In case someone wants to criticize those welds, I want to point out that the smaller the diameter of the pipe, the more difficult the welds become. Anyone who has welded pipe or boiler tubes will tell you about it.
As someone that sometimes builds (stainless) exhausts/manifolds for hobby or semi professional purposes, I strongly disagree. The guy can tigweld, that's for sure, and is probably better at it than many. But there is no backing gas used - the tubes are open to atmosphere and no flow of shielding gas is introduced, the welds are burned (darkly discolored) because of slow speed and high current and lack of cover of shielding gas. I find it a waste of expensive materials to not do it the right way. I'm not talking about the lack of pretty rainbow colors here, just tig welding of stainless steel basics. The welds aren't very uniform either. Plenty of good examples to be found on YT on how it can be done much better. Will it hold? Sure. Is this best practice and will it prevent cracks? Only time will tell.
You can also leak test exhausts by getting someone on the outside with a cloth to muffle the exhaust exit. That way you actually get overpressure on the tube and you'll spot leaks easier.

Ah yes, weldy boi. I have tampered in being a weldy boi at my job, and have received a sunburn on both arms due to the bright lights and the protective sleeves slipping and exposing bare skin. You most certainly would want to get yourself a suitable welding mask if you wish to watch a weldy boi do their work.
This is the second time you gave me almost a heart-attack in two consecutive videos. That beep at 9:02 sounds quite similar to my smoke alarm. Maybe by the third time my body learned the difference and I won't shoot up from my bed with a pulse of 180 :( 😂
I like the lagging rope, I used just glassfibre tape and it is a bit thin. Where did you get the rope from? TIG is a great skill to pick up and not too difficult. I bought a 210ext Rtech AC/DC last year to do aluminium and stainless and it has been expensive (£1500 with gas), but I have been amazed at how easy and fun aluminium is (I don’t usually use the word fun to describe work). The other comments on back purging TIG pipe are kind of correct, but in reality it’s not got a nuclear reactor in there (well I assume you do not have a cat and some dastardly plan involving the artic). My stainless exhausts on my boat are at 15 years old now since I MiG welded them with argon/CO2 and they are fine.
Regardless of any possible criticisms you may get, I can assure you that there were no drastic faults with your efforts. And yes, I have had a full and complete career of an "industrial service technician" experience/employment.
Have you considered integrating some kind of heat exchanger to use the exhaust stream to heat the cabin, unless you intend to use engine coolant for this purpose.
Interesting concept. Is that a thing, using exhausts as a heat source? Certainly a lot of free energy (heat) there. I guess on a larger boat you could more easily adapt the exhaust to be used this way but with Alan’s engine sitting pretty in the small volume of the boat there should be more than enough heat to keep things cosy.
@@teeanahera8949 it's a thing for sure, most boats liquid cool their exhaust and dump it overboard. Integrating another exchanger into a closed loop glycol system could extract that heat to be stored in a simple hot water buffer tank.
Hearing it too. The echo is to short, loud, and sharp to be a natural reverberation. Probably accidentally playing back the VO twice somehow with one of them being delayed slightly.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals Did you by any chance make a video recording of the VO as well? If so maybe double check to make sure that video has it's sound muted, assuming the video is in the timeline. There is definitely a change in the VO. Sounds like a very short (few milliseconds) delay but could be a phasing thing as well.
@@greylocke100 No, that's not what's happening this time. :) Compression artifacts would not be isolated to the VO and would also sound different. Both phasing/delay and compression can cause loss of bass though you could mistake them that way.
Being a former owner of a boat with a Bukh enginge, and having done a boat trip with the former Dutch Bukh guru (who was as complicated and useless as the engines are), I can only feel sorry for someone attaching shiny jewellery to a dying corpse.

As a boiler operator I agree with Brian.

As someone who welds daily... those welds arent pretty but they are fine, i was surprised he wasnt backflowing gas to the inside of the pipe

Since the tail end of the exhaust is mounted solid, a second bendy bit would help at the other end should any welds every fail.

Nice job on the exhaust Alex, surely that was a zinc anode rather than aluminium? Lucky the boat yard has a weldy guy!
Zinc has a melting point too low for an exhaust. Some people will criticise an anode in any case, but I went with Alu for the fun factor.

I've not changed the process - SM7B, two pop filters, proximate speaking distance, and a slight low end boost in EQ.
