyrocketed easily. When Reply History channel (pretty much dead right now) made a video about Battle of Warsaw 1920 it got half a million views in mere days. The same should have happened with other battles you presented.
Hm... Battle of Vienna or Battle of Klushino should do the trick easily, or Battle of Bzura. Just remember that when it comes to Russian historians (I'm referring mostly to battle of klushino here) are far from being unbiased. If you need any help with sources, just let me know via priv :)
P.S. Try to put word "Poland" in the title or at least in the description. That should make the algorithm to show your video to Poles. Unfortunately word "Polish" doesn't do the trick.
P.S. 2 Did you saw "The Unconquered" video on youtube?

This is the most decisive and important battle in military history. Not just "one of". After the killing of the King of Sparta and the burning of Athens, the Greeks were in dire straits. Compounded with the fact that the Thebans had been medized and the Thracian colonies remained loyal to Xerxes, this could have easily led to the extinction of the Hellenic people. Moreover, Xerxes could have used his invasion as the land-bridge to the rest of Europe. The very fact that we have our culture and systems of government directly stem from this battle and ensured that the Spartans at Thermopylae had not died in vain. This was the first victory of the Greeks in this invasion and the subsequent victories at Plataea and Mycale were just its aftershocks. The victory at the Battle of Salamis is indeed the greatest achievement of the Greek people, which is saying a great deal because of all the other great contributions of Greece in science, philosophy, governance, historiography and exploration.

    • @FezMooseLive
      @FezMooseLive 11 місяців тому +1

Yeah, this is nothing compared to the combined achievements of Greece as a whole.
Plenty of people of been on losing side, and some have even came back and won. The Lepur King Baldwin IV is a example, his forces were usually outnumbered but with thought he came out on top.
The 300 staying and granting time was one of the deciding factors, giving his allies a chance rebuild their forces and think of ways to defeat Xerxes.
Greece as a whole, with its science and philosophy has changed the whole world, not just one area.
And I dont think this would lead to the Hellenic peoples extinction. It seemed like Xerxes intended to keep the established civilizations in tact, Athens was just a example.
(Thank goodness Alexander got them back 100+ years later)
However I'm a "stinky american who's knowledge only extends so far, and I would love to be corrected if wrong as the Hellenic lore amazes me

I'm from IRAN. I wish there were no such ugly human behaviors in the civilization record of these two ancient and beautiful lands. Damn wars due to ugly human traits such as sedition, lies, jealousy and of course lack of anger control, not usually among nations but more among politicians and rulers. There may always be a seemingly good reason for war and fighting, but there are dozens of better reasons for agreement and peace. Also, although it is said that the reason for these wars was the sedition of the Greeks themselves (I'm not sure), but in any case it should not be forgotten that unfortunately the essence of any empire (Achaemenid empire and all world empires, from the past to the present) is tied to war and fight. Unfortunately.

Many people project the modern world onto the ancient one and the Hollywood is a big offender in this regard. Unfortunately, these projections obscure the motivations and reasoning of the ancient peoples (and rulers). Some things then appear nonsensical and are hard to understand. A feudal lord switching sides in a middle of a battle isn't a "traitor" (in the sense treason is understood nowadays...he's still a backstabbing bastard). That makes no sense prior to the emergence of the nation state and nationalism. Feudal lords do not care about the "motherland" or whatever, they care about their own fiefdoms. Their subjects care about their own smaller ones and the peasants care very little who the lord is as long as taxes are low and as long as they are protected from raids. Ancient empires were a bit different in that they did not run on a feudal basis (which is probably also why they often both gained lands and were conquered so quickly) but nobody was a Persian or Macedonian "patriot" and apart from some actual Romans from the city of Rome itself, nobody was a Roman patriot either.

"Democracy" today is Not as Improved as it was in Ancient Athens.

      in Ancient Athens.

Vagelis 4VP: You can't possibly have an assembly of all citizens decide everything if your population is in millions. Switzerland (with their high degree of decentralization and many referenda) is probably the closest you can get to that in the modern setting. Also, note that unlike today in the Greek city states all women and poor men did not have right to vote. And of course not all city states were democracies, some, like Sparta, were monarchies.

What is left out of this video is documenting the genius of Themistocles.
It was he that insisted in Athens spending vast monies in creating a large fleet of triremes, which were fast sleek vessels that acted as high speed battling rams in sinking the wider, slower Persian ships. Each ship could destroy several vessels in a battle.
It was he who planted disinformation by having double agents who gave the Persian commanders the wrong information before the battle of Salamis. The Persians were incorrectly informed that the Greeks were arguing with each other and would not provide a fight when confronted by the Persian fleet. They were in for a real surprise.
It was he who provided the overall Greek naval strategy that forced Xerxes and most of his army to leave Greece as without ships, they could not be supplied with food, reinforcements and weapons. Only a small force was left behind and were easily defeated.
For his brilliance and leadership, he was banished later from Athens.

As far as i know, there was an Athenean working as an advisor for Xerxes. He secretly met Themistocles and agreed to persuade Xerxes to attack, hence forcing the Greek fleet in to a battle. Themistocles did not inform the other generals about this until it wad done and over, thing that enraged the Spartan general that objected to such strategy. It always impressed me that Themistocles embraced the Athenean that was considered a traitor and was able to see past the "traitor" label and recognize a man that ultimately could not bring it to his heart to help the Persians win.

Themistocles send a slave that he had to inform the king that the Greeks are ready to flee and that he has to make a battle. That forced Xerxes to attack thenistocles later died in Persia and even if Xerxes lost many battles cause of him he didn't kill him he made him a government of an area later he had to attack to Athens but he couldn't and he killed himself. That's the story of Themistocles.

After xerexos, Ardeshir 1 known as long hand, and Darius ll, payed 30.000 gold coins to the spartan and peloponnese wars started (431-404 BC). Athens destroyed by spartan troops + Persian golds, and all lands which had separated from Persia, returned. Now after 2500 years Iran & Greece are good friends 💙💙💙

at the time Macedonia was actually a tributary state to Persia. Alexander I (not the famous one) even sent a herald on behalf of the Persians to Themistocles, before Xerxes sent actual Persians to Athens and Sparta.

The first king of the persian empire was the first ever man to mention the idea of human rights..... (he wrote down his human rights ideas on a stone object.... You can search it up).... Human rights.... And idea that many countries have not embraced after 2500 years since the reign of Cyrus the great..
