Is putting enough money into an older Harley-Davidson worth it when you could of bought a new one?

With the older bikes , especially the reliable Evo, simple is better. Learn to work on it yourself. Repairing and upgrading is very gratifying when you do it yourself.

Both are right. The choice is in what experience you (the buyer) want. To me, it's worth it because what i want can't be bought new anymore. For me, the bikes started morphing in 2007. The changes they started implementing just don't appeal to me. I'm fine with the mechanical upgrades in the motors, it's the styling that started moving in a direction that I personally didn't care for. My first Harley 2002 XL1200C was new. I wanted to buy new when i moved up from the sporty, but i couldnt afford it then. And now the new bikes dont appeal to me as much as the older ones do. And if your patient enough, you can still find those bikes that folks bought and never rode. I bought my 03Fatboy in 2020 unmolested stock condition, with 6700mi on it. Like finding new old stock. I could make all the changes i wanted and didn't have to undo anyone else's. It still had the stock tires on it!

I can't afford the new stuff, but I could afford an older bike that I put money in overtime while still riding it. And now what I have is mine. No one has one, that I've ever seen, like it.

Picked up a 2007 Fat Boy this summer. Denim Black, Vance & Hines exhaust, cam, tune etc….. with 19,000 miles. $3,500. It had been sitting for 5 years or more.A new battery, tires, replaced the fuel pressure regulator housing, regulator, and idle control valve. So for a little over $5000 I have a really nice bike. Bags and windshield came with it.

I ride a twin cam and an EVO and I'm proud to ride them both. I really don't think that the new bikes are that enchanting. Anybody with way too much money can buy a new Harley, but us guys with older bikes put a lot more of themselves into their bike, instead of just throwing money at it.

Ever since the Evo Harleys are highly reliable, buildable and you can customize them any way you want. You don't buy Harleys to get rich you buy it to enjoy it the way you enjoy it. I used to like fast and pumped up bikes now I like stock with some pipes and intake. It's hard to explain to those that don't care for Harleys but the bike produces a certain feeling. You either get that or you don't. That's why the world makes hundreds of bikes and models. Life is short so go buy what makes you happy.

Tires, brakes, and through the years a drive belt, a starter, exhaust. If I add it all up, I probably had a total of 5K more. I don't think I wasclose to the cost of s new one, in 2004 or now.

I totally agree with the statement that it's built not bought.
Buying a Harley-Davidson is like an artist buying a blank canvas.
The only possible problem is that some artists are terrible, hahaha.
But seriously, a harley-davidson should represent the owner and the personality of the owner.
Me, I'm a 61 year old shovelhead person, and it's just what I prefer and like.
My last shovelhead I bought was this last summer, 1982 flt no fairing or tour pack 19" spoke front wheel, l Iowered, fishtail exhaust (no baffles) and 16" apes.
Runs and rides great, only had to rebuild the front brakes.
    $3,000
There's still good deals to be had.
You just need patience and a little knowledge.
I still have my first big twin, a 1978 flh, and wouldn't think about giving it up, ever.

I am seriously considering putting a new S&S motor in my 1989 FXRS. You simply could not GIVE me a new H-D. I will not ride a smooth, quiet, flat black computer on wheels. Just not going to happen. I love my old bike. It looks great, it sounds great, and it feels great. It's what a Harley Davidson used to be all about. I've owned it for 22 years, and taken care of it, but I have also ridden it. It has so many miles on it now I'm starting to get concerned about it breaking down and leaving me stranded. And while I know how, I am no longer physically capable of rebuilding the motor myself.

High sissybar, raked and extended forks, no front fender, apes, upswept fish tail exhausts, suicide foot-clutch and Jockey shifter. Those who share my passion love my bike, for those who don't get it, that's ok to. I love my bike, bikes older than mine and or ones that stand out grab my attention. Just because someone spent big money bolting on lots of tiny accessories doesn't make it stand out. Most bikes get lost in the parking lot. I picked up a 94 wide glide with only 14k on the odometer about a month ago, 5 days of ownership and about 70 miles in, she had a real loud lifter tick. Tore it down, the cam bearing was completely shot, 2 teeth on the cam gear had broken off, and the pinion gear had severe pitting and had broken 2 shards off of it as well. Who knows how it happened, but now she’s got new lifters, new ev27 cam, new pinion gear, new gaskets all over as I had to completely tear it down to find all the pieces of metal lol. That Andrews ev27 cam with the fast opening n closing ramps will eventually beat-up your tappets n cause damage. It beats up the rollers til the needle bearings fall out. I know, I ran that cam. It's not a good cam. Go with the V-thunder cams, they are designed with softer opening n closing ramps for longevity and at the same time giving you more duration for more power...

Yeah, I've been asked that question about my 97 Sportster. Here's the answer and please bear in mind that I live in Australia and the on-road price for a brand new 883 Sportster back in 2009 (when I bought my bike from a friend) was north of $15500. So, I had been looking at a new Triumph Bonneville replica, which cost $14k back then. My mate tells me he's trading in his 1997 883 Sportster and I've ridden the bike, so I know it and I ask him how much the dealer is gonna give him. He tells me; $7000. A day later, I have a Sportster with 46,000 kilometres (28500 miles) on the clock. So, my friend is a nice guy, but he's no mechanic and I have some remedial work to do, but that's okay, I like wrenching and being my first ever Harley, I like the experience. He thought that the Primary oil was fed from the engine. That was true of old Triumphs, but NOT Harley Sportsters. Thankfully, he'd tried doing his own oil change only a few weeks before I got the bike, so the Primary, Clutch and transmission needs to come apart. I was surprised and impressed that the gears were all okay, if al little yellowed. Clutch plates were passable too. The Primary chain tensioner had broken into there parts and the chain looked a little worse for wear, so a gasket, some oil, a tensioner and new primary chain set me back around $350. The bike went like a charm. Fast forward to 2012, after I'd put some serious miles on it and I decided that the 2-1 exhaust system that came with the bike wasn't really getting the chance to really shine, owing to the standard air cleaner, so I decided to get it dyno-tuned. Total cost, including an S&S Teardrop aircleaner; $1,100. That made the bike go much better, as the power output was now 56hp. A long road trip a year or two later saw the first and only time the bike let me down. The front belt sprocket splines gave way as I was passing a truck. a helpful farmer helped me to the next town and after some phone calls, I learned that Harley has though a sprocket made out of alloy would be a good protection for the splines on the 5th gear. Harley was wrong. They'd also put in a bearing that was the wrong one for that heat loading and the bearing was also replaced, along with 5th gear and a 29 tooth belt sprocket. Cost; $800 and a couple of days. Met a great guy who had the tools necessary to pull thing apart. Around six years ago I began researching big bore kits and after a year or more, decided on a 1275 kit from Hammer Performance. Importing stuff from overseas attracts customs taxes like manure attracts flies, so I had to watch the prices of packages coming from the US. Anyway, I decided that a full strip down was probably a good idea, so I did a ground-up rebuild; Wheel bearings, steering head and so on. New brake lines, master cylinder kits, fork seals, you name it. Rewired the bike from under the seat to the headlight, with a wire-tuck, relocation of coil and ignition switch and some improvements to front and rear suspension AND the Hammer kit, total cost; $3,000.
Add that all up and we get a grand total of $12,250.
I now have a 1275cc Sportster, with superior suspension to standard, which puts out phenomenal power and (more importantly) torque, that is as new as anything on the showroom floor and much better in many ways. The only comparable Harley is a Sportster S and they're priced at $24K for a new one, so I'm doin pretty well. I wouldn't want one of those anyway, so I have what I want in a bike that I built myself, for a damn good total price by my reckoning.
I understand that you CAN spend a lot of money on any bike, but you don't HAVE to.

There's a lot to be said about keeping the mods within reason I see a lot of bikes out there ruined because of higher expectations than what these bikes were made for.

I personally found older Harleys to have more character. You can do all kinds of things to make an old one better. I just picked up a 94 Road King flood bike from auction that someone spent lots of money on chrome bits. It's a tad tacky and definitely built with stuff from that time period but I like it. Tons of character that a new one can't ever have. Even if I end up spending some cash to bring it back to life I will thoroughly enjoy it.

I have my 131 Triglide that I built myself, I put about 11 grand into the build. I like it and it definitely hauls balls but it doesn’t sound like any of the older ones I’ve had. I also have a 2003 cvo screamin eagle 1550 deuce I got it with only 2400 miles on it, I had to put a few chrome parts on it because of putting like mirrors, clutch cover etc. but I absolutely love that bike it sounds fantastic and since it’s a 95 cu with cams from the factory and of course I tuned it with the new pipes I put on it. It hauls ass too so much so I don’t want to do anything else to it. I have a few more things to do to it like cam bearings and a hydraulic cam plate and then it will be golden. I’m just glad I’ve been able to work on anything that burns fuel. Hell I voided my extended Harley warranty two years after I bought the trike.

I’m not in the least interested in a new Harley Davidson but apparently some folks are or Harley wouldn’t be selling them. More power to them as they’ve capitulated to the bureaucrats in the EPA and gone a direction that doesn’t interest me in the slightest but that’s a decision that Harley management and the stockholders had the right to make. I’m truly content with what I’m riding but I’m also thankful for strong aftermarket support that gives me independence from the Motor Company’s less than stellar decisions.
