  • Wolfe House & Building Movers specializes in lifting entire buildings out of the ground so they can be transported to new locations entirely. This is done for historic preservation, moving homes away from busy roads, and in flood damage prevention. We look into the logistics of how this happens and why somebody would want to do this.

    • @GenesisRC
      @GenesisRC 5 років тому +22

      As a house raiser in Ontario I can answer this question. They breifly explained this but I will include more. Most buildings I work are cottages on piers and have a decent crawl space to begin work, for you to slide steel beams under the structure and align, disconnect electrical and plumbing, and so on for prep. The steel beams are then run up to the joists or wood beams, I usually do this with air bags because of the limited clearance. The steel will rest on a jenga block like tower that will be used to lift the structure later. The jenga blocks we use most are 4' pressure treated 6x8. The jenga block towers are called "cribs", and need to have a level base to be built upon otherwise you have unnessessary forces on the structure and it limits the height you can lift. For small structures 2 steel beams parrellel to one another is usually sufficient for support, anything more than that requires "crossers" which are just steel beams running perpendicular to the other ones underneath and get clamped at the intersections. For a 2 main beam 2 crosser setup the desirable situation is to have one crib at each intersection of steel, which is 4 cribs. A hydraulic jack is setup in each crib centered under the steel, and hoses connect each jack to a pump where the operator decides how he wants the structure lifted. For our equipment, we can run our hydraulics at 10,000psi safely, which is 49,000lbs per jack. Most jacks we have are 17 inch stroke, so more jenga blocks are added to the crib and the jacks are reset to go higher. For my work we dont usually move down the road. Typically we slide the building over using rollers on more steel beams, just enough for the contractor to excavate for basement building or pier work. Im open to more questions but thats the general idea

    Now, I'm actually going to be involved in such a house move next week, as I'm responsible for the fiber and telephone infrastructure on the public utility poles, for the college where I work! In my country 🇵🇭 moving houses to another place is a tradition and with a little help of our fellow country men it's called bayanihan ( buy-uh-nee-hun ). Especially when a family has a " bahay kubo " ( nipa hut ) the ‘bahay-kubo’, can be moved using wooden poles which are carried from the old place to the new one. By Able-bodied men usually participated in such feats, while women stood and watched, casually chatting and cheering the men on. Afterwards, there was a small gathering as a form of celebration and socialization. The Bayanihan derived from a Filipino word “bayan”, which means nation, town or community. The term bayanihan itself literally means “being in a bayan”, which refers to the spirit of communal unity, work and cooperation to achieve a particular goal.
    The Bayanihan spirit is still alive, at least to some extent. There are still people in rural areas that transfer their house into another place and people still help. Unfortunately, the Bayanihan tradition is slowly dying out. It is not practiced as frequently as before.
    I am proud being a FILIPINO #LoveYourOwn

    I own a 100 year old farm house. It is built on piers. It is 2 stores tall. I must move it about half a mile to make room for a new sports complex.
    My biggest worry are the 2 fireplaces on the outside walls. One chimney houses a fireplace on the first floor and another on the second floor. The other has a fireplace on the fireplace on the first floor.
    What is involved in moving the chimneys with the house? How difficult/expensive is it compared to removing the chimneys and fireplaces? They are both solid without cracks or broken bricks. I know you can’t give an exact answer without seeing it. Could you give a general idea?
    I have a year to move it or it will be bulldozed. Would it be difficult to get it scheduled?
    Thanks in advance.
