awesome video! I'll be doing the 100k this year. Do you have any recco on type of trail shoes for the race? I currently have the Brooks Cascadia with rock plate but have been considering Hoka Speedgoat 2s for added cushion over the extra miles. Coming from a history of Asics Nimbus and Ghost shoes so used the cushion. Unsure of what percentage of race is so technical that a rigid rockplate is really necessary
Hi Gabe Thanks! I am going back to do the 100k again this year and really looking forward to it again. Last year I made a mistake with shoe choice. I wore a pair of New Balance Leadville trail shoes which are very good on normal trails but not really suited to the terrain that I encountered during the Transylvania 100k. The grip on the Leadvilles just wasn't enough for the snow, mud and steep technical terrain. I would certainly recommend the Hoka Speedgoat 2s over the Brooks Cascadia as the Brooks are very similar to the NB Leadville trail shoes. The shoes with the most grip are definitely the correct choice for the Transylvania 100k. This year I will either wear either a pair of Saucony KOA ST shoes or a pair of Hoka EVO JAWZ. The Hoka EVO JAWZ juat arrived today so I haven't used them out in the mountains yet so I will decide on shoe choice nearer to race day. I would also recommend that if you have a Garmin or Suunto watch that you put the GPX file of the race route onto it. And I would recommend you also put the GPX file onto your phone and use an App like VIEWRANGER or similar for navigation if need be. As last year I got lost several times during the night when some race markers were removed by people unknown and it took a while to navigate my way back onto the correct race route. I would also recommend that you carry all of the mandatory race kit as I used all of the mandatory race kit during last years race. This year if the weather conditions are similar to 2017 I will also carry a very light INOV8 insulation jacket. The Transylvania 100k race is tough but fantastic, it has beautiful scenery, wild landscape, amazing trails and mountains and very friendly people!
Thanks so much for the tips! I ended up getting the HOKAs and have loved them since after paring with some firmer custom insoles. I tried the Salomon Speedcross 4 Wide but they are so tough on hard rock and pavement + not ideal for up to 30 hours of run-walking. I'll definitely checkout the Evo Jawz and Koa ST as well - good shout. Great extra tips on the GPX file. I have a Fenix 5X so I'll be loading the course on and just discovered ViewRanger last week so will be sure to try that out. Noticed you have a course profile sleeve as well, I ordered one of those the other week! Excellent that you're doing it again - looking forwards to seeing you at the start! If you see some folks wearing Midnight Runner branded tops, that'll be us - round 5 of us doing the 100k.
Fernando Galicia I did finish the race in a time of 32 hours. Normallt the cut off for the 100k is 30 hours. But due to the extreme bad weather conditions we encountered and the fact that some of the race markers were removed on a section of the race and some runners ended up getting lost because of this, including me. The race organiser extended the race by 2 hours. I would highly recommend the Transylvania 100k race as the route run through some spectacular countryside.
Epic lads:)
