With 50 watts of power coming from the radio on the ISS, the signal,
transmitted on 145.800 MHz, can be received with a setup as simple as
a handheld amateur radio or scanner, and a rubber duck antenna.
Decoding the images can be as simple as holding the radio next to the
microphone of an iOS or Android device.
Ideally though, you would use a high gain or directional antenna, and
an audio cable connected directly between the radio and decoding
device, whether it’s a smart phone or a computer. Whatever software
you use, make sure it’s set to SSTV mode PD120, as that’s what the ISS
will be using, and if you don’t set that, you might not decode any
images at all (see hint below).
    = Recommended decoding software =

= What to expect during a pass =
SSTV mode PD120 will be used instead of PD180 which was used during
previous SSTV events this year. With PD180 it takes about 3 minutes to
send an image. With PD120 it takes about 2 minutes to send an image.
Since images transmitted with PD120 take less time to send than with
PD180, more images can be received during a single ISS pass.
An ISS pass that goes right overhead (90 degrees elevation), lasts
about 10 minutes. ISS SSTV transmit time and off time are usually
setup to provide the radio with a 50% duty cycle (only transmit half
the time so the radio doesn’t overheat). With image transmission
taking two minutes, off time will probably be two minutes as well.
Compared to previous SSTV events using PD180, this means it should be
relatively easy to receive at least two complete images in one pass,
with the possibility to receive up to three images if timing,
    conditions, and setup are ideal.
When the ISS comes into view/has line of sight with you, this is known
as Acquisition of Signal, or AOS. The ideal situation for a high
elevation 10 minute pass would be if the first image started
transmitting exactly at your AOS, and you had a directional antenna so
you could receive the signal even while the ISS was very low in the
beginning and end of the pass.
In this case you would be able to receive three images like this:
    minute, image TX/off
    0-2, complete image 1
    2-4, off
    4-6, complete image 2
    6-8, off
    8-9, complete image 3
The more common situation will be that the first image transmission
will start either before or after AOS. In this case you will only have
the opportunity to receive two complete images, but this is still
twice the amount of images that were possible with PD180. The downside
is the image quality is not as high as with PD180.
Even though you’ll have the opportunity to receive two complete
images, don’t expect to. It may take practice and it will certainly
take the right setup and conditions, to get just one complete image.
With that said, here are some tips that may help you get more images
    and/or better images.
    = Hints =
== Check Twitter for #ISS #SSTV status and images ==
For several hours after the April and July 2015 SSTV events were
scheduled to start, only a “blank signal” was transmitted. There was
no audio so no images could be decoded. During these events Twitter
users all over the world posted what they heard using hashtags #ISS
#SSTV. As soon as people started hearing the SSTV audio, they reported
    it on Twitter.
By searching for these hashtags you can stay up to date on the current
status of the transmissions, which sometimes go longer than scheduled.
Maybe more importantly, you can also see all the images people are
    getting!

That's the excitement I had on receiving my first ISS SSTV transmission.
Even now I'll tell the kids about it and I'll jokingly say, 'I'm basically a astranaught now, I could probably work for NASA', and I think it gets them just as excited about space, radio and getting their own SSTV images. It's just a shame the ISS broadcast windows are so small. Luckily, I can simulate it for them using cheap PMR radios and app on their phones.

Your first SSTV is a special event and I congratulate you. I never worked the ISS. BUT, I did receive my first images on all vacuum tube home brew gear way back in 1972. Not a computer in sight. (Computers turn wonderful challenging things into no brainers, like putting a motor in your sail boat) My receiver was a Heathkit 7 tube model with a BFO. It took actual skill to tune it perfectly to get sideband on 20 meters. 14.230MHz, classic MacDonald analog 120 line 8 second FM video on P7. If you are going to cheat and go digital, just send email. My best image was a live view of the Saint Luis arch 2000 miles away from Red Bluff, California where I lived as a kid.

    • @SpaceComms
      @SpaceComms  6 років тому +7

Yup, it's pretty awesome when you pull it down yourself. The first thing you should know is, ISS SSTV is not on all the time. These are special events for a few days at a time, a few times a year. You can actually receive them with just an internet connection using a "WebSDR," which is special radio connected to the internet. There is a good one in Farnham, UK that has antennas ideal for space comms:
      farnham-sdr.com/
You would have to connect the sound web browser into some SSTV decoding software using a virtual audio cable:
      spacecomms.wordpress.com/decoding-iss-sstv-audio-recordings-with-a-virtual-audio-cable/
But you will need to learn how the ISS SSTV works in general first:
      spacecomms.wordpress.com/iss-sstv-reception-hints/
      amsat-uk.org/beginners/iss-sstv/
To find out when the ISS SSTV will be happening follow the sources listed here:
      spacecomms.wordpress.com/when-is-the-iss-doing-sstv-next/
I also recently made a zip file of actual ISS SSTV audio I received so you can play around with decoding the real thing yourself:
      spacecomms.wordpress.com/iss-sstv-audio-recordings/
There are a lot of other ISS ham radio activities. They talk to schools regularly and I have many videos of me receiving them on this channel. They even have a "Ham TV" video transmitter so the schools can see the astronauts. There is also a "digipeater" that is on most of the time you can hear to test your ability to receive ISS ham radio signals.

2j4ez Unfortunately there is no regular schedule but there are several sources that post when it’s activated. The SSTV events are done by the Russians and they don’t announce them far in advance, sometimes only a few days, a week, maybe two weeks out if we’re lucky. There is also the issue with scheduling lower priority stuff like ham radio, it can get cancelled for higher priority stuff like science.
With that said these are the resources you can follow to be notified of an event.

You’re lucky to even get that good of a picture as far away as the iss is. There had to of been some ductwork going on because otherwise I doubt you would get a picture that close and free of video noise.

Calm down. You can download the audio recording at the link below and decode it to your heart's content. And, no there was no ducting required to do this. You can receive satellites like this all day long without ducting and I've done it dozens and dozens, maybe hundreds, of times, in many types of weather. The ISS is actually the lowest elevation of all the satellites I use.

is it possible to add more antennas to get a better signal? I thought i could have put it at the top of a van and roam around for a signal.

    • @SpaceComms
      @SpaceComms  7 років тому

TechDark Yes you can phase multiple antenna together. Look up Earth Moon Earth (EME) where hams bounce signals off the moon to communicate. Since it's so far away hams hook many antennas together in phase to get more gain (amplification). The drawback is the higher gain the narrower the beamwidth so it gets harder and harder to aim without being off target. For ISS though the signal is so strong you don't need multiple antennas in phase. Start out simple. Just get a handheld radio like a Baefong for $30 USD and listen to the ISS digipeater on 145.825 MHz. Big plans aren't necessary.

      @SpaceComms  3 роки тому

For this setup I wired a 3.5mm phono cable to the speaker inside the radio. Not sure I would do it that way again but that is what I did. The laptop was an old one that actually had a separate microphone/line in port. Most laptops these days do not have a separate audio input. They do have TRRS which combines audio in and out, I believe. If your laptop doesn't have an audio in you could get a USB audio interface like a Zoom H1. Or you could get a voice/audio recorder and copy the audio file to the computer at home. You may need an attenuator cable though so it doesn't overload the recorder and cause distortion. You can build one or buy one. spacecomms.wordpress.com/audio-cable-for-kenwood-th-d72/

It has BNC connectors on the feed points (two feed points because there are crossed VHF and UHF elements for dual band usage on cross band repeater satellites). I probably used a BNC to SO-239 adapter on the feed point and a coax cable with PL-259s on both ends to connect to the Kenwood TM-261A radio. I soldered an audio cable to the speaker inside the radio and plugged that into my laptop line/mic in. You can see this setup on another video of mine:

    • @SpaceComms

If you mean images of the earth, at the very least it's because that would require a camera hooked up 24/7 to the SSTV/ham radio equipment and that just wasn't the intention of the equipment. Everything that goes on the ISS has to be planned and approved. They already have realtime video they share on NASA TV and on Ustream. However, they have a VC-H1 Kenwood SSTV camera and Richard Garriott used it to take pics through the windows and then transmit them down just like this. MMSSTV. If you're talking about the broadcast FM receiver in some phones, no that won't work. This is 145.800 MHZ and the broadcast band is 87-108 MHz. They are both FM but broadcast FM is much wider in bandwidth. If you want you can listen using someone else's radio conneted to the internet called a WebSDR. If you want I listen on your own radio you could buy a handheld radio like the Baofeng UV-5R which is pretty inexpensive. Here is info on using a WebSDR. www.esa.int/Education/Get_pictures_from_the_ISS_and_learn_about_radio_communication

No problem with your english. This is the antenna:

Some people try to recreate it by building it themselves:
      nt1k.com/antenna-reviews-arrow-satellite-ii-vs-elk-log-periodic/
But it's probably easier to use a different design:
w6nbc.com/articles/2011-12QSTtapemeasure.pdf (make sure not to use too wide of a tape measure for the 70cm elements or else it will have a high SWR (won't tune properly).
Here is an even simpler design:
      www.wa5vjb.com/references/Cheap%20Antennas-LEOs.pdf
It would be better to build it so the 2m/70cm elements are on 90 degree opposite planes, though.

There is an MAI-75 ISS SSTV event on June 6th and 7th but each day it is limited to only a few hours and it looks like it won't be on over the US. Usually these events are done during passes that target Russia, and North America isn't covered e xcept for a few low elevation passes at best. However, sometimes after the short MAI-75 events they have longer running world wide ISS SSTV events.

    • @SpaceComms
      @SpaceComms  6 років тому +1

No, the ISS is not transmitting images 24/7. These are special events that happen a few times a year and they usually only last a few days. If you're still curious what the point is and you're not familiar with ham radio, you might think of it like crocheting sweaters. We have machines and industries that produce us sweaters and other garments faster, cheaper, and of potentially higher qualities, but it's still fun to figure out how to do it yourself. That's kind of what ham radio is about. We have the internet and cell phones and they are generally more dependable and versatile than ham radio, but it's fun to be able to figure out how radio and communication works all by yourself. Ham radio also serves as a backup to traditional comms in times of emergency like natural disasters. Finally, it provides technical people a way to learn and experiment with radio and electronics which helps build a pool of people that may potentially go on to work in industries that make the technologies you know and love!
