BUILD: Victrola Style Passive Speaker

  • A victrola style passive amplifier for a cell phone. I'm getting an 11db increase in volume from across the room, more bass and a bit of reverb, all completely unpowered.
    • Cone is made from 2 file folders joined with CA glue, and coated with truck bed liner
    • Tube is a 2" p-trap with a 2" thread adapter and a 3in flush fit cap, painted with hammer texture paint and then metallic oil-rubbeb bronze
    • Mounting bracket is 5/8" aluminum flat stock
    • The back plate and phone slot are just from some scrap 2"x10" pine I had lying around.
    P.S. I apologize for the dizzying painting sections. Lesson learned I guess. holding camera + 20x speed = obnoxious

    I was going to try this for a school project and wondered what materials and tools you needed for the whole project as my teacher needs to know. thanks

    Nice curve on the horn ! I did one with straight board, but no comparison.
    Great sound as well. Better than most commercial products as far as I can tell.
    Kudos.....Well Done

    11 db is pretty darn impressive for that, turned out very cool. I would have never thought looking at the final product it was made out of construction paper and pvc :p

    These type of speakers are excellent--and actually best--for listening to old music like early blues, doo-wop, jazz, swing, etc. Play some "St. Louis Blues" by Bessie Smith or "The Wanderer" by Dion and you'll be hearing those songs as they were originally meant to be heard.

    Really love the work and the final product, definitely snagged a new subscriber but I wouldn't be afraid to show us less of each step instead of speeding it up to such a fast pace. I found the sped up bits hard to follow. Just a thought. great videos though, keep it up!

    I have been Googling almost all day for this time of tutorial. Great job!! I wonder if bottom width of the horn is cut down, if I can use smaller pvc parts or copper plumbing parts?? I appreciate you sharing your experiment. Greetings and Merry Christmas from Central Texas~!

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  9 років тому

      Yeah you could probably bring it almost to a point and cut it down to fit any size you want. Good luck, hope you post pics or make a video :)

      Thanks. I have been playing around and think I finally got down the shape I really like. I went with 1/2" at the bottom of the template. I am working on a a new desk top prototype, but certainly will give credit to you when time. I appreciate you sharing your experiment. Merry Christmas!

    That "activator" thing always makes me smile. CA glue hardens with moisture so it is expensive water in a spray bottle. :-D

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  7 років тому +1

      lol try that some time =) while its true that "technically" ca sets with surface moisture if you spray a bead ca glue with water absolutely nothing happens (at least not for a long long time), the activator is an alkaline solution which will set it more or less instantly even when not trapped between surfaces and will set everything even the squeeze out. So its more like expensive baking soda =)

    $2 for the card paper, $20 for the plumbing, $2-$30 for the wood (depending what type) $600 for spray cans. Jokes aside looks good when all’s done.

    The cellphone goes too deeply in the tube. I can hear a crisper sound, when the cellphone is just half-way inside the tube, compared to fully inside.
    But nice build, nevertheless.

    I think you should have went with a smaller diameter pipe upto what you have, horns are conical for a reason...

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  7 років тому

      SolarizeYourLife if I did that it wouldn't be conical it would be stepped and that would only serve to reflect and bounce the sounds around. But make it anyway you like.

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  5 років тому

      David Zavracky I actually have no idea I just winged it. FWIW that’s drawn on 1/4 graph paper you might be able to screen shot it and trace it in an image editor and you would have the appropriate scale

    Great video... But please for the love of hot dogs on my forehead, don't cake on the paint like that!! Thin light coats are better than thick nasty ones

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  8 років тому +1

      Normally I would agree but I needed really thick coats for this application. One it wasn't paint, and two it needed to be built up in the seams to make to shape ridged. This isn't your average spray job.

    It's a gramophone horn not a Victrola horn. A Victrola is a specific brand of Cabinet phonographs.....Where the horn is in the cabinet..

    • @TabLeft
      @TabLeft  8 років тому

      +Ben livengood well as long as we're being needlessly pedantic about it I think Phonograph might be best... Get it phone-o-graph? See what I did there? 'Cause it's for a phone...

    • @Phono-fun
      @Phono-fun 8 років тому

      TabLeft Workshop It's not a minor detail... They're two totally different things.

    • @firebird8600
      @firebird8600 7 років тому

      Ben livengood, perhaps this was styled from a Victrola gramophone. My grandmother had a Victrola that had a very similar horn, and quite a large lid on the cabinet.

    • @Phono-fun
