  • During the 1930s and 1950s Gaito Kamishibai (街頭紙芝居; street paper-plays)was one of, and at times the most popular form of entertainment in Japan. The kamishibai-man, and most performers were men, bicycled around town and performed a series of stories that were painted on cards and pulled out in sequence as the story unfolded. The kamishibai-man earned a living by selling penny candy between the stories. A typical performance would have an adventure tale, a melodramatic tale, and a comedy. In addition, there was usually a series of quizzes that the kamishibai-man would pose to the children. This video presents a number of those quizzes. Some are very easy; some are very difficult. They all provide a window into Japanese society, culture, and sensibilities during the 1950s. Challenge yourself by seeing how many of these questions can you get right!

Really fun! It challenges my Japanese language knowledge, general knowledge about Japan/folklore and just puzzle solving. めっちゃ楽しかった!
