    10:00 -- "Plus, ChitChat logs aren't really our problem. They have their own rules and guidelines and they should police their own network."
    It is subtle when compared to the rest of the game's blatent nature, but Dylan's response here was very much an attitude of general internet forum culture. For websites that had forums of any sort, many had a rule against bringing in outside drama. Moderators would generally only take action if, say, harassment was happening on their forum directly.

      I used to believe the same sort of thing but after running a few of my own communities I've definitely felt like there's a duty to keeping our community safe and we shouldn't be allowing harassers and abusers on our platforms regardless if it happens off-platform.

    The nostalgic punch this game gives me is amazing and kind of sad. Is it the loss of childhood? Is it the monopolization of the internet and individual styles being lost among algorithms and split-second trends? Is it the countless internet friends that are forgotten in time? Maybe it's a bit of everything

    the HAP section just makes me feel so sad. a place you're familiar with, that once had so many people and was once full of life, that you'd gotten attached to. just completely abandoned, never to be touched again. like when you join a minecraft server that you and your friends used to play on all the time, but everyone's drifted apart and it's just like a preserved piece of history. it's hard to describe how i feel playing the section, but it's done absolutely amazingly, so is the entire game

    The joy I had playing this game was incredible, with the old internet experience, and you explained everything beautifully.

    I can't wait for the Discord game in 20 years. No really, I can't wait. Discord is going to run out of money very soon and its going to be the big enshittification of 2024.
    I didn't like Hypnospace as a game (I came into this universe from Slayers X, go play it), but I can't deny its writing and worldbuilding are something else. I grew up in the Web 2.0 era having no memory of AOL trial CDs but reflecting on HSO's world, the kind of internet is depicts is very much that of myth -- like something that would be passed down by our parents. That they used to chart foreign lands, listen to shaving songs, and in general say so much with so few words. And then, like that, its mostly gone when the money dries up. All that remains are a few scraps on a hard disk somewhere. An entire library of Alexandria burned in our lifetime. Its then you realize what makes a myth, a myth: It survived the long tail of entropy.

    The internet for personal use would probably just be peer-to-peer communication. And I mean this in the sense the only thing on the internet that would extist would be: business emails, academic data hosting, military communications, etc.

    >does not rely on selfhost
    Virtually everything people now remember as "good" or as "the old internet" was selfhosted, run by people for their friends or community, and for fun, instead of profit, with next to no money or donations. As long as it's "another company" with VC funding taking over, you simply cannot expect it to end up any better than the last time. This is what I told my friends when we were transitioning from TS to Discord back in 2017, after having fled Skype some years earlier. I said that because it's not us hosting it, it's gonna end up like Skype. Turns out it's worse. Same with forums and Reddit and other stuff.
    Anyway, great video, really enjoyed watching!

    • @moochow2340

      Yeah selfhosting will always be better, but imo public platforms are way too valuable as both public spaces and just being convenient for people who aren't able to set them up. I love selfhosting stuff but I don't see it as a replacement. Thanks for commenting, glad you liked it.

    • @CarlenWhite
      @CarlenWhite Рік тому +5

      There's the fediverse stuff that seems to have a blend of either option. Mastodon, a Twitter-like experience, has its widely used instance, but you could use one more relevant to your interests without compromise. Hell, I found I can send a post from Mastodon to a Lemmy instance, a Reddit-like experience, by mentioning its community and it just works.

    • @subnumeric
      @subnumeric Рік тому +4

      @@CarlenWhite Yes! Obviously, this falls under selfhosting.
      Federation is also a very old concept in principle... the oldest in fact: Email. They just didn't call it that because is was the only way a wide-reaching system could work like that. It has it's issues (fediverse alike), but imo this is in general the way the internet needs to move to get better again.
      Not everyone needs to selfhost, I don't expect most to do so. People can just find a community they like, sort of like finding a new forum back in the day, except it federates!
      Thank you for commenting this, I don't know why I did not mention this specifically!

    The internet died when the users herded themselves onto oligopolistic platforms and mass surveillance, by public and private actors, became the norm.
    Regarding the current state of the platforms. Reddit was already awful thanks to its deranged mods and upvote system which fosters the infamous reddit groupthink, rewards repetitive and inane posts, and is being gamed by the massive bot infestation on their front page; Facebook (alongside other platforms owned by Meta) has moderation policy and automated systems thereof that are somehow worse than UA-cam comment section automoderation; Discord makes idiotic policy after idiotic policy. Twitter is a fundamentally terrible platform because of the character limit; More and more people are waking up the fact Google search doesn't work anymore - the alternative search engines aren't as popular as they should be and are still only better by comparison; I don't think UA-cam's problems need an introduction.
    On top of their individual problems all of them are increasingly embracing censorship, often in collaboration with billionaire, corporate, and state funded NGOs, and with the government directly; implementing algorithms that artificially boost certain political narratives and addictive mind-rotting content while deboosting dissenting narratives and substantive content that doesn't use mentally poisonous clickbaiting and overstimulating presentation and formatting; and the they do all this without a shred of transparency.
    There is no such thing as a community on the platform-based internet. There are some exception with small subreddits or discord servers in that goldilocks zone of size, but otherwise they died with decline of independent forums.
    Things used to be different and the alternatives to all this exist, but they don't have the marketing backing them the overvalued platforms do and also require a very basic level of tech literacy, to understand both how they work and their utility, that few people have.

    I definitely understand the aversion to hosting things yourself. It's damn tough, and usually, there's not a lot of reward for doing so. But, it's the only way we can really try to keep the things we want running. It'd be nice if companies would take better care of the platforms that they set up, but they are businesses. They're there to make money. At the end of the day, we're staying in someone else's house. The only real recourse we have when they do something that makes us unwelcome, is to make our own spaces to fit our own needs. It sucks, but it's been a constant from the early net through to today.
    All of these things have happened before. All of these things will happen again.

    A detail that a lot of people miss when talking about the old internet and the transition to a more platform based model is that the old style didn't actually go away. Website builders and self-hosting are all still around, and if anything provide more functionality now than they did back then, but just creating a website doesn't mean anyone visits it. The reality is that the majority of those old sites had ludicrously low exposure, often only being viewed by people who knew the site's creators prior to them making the site. Platforms became preferable because they simultaneously reduced the amount of effort needed to create something online, and increased the odds of your creations being seen.
    Also I find it funny that the complaint about """capitalism""" is immediately followed by the fact that Hypnospace doesn't allow commerce.

    • @IBETHISNAMEISTAKEN
      @IBETHISNAMEISTAKEN 11 місяців тому +1

      Very true. But now, the platforms have practically become an integral part of the internet, for the worse. BUT, the old style IS still definitely there and accessible, there's nothing actually STOPPING us from it. "Capitalism" isn't forcibly keeping us from it, it's just a problem of visibility and attention spans.

No desperate and egotistic or politcally driven business decisions that view a stat and be like uh huh looks good lets do it. Just once would be just wonderful.
