The guy in the video was indeed Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife. The program was a tribute to him and his band, and every performer that night sang one of their hits. Westlife had a monster hit in the UK with "You Raise Me Up," thus Sohyang sang this in tribute to him. Shane told Sohyang that her version was his new favourite. Not hard to see why, eh? The music for the song "You Raise Me Up" was originally written by a Norwegian group called Secret Garden, while the lyrics were written by an Irishman named Brendan Graham. Mr. Graham saw Sohyang's performance and was absolutely thrilled by her rearrangement of the music and performance, so he had the Irish embassy in Seoul get in contact with Sohyang to let her know that he felt her version was the best ever. Here is how to pronounce Sohyang properly. So is just as it would be in English. The h and y are where it takes a slight bend in the road. They are pronounced as English speakers would say Hugh or huge or humongous. And the the ang is said as ong or ung with the o being soft and u as well. Sohyang, all one word and the spelling is from her passport, so that is how it is correctly spelled, too. Sohyang was named by her grandmother, whom she believes God inspired with the name even though neither her parents nor grandmother were Christians. Her name means "enjoy the light" as people have correctly informed me. Sohyang's favourite movie star is Brad Pitt. Like "duh," eh? What woman doesn't love Brad Pitt? Ha, ha! 😎 Sohyang is a 100% self-taught singer except for a handful of sessions with Seth Riggs, which she didn't talk about in the interview I learned this from, so I think she had her Seth Riggs lessons after 2009 when this interview was recorded. She said she spent time with one of the producers of Boyz II Men while on vacation in California and learned either vocal technique or audio recording technique or both because he had a home recording studio. When she watches movies she doesn't take her hubby along because she wants to concentrate on the film without anyone interrupting or talking to her. Sorry hubby, but you can be so distracting and annoying at the movies! 😝 Sohyang likes action movies! She carries her Bible with her most places. It is an English New International Version and she tries to read five chapters a day, because it helps her stay fresh on her English. Oh yes, Sohyang wanted to be involved in musicals on stage but was offered the role of Carmen, which she turned down because Carmen was a prostitute. It sounded like she was offered prostitute roles repeatedly, so she more or less gave up on anything operatic. Though, of course, she did appear in "The Sound of Music." She is just one of those naturally wholesome women, and I think that is one of the reasons we like her. 😇❤ Sohyang is also analytic to the nth degree! She will listen to a song she likes over and over until she is satisfied she knows it inside out. The bass line, the drums, the vocals. She keeps going until she has almost worn out the recording. Well, she didn't say that last part but it is pretty obvious that she knows her music and when she decides to cover a song, she is going to cover it like it has never been covered before! She was actually sick during this performance (pneumonia) & had been told by her doctor not to perform. As a long time Sohyang fan IMO this isn’t one of her best vocal performances, it’s not as tight as her best performances but I am judging this by sohyang’s incredible high standards & not by yr avg amazing vocalist.having said that it is still amazing but when you listen to Sohyang as long as I have & love her as much as I do, you get rather used to listening to perfection & I don’t feel that this is & you can tell that something is wrong, she looks very pale, very tired & like she has lost some weight in her face, just like you’d expect from someone who has suffered from multiple bouts of pneumonia, the kiss of death for a singer because it affects your lungs. It makes you wonder just what it would’ve sounded like if she’d been 100% healthy!!!!

A filter works, but many reactors make it huge and obtrusive - not necessary. It can be transparent or some small letters in the corner of the screen and still work. Pausing does have the benefit of allowing us to see the video. Didn't mean to offend. Cheers.

This song became famous because of Josh Groban more than a decade ago, and yet it isn't originally his (I believe the original was Irish or something, in the begining it wasn't that successful until Josh sang it, then it exploded). This cover is amazing, really great, but please check out the rendition Tommy Johansson did of this same song (one Octave challenge)... The vocals... The Phenomenal So Hyang gave another Master Class performance, even though she is not well here. Prior to this event, she was released from the hospital, still recovering from one of her numerous bouts with pneumonia. Her physicians advised her to cancel her performance, to not talk, and to just rest. So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Furthermore, she believed her singing career was over, and decided to sing one last time. After this performance, she was readmitted to the hospital. So Hyang disappeared from public singing for nearly two years. When she returned in 2020, she proved her technique is rock solid. In 2022, and now 2023, don't know if it's possible, but So Hyang sounds better than ever. Her range is still ridiculous and her breath control remains insane and unmatched.
Sohyang is a cruel predator in the music world. He upgrades the masterpieces to his own level and digests them. So she doesn't need a new song of her own
