😀 In Tokyo’s downtown area Tsukishima, famous for its monja-yaki (savoury pancakes),
African spurred tortoise Bon-chan and its owner Mr. Mitani are going for a walk through
the area’s shopping street since 13 years.
Bon-chan is not only popular among local residents, tourists also love the adorable turtle,
with large crowds gathering every time.
For a while now, Mr. Mitani has even prepared pamphlets in English for foreign visitors.

You are right.. When I first looking to adopt a tortoise, the guy at the store asked me to take a species that can live up to 200 years old.. Then I ask him back, who's gonna take care of it when I'm gone? Living a long life sounds wonderful but it gets lonely and no one can take care of it better than the first owner.. I feel sad for Bon-chan 😢

Imagine growing up with that exquisite creature and then taking over it's care when your parents pass away. Only to then raise your children with it and let them care for him as they get older too. One of these guys can live through 3 generations of a family and it's so beautiful to think about that. The legacy of love that can survive in creatures like this is astounding and I adore our world for it.

I've had a few opportunities to handle large turtles (common snappers) in the U.S. and was surprised at how sentient and responsive they are. They dropped the tendency to snap to get their food in just a few days after having them (rescued from an excavation site) and adapted so well with living for a time with humans. Even sun bathed on the living room floor in the sunlight.

It is very common in japan for any institution to have a mascot of some sort. This identification is very strong with local institutions like train stations, police or cities/land areas.
He is most likely a mascot Mawari-san (police officer circling the streets) as he likes to patrol on his routes.
This is all just deducted from what I saw and know about japan from personal experience.
