I loved the one at the beginning of Casino Royale, where he hasn't attained 007 status yet. We see the floor numbers as the elevator is going up, then cuts away as if to say "not yet 7". Nice. And maybe some credit to Dame Judi Dench's opening remark to Bond: "...I think you're a sexist, misogynist dinosaur. A relic of the Cold War..." Such a blatant callout to his 60's origins.

I never thought of that reference to the gun barrel opening from Daniel Craig's Casino Royale being a "pre-reference." The idea of all subsequent openings being a callback to his first kill IS very clever, and I don't believe I will ever see the gun barrel as anything else. Bravo, Robin, as always. Even though it's so very obvious and does undermine George Lazenby's performance even more than his presence already did, I always loved his "This never happened to the other fellow," despite decades of the ridiculous Bond Code Name Theory that it spawned. I like callbacks and injokes that don't call attention to themselves. Kinda like episodes of St. Elsewhere: slip in a silly reference, move on, and if the audience gets it, fine. If not, it doesn't interrupt the story. That's what I disliked about the cross-references in the later Brosnan era - THEY called attention to it, hovered over it, and it always stops the film cold. Admittedly, I didn't notice the images of former Bond girls scene until you mentioned it, precisely for the right reason - they didn't dwell on the images, they were just there - but the Brosnan references always came with a smirk, and sometimes a musical motif, which I disliked since it took us away from the story. Subtlety, people, is important sometimes, even if that's more of a foreign concept in Bond films than sexual fidelity.....
You missed a really good one. In Octopussy, after the auction when everyone is walking onto the street. Cubby Broccoli’s brand new Cadillac Seville, complete with California plates is parked right in front of Sotheby’s, intentionally in the shot. It appears again in Germany at the Circus, during the long, high shot. And it’s not the first time, in Thunderball, at the clinic, his Rolls is visible, parked out front. Other interesting vehicle references throughout the series, placing American cars in European settings when sales of American cars in Europe were rare, examples…….#1’s 1964 Ford Thunderbird in London (Thunderball), Ford Mustang in Goldfinger (Switzerland) , Mercury Cougar in OHMSS.
Egad Madonna's contribution to the theme songs. The one she did for the Austin Powers film was better. Still think they should have gotten Sade or Anita Baker when they were in their prime. Sade's "Killer Blow" could have been Bond-ish.

Branson got himself a cameo (his son also appears in the film, allegedly) in exchange for lending the crew a free plane for the airport scene. Bonus trivia: in a surprisingly petty move, Virgin competitor British Airways removed the cameo scene (and the plane itself) from the version of Casino Royale they showed as an in-flight movie. I often wonder if Virgin did the same to BA if they ever showed Die Another Day themselves, since the film features Bond flying with that airline (in the scene where a stewardess played by Roger Moore's daughter serves Bond a martini).
In regards to Lazenby's "this never happened to the other fellow' line from OHMSS wasn't a reference to Sean Connery but to the Prince from "Cinderella"! A beautiful girl runs off and all that's left are her shoes. Bond picks up Tracy's shoes as he says the line!

And I don't care if Lazenby or some producer or director said that - they lie all the time about what they intended in scenes (go listen to Ridley Scott or Chris Nolan). At the start of the film it is a very obvious reference to Connery. Even if it wasn't, don't you think at least one person on set would have said, "Hey, people are going to think that's a reference to Connery." So if nothing else they wanted people to at least mistakenly think it was a reference to Connery.
The 'poison pen' from Octopussy also appears (with some other past gadgets) in a scene deleted from A View to A Kill (where M goes to get Bond released from the French police station after the Paris chase).
For my taste, the series' past had become a little too much focus in the last movies. Craig was more often in the Aston Martin's seat than Connery, that has really lost novelity. I'm looking forward to No Time To Die (despite the lame title ) but I'm more curious about what they'll do next.
As gorgeous and iconic as the DB5 is as an automotive and cinematic work of art, I now can't stop thinking about how Top Gear exposed it as a dud in terms of performance. (Even back in the day, Aston-Martin lied outrageously about its performance, and today it's outperformed, easily, by a Honda Accord.)

Always wondered if the downer ending of On Her Majesty's Secret Service doomed Lazenby. Did the powers that be think that he"d always be associated with that tragedy and therefore couldn't pull off the devil may care womanizer?
No, Lazenby just quit. He's talked about it openly. In a nutshell, he came down with a bad case of counter-culture and received some extraordinarily bad advice from his guru that James Bond was an archaic character who nobody would go to see anymore.
Incidentally, although there are several nods to Tracey's death throughout the series, the one at the start of FYEO is the only one where she is named. In particular, that comment by Elektra in TND could just as easily be a reference to Paris's death in the previous film.
@@RJSRdg I'm not sure how that's possible. He didn't know he wasn't going to make any more when filming on OHMSS finished- it was only after the premiere that he announced his decision. Also, Tracy's death is in the Fleming novel as well.
That's not even Sean Connery in the first 3 films. The hat thing is weird because right through to the Moore film he still walks into the office wearing a hat, but you very very rarely see Bond actually wearing said hat.
Very true- it was stuntman Bob Simmons, Bond franchise regular notable for playing numerous henchmen (most notably Colonel Bouvar in Thunderball) and also the answer to my favourite devious Bond quiz question: who was the first person to play James Bond in the official Eon series? I believe they switched to Connery in Thunderball when the scene needed reshooting due to them using a different aspect ratio or something.
Some fans give On Her Majesty's Secret Service the raspberries but I like that film. It didn't need a ton of half ass gadgets from Q or invisible cars.
I think OHMSS is actually _over_ rated among Bond fans. The music is excellent, but Lazenby isn't, and I found the romance aspect too manipulative. Edit: Just my opinion!

Madonnas Song was the worst of all... until "Another way to die" came along. To think they chose this atrocity over "No good about goodbye" sung by Bassey makes me puke.
I always think it's funny how the themes reflect the quality of the movies with Craig's Bond. Casino Royale had the Chris Cornell one which was a completely new direction but absolutely brilliant, just like the movie. Then with Another Way To Die, just like QoS itself, you're like "what the fuck? Yeah, you've gone too far guys, dial it back a bit. Don't think I'll bother with that one again". Then Skyfall is a return to form and a nice take on classic Bond tropes, with an old-school brass band Bassey-esque theme to match, before the Sam Smith one which is sort of Bondesque but at the same time just dull, forgettable and more than a little grating- the movie in a nutshell.
@@oliverholmes-gunning5372 There are several things I like about Quantum of Solace, but, admittedly, the shortest Bond movie ever being a direct sequel to the theretofore longest Bond movie ever almost makes it seem like an epilogue to Casino Royale. Plus, it was put together during the writers strike, so that probably didn't help. The script could have used some tweeks. But I like that it still didn't have a lot of the Bond tropes, which Skyfall and Spectre seemed to feel the need to bring back.
@@VonWenk yeah, the writer's strike was a major issue. Craig himself had to finish the script in part. Personally I felt the opening scene (the car chase) was absolutely fantastic, and then the film just became a mess from there. They were trying too hard to be Jason Bourne instead of James Bond, and falling short of both. Personally as a huge Bond fan I really like it when they start putting in all the classic tropes and references (as long as it's done subtly and not gratuitously like in Die Another Day). To be honest I thought that adding in all the little tropes and returning to the more classic imagery (Bond always in a suit, the old M's office, the DB5, etc) was one of the best things about Skyfall, which for my money will always be Daniel Craig's best BOND film (as opposed to his best Bond FILM which is Casino Royale- ie, the latter is the better overall movie, the former is the better Bond movie). It was the perfect way to marry Craig's grittier, Bourne-inspired take on the role that had gone too far off the rails after QoS with the classic Connery era that true fans love. For my taste, the series' past had become a little too much focus in the last movies. Craig was more often in the Aston Martin's seat than Connery, that has really lost novelity. I'm looking forward to No Time To Die (despite the lame title ) but I'm more curious about what they'll do next.

As gorgeous and iconic as the DB5 is as an automotive and cinematic work of art, I now can't stop thinking about how Top Gear exposed it as a dud in terms of performance. (Even back in the day, Aston-Martin lied outrageously about its performance, and today it's outperformed, easily, by a Honda Accord.)
Well done; caught the good ones, plenty of the less obvious, all with plenty of respect and admiration (you were kinder to Madonna than I might've been). Still love this channel, and so far this series is among your best.

Always wondered if the downer ending of On Her Majesty's Secret Service doomed Lazenby. Did the powers that be think that he"d always be associated with that tragedy and therefore couldn't pull off the devil may care womanizer?
No, Lazenby just quit. He's talked about it openly. In a nutshell, he came down with a bad case of counter-culture and received some extraordinarily bad advice from his guru that James Bond was an archaic character who nobody would go to see anymore.
On that note I highly recommend the Lazenby documentary/biopic Becoming Bond to anyone who hasn't seen it
I have heard that Tracey's death was originally going to be in the next film but when George decided to leave the role, it was added to OHMSS instead.
Incidentally, although there are several nods to Tracey's death throughout the series, the one at the start of FYEO is the only one where she is named.
In particular, that comment by Elektra in TND could just as easily be a reference to Paris's death in the previous film.
@@RJSRdg I'm not sure how that's possible. He didn't know he wasn't going to make any more when filming on OHMSS finished- it was only after the premiere that he announced his decision. Also, Tracy's death is in the Fleming novel as well.

Guess I'm not a true fan, since I never noticed before that Bond sometimes wears a hat for that gun barrel shot, and how silly it looks.
That's not even Sean Connery in the first 3 films. The hat thing is weird because right through to the Moore film he still walks into the office wearing a hat, but you very very rarely see Bond actually wearing said hat.
Very true- it was stuntman Bob Simmons, Bond franchise regular notable for playing numerous henchmen (most notably Colonel Bouvar in Thunderball) and also the answer to my favourite devious Bond quiz question: who was the first person to play James Bond in the official Eon series?
I believe they switched to Connery in Thunderball when the scene needed reshooting due to them using a different aspect ratio or something.

Some fans give On Her Majesty's Secret Service the raspberries but I like that film. It didn't need a ton of half ass gadgets from Q or invisible cars.
I think OHMSS is actually _over_ rated among Bond fans. The music is excellent, but Lazenby isn't, and I found the romance aspect too manipulative. Edit: Just my opinion!
OHMSS has some of the best cinematography in a Bond film.

The only James Bond in films was Sean Connery. Rodger Moore defined wooden actor after John Wayne.
There are actors plenty more wooden than either Moore or Wayne, as any frequent viewer of this channel's bad movie reviews can attest.

Madonnas Song was the worst of all... until "Another way to die" came along. To think they chose this atrocity over "No good about goodbye" sung by Bassey makes me puke.
"Another Way to Die" is probably my favorite of the Daniel Craig themes.
I always think it's funny how the themes reflect the quality of the movies with Craig's Bond. Casino Royale had the Chris Cornell one which was a completely new direction but absolutely brilliant, just like the movie. Then with Another Way To Die, just like QoS itself, you're like "what the fuck? Yeah, you've gone too far guys, dial it back a bit. Don't think I'll bother with that one again". Then Skyfall is a return to form and a nice take on classic Bond tropes, with an old-school brass band Bassey-esque theme to match, before the Sam Smith one which is sort of Bondesque but at the same time just dull, forgettable and more than a little grating- the movie in a nutshell.
@@oliverholmes-gunning5372 There are several things I like about Quantum of Solace, but, admittedly, the shortest Bond movie ever being a direct sequel to the theretofore longest Bond movie ever almost makes it seem like an epilogue to Casino Royale. Plus, it was put together during the writers strike, so that probably didn't help. The script could have used some tweeks. But I like that it still didn't have a lot of the Bond tropes, which Skyfall and Spectre seemed to feel the need to bring back.
@@VonWenk yeah, the writer's strike was a major issue. Craig himself had to finish the script in part. Personally I felt the opening scene (the car chase) was absolutely fantastic, and then the film just became a mess from there. They were trying too hard to be Jason Bourne instead of James Bond, and falling short of both. Personally as a huge Bond fan I really like it when they start putting in all the classic tropes and references (as long as it's done subtly and not gratuitously like in Die Another Day). To be honest I thought that adding in all the little tropes and returning to the more classic imagery (Bond always in a suit, the old M's office, the DB5, etc) was one of the best things about Skyfall, which for my money will always be Daniel Craig's best BOND film (as opposed to his best Bond FILM which is Casino Royale- ie, the latter is the better overall movie, the former is the better Bond movie). It was the perfect way to marry Craig's grittier, Bourne-inspired take on the role that had gone too far off the rails after QoS with the classic Connery era that true fans love.
Btw I don't know if you're familiar with Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting series, but I highly recommend the one for Quantum of Solace- it's hysterically funny
