I loved watching Wayne Dobson on TV, hugely entertaining and always funny. Thanks for talking about him! (Leicester is pronounced "Lester", by the way!)😊

Robert Ferguson said, "I saw him in Vegas back in 08." I was notified via email of the comment but it never appeared here. This is not the first time a comment has been dropped and it is a mystery to me why,

There is this ongoing discussion whether or not comedy kills wonder in a magic act or not. On the one hand comedy elements increase the entertainment value of a routine if added properly however without a doubt they draw the attention of the audience away from the actual magic which can be a good thing ( when used for misdirection on purpose) or a bad thing because if the goal of the routine is to create the most baffeling magical moment of wonder the magic should be as pure as possible and then comedy elements will not be helpfull in the process because the audience should witness the miracle happen under the most impossible conditions and the magic should speak for itself and come straight to the point which is why visual magic like manipulation always gets a good reaction.
Basically comparing the dove act by lance burton ( a supreme manipulation routine) to waynes sponge ball act ( a comedy magic routine) is like comparing red wine to white wine with the assumption that both are the same type of liquid and one has to be better when it the end it comes down to personal preference. (However to get this right you are comparing some of the best red wine with some of the best white wine here and it might be possible to compare red wines to eachother )
Personally I think it all comes down to the impression that should be received by the audience and which picture of the performer they should keep in their mind when going home. So when people talk about the dove act basically what was done by lance is what should be remembered and when it comes to waynes act he rather prefers to be remembered for his personality and showmanship and not for the magic trick ( transpostion of a sponge ball).
However if someone wants to become a true master in magic this person has be good in both catergories - it is not enough to have skill and show that because manipulations even the most difficult or beautiful ones only remain a show off of skill but need t a proper routine to become "magical". On the other hand people should not think that the strength or impact of a strong magic effect will not be noticed when the focus of the routine is not on the magic but on comedy.
The reason why I admire magicians like Wayne Dobsen , Paul Daniels, Johnny Thompson....is that they can take the oldest most obvious simple magic trick and turn this trick into a miracle by adding their indivudial performance style to it. So this ability to to that is also a type of "skill" for a magician if not one of the most important ones.

you put a lot of thought into your comments, Markus, and I very much appreciate that you took the time to share your thoughts here. You know, once Lance started to do his full stage act, he began to add humor to his act, and he is quite funny, too. The more I perform and more i appreciate the power of humor. My friend and mentor Denny Haney used to tell me, "Yucks mean bucks, David," and they really do. Thanks for sharing Markus.
