"I can fly, my friends"... My heart breaks every time I hear this line, so many years have passed and the emotions are still the same... Freddie forever
Before I lost my hearing I got Made In Heaven album for Christmas when I was younger. I sat down with my ma (who raised me to be a Queen fan) and we listened to it for the first time. This album felt different from all the previous ones that I'd listened to, I'll never forget hearing Mother Love and thinking it might be a nice song for me and my ma to listen to together. Freddie's verse confused me at first, but Brian's verse made me pause the song and ask my ma "why does Brian sound so sad". My ma was in pieces and couldn't answer me, it was only when I was older and watched documentaries that I finally understood her reaction.
The lyrics My Soul Is Painted Like The Wings Of Butterflies describes Freddie perfectly. All the people who met Freddie all said he was so kind, generous, loyal, loving, gentle, very shy, humorous, never one to throw his celebrity around, polite and all agreed they never knew anyone like him. Freddie was a very special person, a gift to us from God, and we fans will always love him. I personally smile when I hear his vocals he makes me happy.Great reaction
As others have said, this wasn't the last song Freddie sang. This is perhaps the beautiful ending, but the true heartbreaking final was Mother love. You know the story by now. And while I agree that this is a wonderful song, I just LOVE the last track Freddie wrote because it shows the kind of person he was: someone who was dying but looked through his window and thought "damn, this is gorgeous, I'm going to write a song about it". He loved life until the last minute.
At the recording of Innuendo album it was evident to the band members that Freddie is living on borrowed time. And we can't imagine how hard must have been for all of them. The press was haunting Freddie mercilessly because it was speculated that he was ill. But Freddie was strong enough to keep on singing untill he could no more ...😢 Brian, Roger and John closed ranks and protected Freddie for all costs. Brian said that it was very hard because they couldn't tell anyone but it was also the closest time and the most precious moments they all 4 had together in a studio. Their recording studio in Montreux, Switzerland, became their safe heaven, the protecting blanket wrapped arround Freddie. Roger said that in those times he openly lied to anyone who asked if Freddie was sick. That shows the immense bond, loyalty and love Queen members had among themselves for 21+ years. They had their differences, they would bicker about music a lot but when times got tough, they stayed together like 4 musketeers, all for one and one for all. And that, along with their astonishing music, is what makes them even greater. 👑 Real royalty. Thanks Amy& Vlad for that incredible 👑 50 journey and hoping for a new one. Their first 4 albums and their last one, Made In Heaven (completed and released years after Freddie's passing) are a journey worth taking next. Freddie's Barcelona album with Montserrat Caballe is another 💎 which will take your breath away....
"When the band recorded the song in 1990, Mercury's condition had deteriorated to the point that May had concerns as to whether he was physically capable of singing it. May recalls; "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And he went, 'I'll fucking do it, darling' - vodka down - and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal"
One of the most powerful songs ever written lyrically but also musically. A song about facing death with a grinn. Most people see our outward appearance and they can make assumptions and judgments but in the long run our internal image of ourselves will alwayd be the most important thing that we must cultivate. Like somebody said, we must be the hero of the movie playing in our minds. No gods, no devils and no angels can ever take or should ever take the reigns away of our hands. We come into life alone and we depart alone. To learn to be comfortable in our metaphysical aloneness, to be strong and not to be afraid that someday we'll be gone but right now we're here. Live on.
IMO this is the best song ever written. Amazing melodies and harmonic structures, unbeatable vocal and guitar performances, operatic style string (synth) layers, and lyrics that have shaken me and pulled tears from my eyes for 23 years and counting. There’s masterful tone painting, moreover, this is an opera, in all its orchestral splendor. . It’s not just great. It’s quite literally the best song ever written.
Amy, it's amazing that you "saw" BUTTERFLIES flying while listening to Brian's 🎸 and the line "my soul is painted like the wings of butterflies" is utterly beautiful and sad ... and Brian was right: THAT'S FREDDIE. 🥰 But there is also a story of a CLOWN you mentioned. It's the sad clown with a smile expression painted on his face. 💔 Brian explained: "We didn’t discuss what the meaning of the song was, but it was of course evident in the background that it was an attempt to give a voice to the feelings that Freddie’s valiant fight against AIDS created in all of us, and even in Freddie. He was too low in energy to create it himself. But I had one unforgettable special afternoon working together with him on solidifying the lyrics of the first verse of this embryonic song ABOUT A CLOWN WHOSE MAKE-UP HID HIS PAIN, before he slid out to attend another treatment. That gave me enough lyrical material to later expand into the eventual two verses.”
The Show Must Go On is the song that totally made me fall for Queen. Such an epic and majestic song, it has some of Freddie’s most impressive vocals despite his swiftly deteriorating health 😭
It's probably my favorite. I got into them from the Highlander movies and was blown away by the versatility and showmanship. Being an older guy now, many people have that "really?" response when you say you are a big Queen fan and the response is always "of course."
If you listen to this song, and look at a picture of Freddie during the time he recorded this song, ... it is like his body had almost wasted away except for his voice. Every time I hear this song, I marvel at the beauty, energy, power and urgency of this last performance. It is almost uncanny in its beauty to me and, at the same time, it is very comforting in a way. ♾
Thank you for your genuine and informative reactions and I hope you will listen to "Mother Love" at some point. Freddie's voice is incredible and it was his last recording. He could not complete it and Brian sings the last verse.
Congratulation on the completion of the Queen 50 series. It has been a great series with a good diverse selection of songs, ending very appropriately with this one. I have loved your insights, enjoyment and growing appreciation of Queen throughout the series. It has been a big success, and I know you also still plan on doing more Queen songs in the future, particularly now that Amy has become a fan herself. Great job Amy & Vlad!
I remember the first time I listened to the album and this song came up. It was in 1991, my father was also terminally ill, I was just 14 and I wondered what was going on there. I knew nothing about the speculation about Freddie's health at the time, but I felt something must have been up for them to end an album with this number. It felt as if they were saying goodbye. It all felt so fitting in my life at the time. 2 months later my father died and another 6 months later Freddie died and it all fell into place.
I had a similar experience but the song was Days of our Lives. My grandmother heard it xmas 1990 when I received the album. She loved the song. We knew she was seriously ill. She died two months after Freddie. Days has been played at every family funeral since then.
ANOTHER QUEEN 50? Many warm Thanks for the Queen 50 Series. I have listened to them all. Realising with your help some thing I had not noticed before. Of course I don’t agree with everything, but such is life for someone being a Queen fan since 1973. There were surely many of the Queen songs in it that showed their versatility. Brian May once said that he would like to be remembered for song it would be for “Long Away”, “White Queen(As It Began)” and “Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together). None of them were in the “Queen 50 Series” though.... That lead me to think if there might be room for a “Queen 50 Series II”? Which Queen songs could be in that one? I came up with a list from some of Queen’s remaining songs. From “Queen” (or perhaps we can now also call it “Queen I” if we consider the 2024 version): "Doing All Right" "Great King Rat" "My Fairy King" "Liar" "The Night Comes Down" "Jesus" From “Queen II” the following songs: "Procession" "Father to Son" "White Queen (As It Began)" "Some Day One Day" "Ogre Battle" "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" "The March of the Black Queen" From “Sheer Heart Attack” these: "Brighton Rock" "Flick of the Wrist" "Stone Cold Crazy" "Misfire" "Bring Back That Leroy Brown" From “A Night At the Opera the following: "'39" "The Prophet's Song" "Good Company" From “A Day At the Races” these: "Long Away" "You and I" "Drowse" "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)" From “New Of the World” this one: "It's Late" From “Jazz” these songs: "Dead on Time" "In Only Seven Days" "Dreamer's Ball" "Leaving Home Ain't Easy" From “The Game” this one: "Dragon Attack" From “Flash Gordon” these: "Flash's Theme" "Battle Theme" From “Hot Space”: "Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)" "Cool Cat" From “The Works”: "Keep Passing the Open Windows" "Is This the World We Created...?" From “A Kind of Magic” these: "One Year of Love" "Princes of the Universe" From “The Miracle” these: "Rain Must Fall" "Scandal" "Was It All Worth It" From “Innuendo” these: "Headlong" "Don't Try So Hard" "Ride the Wild Wind" From “Made In Heaven” these: "Mother Love" "Heaven for Everyone" "A Winter's Tale" In addition these two. One tribute song for Freddie and one tribute song for Brian. “No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young)” May wrote it for Mercury “Soul Brother” Mercury wrote it for May If I have calculated correctly these songs make an even 50 too…. Enjoy! Many warm regards Hans
As a long time major Queen fan this song still brings tears to my eyes. Amy you would love so many Queen songs LIVE ☺️🌷 Not very many bands are fantastic Live. So much can be done to music in the studio. Queen is unique among other bands because each member was a most excellent musician and composer.
Well said friend. Each member of the band was a brilliant musician and songwriter, possessed of the highest degree of technical skill and intuition with their instrument of choice-And you can tell that they wrote from their instrument. A Roger Taylor track in particular, you feel it from the drums. His songs were born on a drumbeat. And Deacky’s underrated base line and ace in the hole songwriting-As for Brian and Freddie? We’d need whole chapters on what they did and could do.
I really love the key changes in the 2nd verse. Going up a step is always powerful but coming back down to get the chorus back in b minor almost goes unnoticed
Such a beautiful and epic song, I always end up in tears or nearly in tears when listening to it. It's so packed with emotion and it describes Freddie's battle in an impactful way. It's one of my favorite Queen songs, definitely.
I was in high school in France, when this song came out and... Freddie went away. It was a HUGE hit... I always have tears when I listen to it, knowing that Freddie just had a shot a Vodka and sang it "straight right" just after that, in the condition he was is just incredible. And you had it on point noticing that "The Show Must Go On" starting with "Empty Spaces" can't be something else than a hint a The Wall.
There is another hint at The, Wall at the end of the guitar solo in "Don't Try So Hard" (before "Oh! It's a beautiful world" chorus): compare it to the similar guitar phrase in "Hey You" (before "But it was only a fantasy" verse). And of course that "Innuendo" promo video -with faceless dolls in the audience of the theatre.
A great song which Freddie is said to have sung despite being so ill. You can hear the love that Brian had for Freddie. You can hear the love Roger and John had for Freddie who was as magical as a butterfly. Thanks So Much for deep diving one of the greatest rock groups that has ever existed. Excellent job guys!
That high note he somehow reaches up to on the final chorus (about 9.10 in this video) always makes the hairs on my back stand up. He f*cking did it indeed! Wonderful video Amy!
What an end to a great series which I very much enjoyed following. Thank you Amy, for your interesting reactions to one of the greatest band ever. And to end it with this song!! I know it's not the last song by Queen or the last song Freddie sung or wrote but to me it is the very last song by Queen. Every time I hear it there is a tear in my eye. The whole album Innuendo builds up to this and that is why it's one of Queens best album. Brian, Roger and John put their egos aside and helped Freddie making it through the whole process. Because of the context The show must go on is one of the greatest songs ever.
Heartbreaking mix where Freddie sounds alone in his struggle. No call is given a real response and even the bass is evasively jumping octaves. Then, they present the most beautiful bridge I ever heard in rock music.
I don't think I could have done this without becoming emotional. This is the perfect final song for Queen. As you said, you tried to evaluate it as a piece of music on its own, but it is hard to ignore the context, while noting that even in ignoring the context it is a powerful piece of music. And while it is a sad story, in a way this is a beautiful story, because as you noted they had the opportunity to prepare and come to terms with the situation, unlike other bands that suddenly lost key unreplaceable members. It is beautiful that Freddie and his brothers in music were able to come together for this final project in such a powerful way, and in typical Queen fashion they leave us with a hopeful message, here on what the spirit of creative individuals are able to achieve together. As you said here and have said before, they embrace life. I liked framing this in the context of a theatrical score or play, since that is the way I often view life itself, where the real world tragedies, dramas and comedies around us seem to exceed Shakespeare at times. Interesting Pink Floyd Wall references. I loved that you got the butterfly imagery from Brian's guitar before you heard the lyric and story behind it. Just shows how well Brian was able to express that idea, to have someone with your musical discernment hear it and see that image. Great reaction and closing words, both for this song and for your Queen 50 series.
I was eleven when Queen had their first serious airplay in The Netherlands with 'Killer Queen'. Young as I was, it hit me between the eyes and Queen became part of the fabric of my life until Freddie passed away. Up until this day I can't listen to this song without getting watery eyes through the firs three quarters of the song, again feeling the loss of this great vocalist and brilliant performer. By the time of the finale this always changes into a kind of uplifting mood,; feeling glad and thankful for the wonderful times I've had listening to their music. Thank you for going on this journey.
Thank you for your beautiful analysis of Queen I'm afraid Vlaad may have misinformed you; The Show Must Go On isn't the final song Freddie sang. He continually recorded until May 1991, the last track being Mother Love The last lines he sang were craving for peace and love from his mother "before I die"😢
I remember not loving The Miracle album, probably unfairly. But then Freddie got ill and the Innuendo album came out - first the song Innuendo song blew me away. Such a great last album from Queen. I found The Show Must Go On so emotional. Great work by Brian and Freddie’s vocals were sublime.
With all the great songs from their first album thru to this one, THIS song is the one that hits me the hardest. To think he was SO SICK that he was having to hold himself up to sing, rips my heart out. Most amazing vocals!
You might like the song “Old Friends.” From one of Roger Taylor’s solo albums-It’s a poignant and introspective reflection on Roger and Freddie’s friendship. These men were like brothers. The whole band.
I know it's been said before but it would be fantastic if you could organise a chat with Brian May. I would love hear you talk with him. I'm sure he would do it.
Life has to carry out its mourning and as such, and avoiding the total madness of not ending all mourning, life has to continue and what is life if not the pursuit of the joy of living, which is the only way to feel good while we are alive. How many times in a clown's life has the public forced him to feel the truth of a fake smile. Uma das melhores músicas jamais feitas.
27:28 🤔 Not sure what Vlad means by 'no'. Before Freddie passed they recorded 4 more songs as Queen (lost opportunity, you don't fool me, a Winters Tale and mother love). After he passed they recorded one more song as queen (no-one but you). After two or three appearances as Queen, they adopted the identity of Queen+ which was Brian and Roger and whoever sang with them. They were still touring like this last year with Adam Lambert as their singer.
Thank you for such a beatutifull journey, thanks for sharing with all of us. I was waiting for this days and it worth it. ❤ This make drop a tear in my face.
What a beautiful journey it was. As a lifelong Queen fan, it was a pleasure reliving through you, the experience of hearing these gems for the first time. I could see how you came to respect the band and it's members. Thank you for this. And also thanks to Roger, Brian, John e Freddie for producing, in my opinion, the best songs in pop/rock history.
Congratulations on finishing your Queen learning experience! Don’t worry, you aren’t the first classical artist who fell in love with Freddy/Queen…and probably not the last either! Love to you and your family! ❤
Finally! The review I was waiting and waiting since this channel begins! My hype was growing and growing, for Amy to finally hear and analize one of my favorites ever. And yes, the result was what I was expecting, just magic. 🥰
So many awesome songs covered. So many more yet to be discovered. I honestly think there's enough worthy tracks to justify another 50! Kinda sad that only 1 track from Made in Heaven was featured (in the previous vid), but I hope Queen will be revisited sometime in the future. A Winter's Tale, and Mother Love are definitely both tracks that are worth a listen - especially considering the latter was the last track Freddie recorded vocals for, though Brian ultimately had to fill in on the final verse. No One But You is also a worthy mention, released as a standalone single in 1997, and was the last song to be recorded and released as just 'Queen'.
Queen continued to record and tour first with Paul Rogers and then Adam Lambert. For me, though, they continue in tribute to Freddie rather than have ambition to expand the catalogue or surpass what has already been done. In many ways, Queen are as big as they have ever been…seemingly evergreen and enduring through passing fads and discovered anew by subsequent generations. Queen ain’t going anywhere.
Indeed. Queen was done the moment Freddie died. John was the only one ready to face this and move on. Brian and Roger failed to do so. Which is particularly sad considering that Brian still had lots to say musically, as evidenced by his two albums. I would have loved it if he had continued to record as a solo artist instead of trying to keep Queen alive.
What about Mother Love and 'A Winters Tale' Freddie wrote and sang Winters tale . I think that was the very last although some people Say Mother Love, but that was co written by May and Mercury and Brian had to finish singing it, because Freddie got to the last verse and said he would come back to it , but never did.
Agree. Mother Love was probably the last vocal "Mama please, let me back inside'😢 I saw the Queen show at the Munich planetarium and cried real tears for the 1st time in years
The “butterflies “ guitar section Amy talks about does not strike me in that way. Butterflies have a lightness and sweetness .Yes, the guitar is building a crescendo but it has always seemed to me like a screaming howl of pain as Brian confronts the magnitude of the tragedy unfolding for Freddie and the band. You can hear the desperation and grief. It breaks my heart every time. 💔
Off the top of my head: My Fairy King, Liar, White Queen [As it Began] ( both studio and live versions!), The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke & Nevermore (really need to be listened to together), The Prophet's Song, Teo Toriatte, Dreamer's Ball....there are some absolute gems still to discover, so hopefully her Queen journey isn't over just yet!
I love this song. And I’ll miss your reactions to Queen. I learned a lot, even though loving their songs all along. I still feel Freddie was the best ever, but I’ve gained even more of an appreciation through understanding from your views on those close details of each instruments contributions. But RIP Freddie, once again, always missed, loved forever. ❤❤❤
15:50 I love the play on words here, with "we know the score" meaning " we know what's really happening" and also "we've learned the musical score for the show"
Just beautiful, absolutely beautiful!!...I recommended you this master piece two weeks ago and.. Here it is. Thank you very much. VIVA QUEEN, VIVA FREDDIE MERCURY
Love this channel! As a lover of many many genres of music, hearing your impressions and seeing your delight and/or dismay is so refreshing and beautiful. I have seen many of your videos and have some suggestions for you that may be considered "off the beaten path" for many, as most of your listenings have been fairly mainstream. I would love to see you listen to the following artists in no particular order: Joy Division (song suggestion: "Atmosphere") Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (song: "La Femme Accident"/"Joan of Arc"/"Souvenir") The Butthole Surfers (song suggestion: "Helicopter") Siouxsie and the Banshees (song suggestion "Hong Kong Garden") Bauhaus (song suggestion: "God in an Alcove") Duran Duran (song suggestion: "Planet Earth") I could literally suggest Artists all day long that I adore, but I think this handful are songs I think would be appreciated by you.
This song and Who Wants to Live Forever, I cannot listen to them without tears. And as far as context, even though it was written by Brian on commission for the soundtrack for the Highlander movie, Freddie -- as always -- made the song his own. And even though he hadn't been formally diagnosed yet, you can't help but think it was on his mind as he sang. Thank you so much for the Queen 50! It was a worthy undertaking and very much appreciated.
This music it was something at the time it was released. But it mean something else, something more, something different nowadays. The music it doesn't remain the same. None of them. That's what is beautiful, magic.
Amazing reaction; you picked up o n every single nuance. Thank you for this series, it's given me a new insight and understanding to the songs and the music I have listened to most of my life. But Vlad's mistaken when he thinks Queen didn't continue after Freddie's passing and Deacy's leaving; they did, although the focus shifted to curating and finding new outlets for their music. They also took to the road again, with different vocalists; and even though at first I was hesitant, I have now been going to almost as many Queen + Adam Lambert concerts as I had to Queen (with Fred and John) gigs previously, and I have to say, the quality is still there.
I was (and still am) a huge Queen fan, especially in the late 80s/early 90s, when the band was still recording. When "Innuendo" came out, I loved it right away. Of course, there was no social media and no one really talked about Freddie's condition in the USA. Queen were not very popular in America at that time - this was before "Wayne's World" and the subsequent Queen resurgence of the early 90's. It honestly didn't occur to me that Freddie might be dying, even when listening to this song for the first time in 1991. He still sounded so vital, so powerful, especially on this song. Then the news anchor mentions Freddie's death on the evening news that November day, and I was crushed. No...not Freddie. Please take literally anyone else in music but him. It felt like I was losing a close friend. Thanks for the incredible journey and brilliant analyses, Amy. Looking forward to many more.
I love this song and was really hoping it would be the finale of the Queen 50. Thanks for a great journey. I hope Queen appears again on your channel, they are just the best band ever in my opinion.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. It really grabs your heart and won't let go. Freddie left it all on this recording, like he might as well go all out knowing this was likely his last album. He did, it was recorded, and it stands as a forever testimony of his pain and joy, his mortality and his immortality. It is a perfect, beautiful, amazing piece of art that never ceases to move me. And yeah Brian and Roger still tour Queens songs, but it is always billed as Queen with "Insert singer here." Roger Tayor's son Rufus "tiger" Taylor is the current drummer for the band The Darkness, which I love and you can tell is heavily influenced by Queen and AC/DC. If you ever try them you should check out a song called Last of Our Kind.
Congratulations on this series! This is a pretty appropriate song to end on, although if you're covering any further Queen songs, I'd recommend A Winter's Tale, which is (along with Mother Love) Freddie's actual last songs, and No One But You, the Queen song that Queen made without (and for) Freddie.
This must be your best reaction ever, I really enjoyed this, both your analyses and your facial expressions throughout the song, especially under Brian May’s guitar solo 😊 😊
In the video No one but you, in the final shot a moth flies into a beam of light and flies away. Amy, thank you so much for the fascinating journey into the universe of Queen's music. Thanks to your analysis, I hear the different shades that Queen's music is so rich in
... a moth flies from the dark, circles the glass of champagne (as it was always put on the piano at all 👑 gigs for Freddie to toast the audience) and then flies up to the dark again ... I get shivers down my spine remembering that from the video and hearing Brian talking about it (he spotted that during the shoot and when they rewind the footage, the crew were in AVE) ... Brian said: "You have to decide for yourself what that was and what it means ..." but we all know, don't we ... ✨
You should really check out and listen to the isolated stems/tracks for this song's instruments. They're all great, my favorite being the guitar and vocal tracks. Great reaction as always and I hope we get another 50 songs in the future!
To me this song is about the nuances, the changes and the variations in life with the determination to keep going through adversity to the beauty that lies beyond. Yes its about Freddie but its also about everyone of us, the trials and tribulations of life that bring colour to our personalities from the dark forboding events we overcome.
Amy, you simply must do A Winter’s Tale and Mother Love from the final Queen album, “Made In Heaven.” A Winter’s Tale never fails to bring feelings of Christmas, the warm feelings that only rear themselves when one’s got a hot cocoa, a warm fire, gazing out into the snowy winterscape-Everyone you love under the same roof. It’s a testament to how positive Freddie’s outlook was, that he could feel such joy and write such music, even at death’s door. And Mother Love-Is a glimpse at a man who is tired of living, but doesn’t want to die-Haunting, those last lyrics as they’re sung, and by the singer… You don’t have to react to them, but you should listen to them, hear them. You have a relationship with Queen now.
There seems to be a lot of references to the song My Fairy King in this song "someone has drained the color from my wings and broken my Fairy circle ring " dragons flying like sparrows through the air,and "I can not run I can not hide". Looking back from their journey together
There is a wonderful song Freddie wrote… My Fairy King … in the last words of the song Freddie wrote Someone, someone has drained the colour from my wings Broken my fairy circle ring and shamed the king in all his pride Changed the winds and wronged the tides Mother Mercury Look what they’ve done to me I cannot run, I cannot hide La la la la and on 😔 I will always miss Freddie and wonder what else he would have written.
"My Fairy King" is such an important catalyst song in Queen discography. It transformed Farrokh Bulsara into Freddie Mercury. It also lead Freddie to create first "March of the Black Queen" and then later "Bohemian Rhapsody".
During their 86 show at Wembley, Mercury said on stage that "we're going to stay together until we fucking well die", which was prophetic and literally true as they moved into the studio so that they could record one more album, anything they could put in front of him, whenever he was phiscally capable.
"I can fly, my friends"... My heart breaks every time I hear this line, so many years have passed and the emotions are still the same... Freddie forever
By the way the last song Freddie recorded was "Mother Love" and the last he composed was "A Winter's Tale"
Which are both, in their own way, absolute GEMS Amy has to listen to one day! Literally two of my very favorite Queen pieces.
It breaks my heart every time I hear Mother Love, and Brian sings the last bit.
Mother Love is so painful.
Mother Love is absolutely heartbreaking. Freddie could not finish the last verse so Brian sang it instead. Makes me cry every time.
Now that you've finished the Queen 50 series you MUST watch/react to the full 20 minute set of Queen at Live Aid 1985
That’s an excellent idea
I can't believe you haven't reacted to Live Aid yet!! Please do, you'll love it!
Please 🙏
And also some songs from Montreal 81
and please do the encore, no one ever does it
The fact that he could conjure that strength in His voice despite being so ill Is such a testament of His Will to live that it always breaks my heart
💔💔💔💔
After all these years, I'm still teary whenever listening to this song....
You are not the only one.
No man is dead while his name is still spoken. - Freddie will never die, his and Queens music is timeless, flowing through the generations.
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. Queen is immortal.
❤
So true 🌷
As others have said, this wasn't the last song Freddie sang. This is perhaps the beautiful ending, but the true heartbreaking final was Mother love. You know the story by now. And while I agree that this is a wonderful song, I just LOVE the last track Freddie wrote because it shows the kind of person he was: someone who was dying but looked through his window and thought "damn, this is gorgeous, I'm going to write a song about it". He loved life until the last minute.
That’s exactly how I felt when I first heard “A Winter’s Tale.”
Deacon bass in the intro is just brilliant
At the recording of Innuendo album it was evident to the band members that Freddie is living on borrowed time. And we can't imagine how hard must have been for all of them.
The press was haunting Freddie mercilessly because it was speculated that he was ill. But Freddie was strong enough to keep on singing untill he could no more ...😢
Brian, Roger and John closed ranks and protected Freddie for all costs.
Thank you Amy for making that journey so wonderful with your fantastic reactions and knowledge xx
“I’ll soon be turning round the corner” always hits me right in the tear gland.
Amy, it's amazing that you "saw" BUTTERFLIES flying while listening to Brian's 🎸 and the line "my soul is painted like the wings of butterflies" is utterly beautiful and sad ...
and Brian was right:
THAT'S FREDDIE. 🥰
But there is also a story of a CLOWN you mentioned. It's the sad clown with a smile expression painted on his face. 💔 Brian explained:
"We didn’t discuss what the meaning of the song was, but it was of course evident in the background that it was an attempt to give a voice to the feelings that Freddie’s valiant fight against AIDS created in all of us, and even in Freddie.
Queen was not just another great band, they were musicians at their best. And this theme was Freddie's "Lacrimosa". So powerful!
❤
From “Queen” (or perhaps we can now also call it “Queen I” if we consider the 2024 version):
"Doing All Right"
"Great King Rat"
"My Fairy King"
"Liar"
"The Night Comes Down"
"Jesus"
From “Queen II” the following songs:
"Procession"
"Father to Son"
"White Queen (As It Began)"
"Some Day One Day"
"Ogre Battle"
"The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke"
"The March of the Black Queen"
From “Sheer Heart Attack” these:
"Brighton Rock"
"Flick of the Wrist"
"Stone Cold Crazy"
"Misfire"
"Bring Back That Leroy Brown"
From “A Night At the Opera the following:
"'39"
"The Prophet's Song"
"Good Company"
From “A Day At the Races” these:
"Long Away"
"You and I"
"Drowse"
"Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)"
From “New Of the World” this one:
"It's Late"
From “Jazz” these songs:
"Dead on Time"
"In Only Seven Days"
"Dreamer's Ball"
"Leaving Home Ain't Easy"
From “The Game” this one:
"Dragon Attack"
From “Flash Gordon” these:
"Flash's Theme"
"Battle Theme"
From “Hot Space”:
"Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)"
"Cool Cat"
From “The Works”:
"Keep Passing the Open Windows"
"Is This the World We Created...?"
From “A Kind of Magic” these:
"One Year of Love"
"Princes of the Universe"
From “The Miracle” these:
"Rain Must Fall"
"Scandal"
"Was It All Worth It"
From “Innuendo” these:
"Headlong"
"Don't Try So Hard"
"Ride the Wild Wind"
From “Made In Heaven” these:
"Mother Love"
"Heaven for Everyone"
"A Winter's Tale"
In addition these two. One tribute song for Freddie and one tribute song for Brian.
“No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young)” May wrote it for Mercury
“Soul Brother” Mercury wrote it for May
If I have calculated correctly these songs make an even 50 too….
Enjoy!
Many warm regards
Hans
I love this song.
I really love the key changes in the 2nd verse. Going up a step is always powerful but coming back down to get the chorus back in b minor almost goes unnoticed
I’ve always enjoyed the chord changes that bring it back down again, for the second chorus, as you say, in a way that you hardly notice.
And that E diminished as the seventh of the fourth coming in the bridge in C is quite nice.
Such a beautiful and epic song, I always end up in tears or nearly in tears when listening to it. It's so packed with emotion and it describes Freddie's battle in an impactful way. It's one of my favorite Queen songs, definitely.
It’s amazing that Queen could still create such high quality songs at the end of their career. This is top 10 of greatest Queen songs .
This entire comment is just voila 🤌! So well put.
@@Panda_man.. Thanks, I had good material to work with since a lot of it was reflecting on what Amy said.
Hang on people..are you forgetting Made in Heaven? A brilliant allbum that was basically built around Freddie's final vocals. ❤
Please do one more of these with Queen songs. I love these videos
Some people cover this, but probably in a lower a key. But none with the attack that Freddie has with such range and power... hits hard.
Queen DID go on . John Deacon retired but Brian and Roger are still performing all these wonderful songs today with Adam Lambert as Queen+.
Thank you for your beautiful analysis of Queen
I'm afraid Vlaad may have misinformed you; The Show Must Go On isn't the final song Freddie sang. He continually recorded until May 1991, the last track being Mother Love
The last lines he sang were craving for peace and love from his mother "before I die"😢
👍👍
This song breaks my heart every time.
I've always felt the end (go on, go on) is also a nod to the end of a vinyl record. The skipping repeat.
Thanks for this series reaction. We love u Amy.❤
This was a beautiful reaction to this beautiful song ❤❤❤
With all the great songs from their first album thru to this one, THIS song is the one that hits me the hardest. To think he was SO SICK that he was having to hold himself up to sing, rips my heart out. Most amazing vocals!
If you look at the statue that was placed in his honour, you will see the words - Lover Of Life Singer Of Songs and that sums Freddie up perfectly
Because those are Freddie's words darling~🪷
@@muzicaempathica6479 Brian wrote that, dear ... But yes, this is Freddie ❤
You might like the song “Old Friends.” From one of Roger Taylor’s solo albums-It’s a poignant and introspective reflection on Roger and Freddie’s friendship.
These men were like brothers. The whole band.
Thanks you Amy. That was great.💜
I really hope you'll get to meet up with Brian May for an interview
I know it's been said before but it would be fantastic if you could organise a chat with Brian May. I would love hear you talk with him. I'm sure he would do it.
OH YES AMY❤
I bet Bri would be utterly enchanted by you❣️🪷
Wow that is a great idea and I would love to see that 🤘🤘🤘
This is my favorite Queen song. The final "show must go on" still gives me chills.
Thank Amy. A great dramatic song - "All the world's a stage and we are merely players"... and Queen were the very, very best of players!
Life is sometimes joyful, but suffering is also inevitable. Show does must go on despite any setback
Agree. Mother Love was probably the last vocal
"Mama please, let me back inside'😢
I saw the Queen show at the Munich planetarium and cried real tears for the 1st time in years
Amazing that you dont end with those 2. It took me years to make it through Mother Love.
Came here to say from bad friends podcast ❤😊
The “butterflies “ guitar section Amy talks about does not strike me in that way. Butterflies have a lightness and sweetness .Yes, the guitar is building a crescendo but it has always seemed to me like a screaming howl of pain as Brian confronts the magnitude of the tragedy unfolding for Freddie and the band. You can hear the desperation and grief. It breaks my heart every time. 💔
March of the Black Queen and Brighton Rock are 2 glaring omissions on your Queen education.
@@andrewsheppard1940She has said it isn't over.
This song Is so heartbreakingly beautiful and tragic.
Freddie moved like a butterfly, but stung like a bumblebee
15:50 I love the play on words here, with "we know the score" meaning " we know what's really happening" and also "we've learned the musical score for the show"
Just beautiful, absolutely beautiful!!...I recommended you this master piece two weeks ago and.. Here it is. Thank you very much. VIVA QUEEN, VIVA FREDDIE MERCURY
A good reading after the song... always an emotional song to me. Ty for the series, I've enjoyed it all.
I would love to see you listen to the following artists in no particular order:
Joy Division (song suggestion: "Atmosphere")
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (song: "La Femme Accident"/"Joan of Arc"/"Souvenir")
The Butthole Surfers (song suggestion: "Helicopter")
Siouxsie and the Banshees (song suggestion "Hong Kong Garden")
Bauhaus (song suggestion: "God in an Alcove")
Duran Duran (song suggestion: "Planet Earth")
I could literally suggest Artists all day long that I adore, but I think this handful are songs I think would be appreciated by you.
A great video , in a a wonderful series of great videos. Thank you Amy
Time for list of other queen songs for her to think about reviewing
March of the black queen
And green day crowd. Are my 2
Gracias Amy, un saludo grande desde Argentina!!
Wishing Freddie lived longer is fine, wishing another artist died instead isn't, even as a matter of speech. Get a grip.
The video adds to this a lot. That sound, from that person. Astounding.
Congratulations Amy on finishing the queen 50 Series🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you, Amy; you’ve made my world a much better place, by your being. jmb
No puedes dejar de reaccionar a grandes temas de Queen que aún quedan por disfrutar! debes seguir!!!! No abandones acá! Por favor.
@@iris67si exactly
You should really check out and listen to the isolated stems/tracks for this song's instruments. They're all great, my favorite being the guitar and vocal tracks. Great reaction as always and I hope we get another 50 songs in the future!
Thank you for a magnificent series. It's been May-estic!
To me this song is about the nuances, the changes and the variations in life with the determination to keep going through adversity to the beauty that lies beyond.
Yes its about Freddie but its also about everyone of us, the trials and tribulations of life that bring colour to our personalities from the dark forboding events we overcome.
Amy, you simply must do A Winter’s Tale and Mother Love from the final Queen album, “Made In Heaven.”
A Winter’s Tale never fails to bring feelings of Christmas, the warm feelings that only rear themselves when one’s got a hot cocoa, a warm fire, gazing out into the snowy winterscape-Everyone you love under the same roof. It’s a testament to how positive Freddie’s outlook was, that he could feel such joy and write such music, even at death’s door.
And Mother Love-Is a glimpse at a man who is tired of living, but doesn’t want to die-Haunting, those last lyrics as they’re sung, and by the singer…
You don’t have to react to them, but you should listen to them, hear them.
@@suvilaitinen2731So true ❤️
What a nice reaction and analysis O congratulate me thank for this. Amazing 🤘🤘🥲🥲
Nice reaction, as ever.I used to put this on the pub jukebox, back in the day. Some liked it, but it's not one to sing along with.
During their 86 show at Wembley, Mercury said on stage that "we're going to stay together until we fucking well die", which was prophetic and literally true as they moved into the studio so that they could record one more album, anything they could put in front of him, whenever he was phiscally capable.
You nailed it. Tenacity and determination.
This song was also in the UK singles chart when Freddie died.
