In this video, I dive into the relatively new Ozone Speedster 3. A lot of people have been asking for my thoughts on this wing. In the process of testing it, I was reminded of an important lesson I learned while testing the Qubik in 2019. Hopefully this prevents someone from experiencing a full speed collapse like Judson did. 😂 Not to worry though, a situation like this is of no fault of the wing, but rather a common but simple modification to the brake length. Wait in the beginning of the video you say that 20 meter wing has a range of 55 to 100 Kg, and your around 105 Kg. The conversion tool on Google, i get 105 Kg being 231.485 lbs. I seriously don't think your 231 lbs. 110kg to lbs would be 242.5 lbs. Just sayin {@&@} 3:54

Great video, often overlooked scenario that a lot of us acro pilots have encountered. I have my snake adjusted so far in that speed bar isn’t even an option and on landing if I am overly aggressive in my flare the wing will just deflate/collapse violently behind me...but I am aware and expecting this. But I could never borrow/sell that wing in that configuration. Great video, nearly untouched subject.

Video idea! So I’ve seen people paramotor camp/backpack and I’d love a video on your thoughts about that or even go into how you would set up a rig to best achieve cargo space whilst minimizing danger from things falling of or something. You’d be able to identify more problems or benefits then I can and I’d love to hear all you could tell :)
Bag off choice for me is a 30L bag with a steel frame stool. Solid steel hoops and a bunch of little places to secure it to my front. Room enough to store tent, sleeping bag and a foam mat, and still have place for food cooking stuff, a few litres clean water(even a bit of extra fuel). A little awkward at first until you get used to how to attach it so it remains comfortable and out of the way. I have also used a duffle bag tied beneath the fuel tank, but that is more work and the first few tries loaded in too much unnecessary weight. Like with normal backpacking, less is more. And the less complicated you make it the more time can be spent for fun.

I was hoping that it was a little faster.
I fly a 24m Paramania GTX, and a 23m Niviuk Qubik. They both top out with trims out at 35 mph with the GTX being the best of everything (overall averages) I've flown so far.

Yeah tucker I did that to my niviuk and when I trimmed out and saw that break lines tight I immediately trimmed back in not really thinking that it would clapse but thought it wasn't right to fly that way. So nice to know that it would of if I kept it like that that day. Ty

This makes me want to test fly my buddies speedster 3 20m. I'm still pretty happy on my spyder 24 but, that's a sexy wing..
If I ever got into paramotor. No matter how many thousands of hours I have. I would only want a beginner/easy to use wing. I personally am not a risk taker and would paramotor for the leisure aspect of it. Just to get in the sky and enjoy the sights. I wouldn't need any of those speed/stunt wings. Call me a wuss. Different people do things for different reasons.
With this said ... I probably will never paramotor. So it is a moot point.
That's the funny thing about flying. You think you know what you'll enjoy about it, but it always surprises people to find out what gets them excited. Whether it's carving down from 2000 feet with your engine off, or flying so low that you come back dirtier than you left.You don't know what you'll love until you experience it. Come fly! The more the better.
@@nategoodwin3329 I can atest to that; you never know what you'll enjoy until you get into it, or how you're assessment of acceptable risk will change. I remember back when I started skydiving, I thought the guys jumping with mini canopies seemingly the size of a shopping bag were all nuts; just give me an oversized, slow and stable beginner wing and I'm happy as a clam. Then 50 jumps in, and I was fast growing bored with the slowness and anemic responsiveness of the beginner canopies, and stepped up to an intermediate with significantly more aggressive loading. I wasn't hooking in landings or anything really advanced, but I was having a whole lot more fun under canopy for only a slight, but perfectly manageable, increase in risk. It took not much time at all to realize a performance upgrade was warranted, either; maybe 4 months of steady jumping? And when I started I basically wanted the biggest, slowest wing possible, lol!
I recall that the first step-up from a beginner canopy was a really big deal for my instructor. We had hours of conversation in the evenings at the DZ, discussing when is the right time to upgrade and how you might know, if the risk/reward analysis for an upgrade was being properly done or if my growing familiarity with the beginner wing was clouding the assessment, etc. Basically, he was trying to see if my desire to move up to a sportier wing was motivated by actual knowledge and experience, or if it was only an emotional, competitive desire to not always be the last one on a flight to land. Looking back from a decade later, I see exactly why he was concerned about my headspace during this transition. Lots of people can quickly overestimate their abilities once they become familiar with a particular piece of kit, and advancing too quickly is a big issue in the skydive community, and folks can quickly find themselves in serious trouble by unwittingly pushing ahead of their skill level. My instructor went out of his way to teach me better decision making, to assess not only the mechanical nuts and bolts of such a decision, but more importantly to really assess my own thought processes and desires. Valuable lessons that go far beyond just the niche world of skydiving.
Good content and interesting. I took lessons once. For me, too many variables and risks such as Tucker illustrated what w/lines and wing shapes, sizes and what have you. I've been a sport pilot for 30 yrs. I'm sticking with my fixed-wing STOL flying. The variables and risks I find much more obvious and straight forward. Besides, I can actually go places in relative comfort. But like you say, different strokes for different folks -:)
me too!!! and in recent months I think I'd want to fly with a partner in the sky with me most times so we can keep each other in check with good decisions
That’s what I said when I started, now I own a Speedster 3 and want even more efficiency and speed.
I wonder if a semi-rigid setup with some composite rods could reduce some of the collapse risk? (And even if it somehow does, would it be worth the extra trouble in setting it up?)

Great for the trike, great for cross country, great for stability, great for yanking and banking, can handle a modest weight overload with grace, doesn't demand constant control inputs from the brakes, you can just trim it out for speed and go, what's not to like? Sounds like a solid all around keeper to me! 😋

I have flown the original speedster since they first came out in 2012 I think it was. It has been a brilliant wing, Never had any major problems in hundreds of hrs flying in all conditions. I am only just thinking of changing now to something lighter for nil wind take offs. Also getting a bit weaker as I am sixty yrs old.

Thanks for sharing your flights with us. I do paragliding without a motor since six years and flew with lots of different wings. I‘m soooo confused about the size of your wings! 20m² with a 100kg load sounds like a miniwing setup (fast, stable as a plank and very agile). For example, if I do xc as a paragliding pilot i fly 24² with about 80kg load. Why do you use such small wings for xc? Can you do a video about the differences of paragliding and para-faning (😉)?

I would do a foot launch tandem if there was a good headwind but I don't see the point when the trike is so much easier and safer.
I have been flying fixed wing for nearly 35 years and have some Pitt Special stick time. One thing that I was wonder is when you get to the very top of a speed range, and lets say you " redline" it, so to speak, do you ever hear or feel control surface flutter? You mentioned several times thoughout the video of the importance of having slack in the brake lines, thats where I was wondering if that would be conducive to some flutter of the brakes on the actually wing at high speeds. The Pitt I have 30 hours in experienced that once, and even RC planes due to poor clevis connection. It sounded like a very deep buzz, and vibrations through the stick. Of course immediate power reduction and slight control imput resolved it, but just wondering about wings with really no structure. Excellent video btw.
I have gotten some flutter before when accidentally flying behind another pilot which was a bit unnerving. In my experience though if a wing takes a collapse like this it happens without warning, it is a fabric wing after all.

Wouldn't weight to power be off its like tryna put a plastic bag over your paramotor except its tryna hold you in the air well its tryna control wind threw the wings so like free falling with a bit of thrust

I came across a paramotor wing a very old one from 1990 and no people always said be wary about eBay then coming to buying a pair motor wing and I couldn't find any info on this wing if on Google if it was for beginners or what class ranking that was even for edel Corvette 22 pre own 1990 paraglider wing comes with a harness what I came across but I couldn't figure out what type of wing this one was even was if it was for beginners or was for professional flyers no information on it on the internet so I figured I'd ask a guy who actually flies what he would know about it
wow, this is a major wake-up call. I'm considering getting a speedster in the coming years, but currently fly a roadster 3. Is there any general rule-of-thumb for how much is TOO much brake shortening? Obviously, this is a different answer per glider, but would love any advice someone could offer. Thanks!
I own a roadster and a spyder. I think the only tried and true answer to this is the start with stock configuration and go up high and trim out on bar and take note of how much play is in the brakes before the wing deforms. If you have 5 inches to work with then you could reasonably and safely shorten it 1-3 inches but be conservative about it. As long as your brakes are slack when fully trimmed out on bar you should be fine
Hey, so I’m looking into taking a training class and buying a setup I can take apart to travel with. I live in Nevada and fly fish and overland as much as I can but both I can’t take with me for work. I drive truck and want to take the rig with me to fly around the country. I get up your way once and a while but I’m all over the country and it would be awesome to get out and fly when I have a day off in places. Do you have a recommendation on a motor I can make as small as possible to stow?
the PAP paramotor is one of the best and comes apart nicely. The actual motor you choose to go along with the paramotor will depend completely on your weight. You wouldn't be taking apart the motor regardless because that will create a host of problems. I have the Vitterazi MOster 185 and that seems to be the standard in the industry for guys over 200 lbs. if you are less than 180lbs then go with the Atom 80
This type of collapse would scare the hell out of me, although I do notice the recovery was almost instantaneous and with almost no loss of altitude. Still even if I was that good at recovery it would still scare the hell out of me.

Great review! Looks like a great wing. Have you had the opportunity to fly a Piper yet? Super duper fast and solid as could be. The risers are super simple and streamline. You should check one out if you haven't! I'd love to see your opinion!

@@TuckerGott I've got a 25m if you ever want to try it out on the trike. My 22m driftair is way more efficient than my piper. You definitely give up efficiency for the amount of speed it has, but you can get places quick and its super stable but still alot of fun
You should get a simple ASI. I Wouldn't rely on GPS ground speed.
So if you were doing the Icarus Trophy again would you be tempted to go with the Speedster 3 for the improved stability or stick with the Freeride?
That's such a tough question, honestly. The Speedster 3 would make the flying so much easier but the Freeride still leads in efficiency. I would want to figure out exactly how much more efficient the Freeride is to decide if the trade off was worth it.

I'm hoping you can help me understand this brake length/trimmers released issue better. I'm having a really hard time understanding the dynamics between them.
On my Sirocco 2, the brake pulley is attached near the top of D riser, near the mallion. As the D mallion position moves up as the trims are released, so does the brake pulley - so the positional relationship between the D lines and the brake lines should be the same, no matter the trim position, right? I notice the same amount of bow in the brake lines whether trimmed in or out, and I thought thats why the put the brake pulley on the D riser... so that no matter the D riser trim position/length, the brake length would just move in proportion. The only thing that really changes, is how much higher you have to reach to grab the brake toggles - and maybe this is where Im getting confused. IF the brakes are stowed, then there should be no issue, trims in or out. But if you're holding the brakes are shoulder level without any trailing edge deflection - THEN decide to trim out and keep holding brakes at shoulder level, you'd find you're pulling more brake - in the case with my Sirocco - that would be about 6 inches more - and you could absolutely be deflecting the trailing edge.
Don't quote me on this because I'm not entirely sure if this is accurate. But my understanding is that the reflex profile means that the lines extend in an exponential fashion rather than linear. So it's not just the angle of attack that's changing, it's the profile of the wing as well. As the profile changes and more "reflex" is engaged, more brake length is demanded.
@@TuckerGott thank you for the detailed response! I think you must be correct, but I still can't visualize how the brake and D line length relationship can change, considering the movement of the brake pulley when trimmers are opened. The brake handles move up along with the riser webbing and are consequentially harder to reach on some frames. I think I need to do some more reading about it.
