I was born in Portland, Maine in 1960. Although my family didn't live there very long, it still feels like home to me.

I was born in Maine medical center on 5/6/59. I was the third boy in four years. My parents bought a two-bedroom cape cod house in the "cheap" side of Cape Elizabeth with an acre of land in 1959 for $6,000. My father's sister and family were two homes away on Eastman Road. Back then we had the grandparents on Grant Street and Sheridan Street.

Laurie, that was a great video. Right before yours, I saw a video of a guy who was just reading off a website and had probably never been to Maine--and then yours with personal pictures and anecdotes. It was worth way more than I paid you to get your personal experience :P . Thank you for sharing. I wrote down some of what you mentioned for my family trip coming up this October.

My husband and I just got back from a fall foliage trip to New England which also included visiting Portland, Maine. We so appreciated your advice. We ate at Bite into Maine and loved the lobster rolls. I was going to upload a picture to show you but don’t know how. Thanks again!

Hi Laurie, This video was very helpful to me and my husband when planning our trip to Portland a few weeks ago. We went to Fort Williams park and the lobster rolls from the food truck, Bite Into Maine, were excellent. Your video helped us to have a great trip and I wanted to thank you for all of your wonderful, useful information. Good job!

The weather was perfect! Sunny and comfortable in June. We did the mailboat ferry boat ride to the islands. We also did the Portland Fire Engine sightseeing tour around the city on top of an old fire truck--It was so fun! I really enjoyed this tour and it was very well done. Thanks again for your advice, it really helped us plan our trip!

I live in Maine and you made an accurate review. Parking has gotten worse these days. At Two Lights, the sea gulls are aggressive and will snatch your food right out of your hands. Nevertheless, Maine is wonderful and worth a visit or two😊.

You did a GREAT video Laurie . My girlfriend and I will be there late June this year. I did live in Maine back in the mid 1960's so I'm looking forward to things that have NOT changed. My mother was born and raised in Bristol Mills ( just north of Portland) on the family farm there. We'll ferry over to Yamouth, Nova Scotia in our rental car, drive to Halifax, Monocton, PEI, a few days in Camden, Portland, then July 4th in Boston before returning here to Central Florida. We've allotted 12 days for this excursion. A new vacation area for my girlfriend to enjoy.

Our great great grandfather was awarded 150 acres in 1779 as he had served as an officer in our revolutionary war. He homesteaded the farm in Bristol Mills, Maine. The farm stayed in our family for 193 years before being sold in 1973. The house is still lived in and 1/2 of the barn is still used. I remember we use to " whitewash" the house and barn and replace " cedar shake shingles" to maintain the property. If you were born/raised in Maine it's hard to give up. We moved to central Texas.

the " old Mainers " were a unique breed of people. I'm told that you have to go inland and upstate to find them these days. Our family farm for 193 years was in Bristol Mills. As a boy it was an interesting education. We later moved out to central west Texas. Going back to Maine late June for a vacation.

The mailboat in summer is good also. You can get off and spend some hours on an island and catch the next one. One island has a great beach on the other side within a short walk.

Excellent video, Laurie! Especially the menu board shot showing the food items. I'm going there to see Maine for the 1st time in Sept 2019 as a cruise ship stop - I've always wanted to see Maine & discover the Lobster Rolls :) Bar Harbor will be our next cruise port, do you have a similar video for there, too? I hit the "Subscribe" button & will look through your past videos. Thank you for posting this, perfect timing for me! :)

yes portland has a lot of great places to eat but you can only eat so much at a time and everybody has to eat so they will always find the "best" place on their own. here's a rather short list of things to do in portland and if you plan it right you can do all of it on a 3 day weekend as long as you're of the mind that you can sleep when you're dead.
this list is not valid during pandemics or any other social catastrophes
walk the west end neighborhoods including the western prom
portland museum of art - i think friday evenings are free (used to be anyway)
walk the trail around back bay
mackworth island trail (5 minute car ride to falmouth)
walk congress street from st. john street (west end) to the end on the eastern prom
    longfellows boyhood home
    deering oaks park
take in a portland seadogs baseball game
third weekend in july is the clam festival in yarmouth, about 15 minutes by car
the next town past yarmouth is freeport if you're into shopping outlet stores. you've never had an outlet store shopping experience like freeport (that's where LL Bean is)
on the way back from yarmouth drive down rt 88 for some beautiful home sightseeing
tour cape elizabeth (the town that surrounds portland headlight)
crescent beach state park - just continue past the turn off for two lights state park
(btw, at the lobster shack, at the top of the stairs from the parking lot, looking at the lighthouse, i call it the edward hopper lighthouse, scan to the left until you see a tall rather nondescript tower...that's the 2nd lighthouse, it don't look like portland headlight that's for sure)
victoria mansion (short walk from old port)
evergreen cemetery is fun to walk around
take the ferry out to peaks island and walk around a little. like going back in time.
what are you doing watching videos on youtube? times a'wastin'!

If you want good seafood and you are in the mid coast area I would highly suggest Anglers restaurant on rt 1 in Searsport. It's a bit north of Camden next town to Belfast.
