Nice work mate! There's so much garbage online surrounding fixed gears, I was pleasantly surprised by your good tips. Very thorough tutorial. I've been riding fixed (a lot) since 1995.
I have been trying to learn to skid for years now and I finally nailed it today, thanks in large part to this video. Few things have made me this happy in a while, it's like crossing something off of my childhood bucket list! Many thanks my guy!
Believe me, I'm not particulairly strong either. I sometimes jam my knee against the frame nowadays to get more leverage! Start out on wet surface or gravel guys!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge through this video, before I thought how to stop without brakes, I thought it was a very dangerous thing when going fast without brakes
0:55 Not really. Been driving a fixed gear for about 3 years and I've never felt the need of skidding every 10 seconds. And that's commuting to work everyday, riding on alleycats and using the bike almost daily. It's all about how you drive, how focused on the enviroment you are and how to think fast if there's an upcoming and imminent fatality.
I agree you can live without skidding, however, if you really push everything during a race through the city or really just want to be quick and able to approach intersections faster because you know you can stop, I can tell you that skidding is really something you want to be able to do!
I feel it is easier to pull with the dominant foot and push with the weaker one cause u need more power to pull than to push. But it is all about personal preference. Nice Video anyway 👍 greats from germany
Thank you man! I know of a few guys who skid by blocking their knee against the bars, and only pushing on the back foot, so they don't use the pulling foot at all! But I can imagine if you learn it the other way around, it will be way easier like that!
Hi! No, I'm sure you can do it! Lean further forward to relieve rear pressure. Focus on that pulling foot mainly. And practice in wet conditions so grip is low. It is a bit scary, but im sure you can do it!
Loving the bike videos. The first one that I watched was you and your buddy building a kick ass bike from an old bike. And now this one. Really helpful. Bought a fixed gear bike that is based on HVZ frame (old USSR frame), and now trying to learn how to skid. You got a new sub! :) I hope you keep up with some bike action
Hey man! We are stoked you liked it! Skidding is lots of practice dude, you've got this 💪🏻. And don't worry, new bike projects and videos are being created as we speak! Stay tuned!
Hey man! If you look carefully, I never lock out my knees. Therefore you will always have enough space, right? Focus on that front foot pulling. And start out practising when the surface is wet!
@@Raphson haha yeah bro i think it was the standard one it came with, i heard the less teeth on the drive train and the bigger the cog makes skidding easier? is that true?
The lower that ratio the easier to skid. So a bigger rear cog or a smaller gear at your crank will both make it easier. But also you'll pedal a lot more. So it's s tradeoff. Also, leaning far forewards helps. Or using a skid enhancing device like I did in my latest vid.
Well you've got an extremely heavy ratio of 3.5. that doesnt help. Try lean forward over your bars super much, up till when you almost fall. If you do that, you've taken off almost all weight of your rear wheel, therefore making it easier to skid. Also, try to do this when the surface is wet, less friction is key to learn. Finally, focus on pulling your front foot mostly, your rear foot has to push but our feet are used to that anyways.
Both true. Check my skid device video for less wear. And you should put a lock ring on the cog! Otherwise we call it a suicide hub. Also, you can do this man! Although it sounds scary, practice on gravel or so, lowers the skidding treshold enormously. Practice makes perfect dude!
just bought my new and first fixie bike. i used to skid on my normal bike when i was a kid. though haven't been cycling for a long while. I tried to skid but nothing happens. Just stop dead. guess, i need to practice more. :p
Sounds okay to me! It's a quite light ratio so you won't hit top speeds but should be easier to skid with a lower ratio too. 17 skid patches is very nice too!
Oopsie, my bad. Dutch cities look all the same to me 😂. Haarlem is close to Zandvoort, I believe. I've been there a couple of times watching MX Races. 👍

Okay okay good tips and all that, but why do you do such risky skids infront of cars. Imagine a not so good car driver is just getting scared to kill you and pulling the steering wheel to right or left and drives into people. Would it be worth to be guilty of such accidents?
@@gustafvngas4882 Thing is that yes indeed I was showing off in this intro, but removing your brakes and just skidding actually helps you gain so much traffic awareness. You cannot just ride up to a traffic light and if it gets red you brake and done. No, you have to anticipate when you are 50 meters away that it might get red so either accelerate or start stopping. Skidding is your emergency brake, most of the work happens by just slowing your feet down gradually. Fact is, I have not fallen or crashed since I have been riding fixie (about 7 years now), and the traffic awareness has helped me a lot to understand what is going on and react in the best ways when I drive a car too.
Your legs performs the rear brake actuation as the video shows, but you can have a front brake if you want, in fact it is required in most part of the world to have a front brake on Fixie's
I’m enjoying the bike so far ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
