F35 has a powerful auxiliary power unit reliable APU in addition to the powerful large diameter single jet engine. The APU generates electric power which runs the electrical avionics. Radar, ECM, and possible laser pulse weapons could run on such a robust APU.
It's advertised as a 28,000lb dry thrust, 43,000lb max thrust with AB motor, and shows every sign that it produces those levels of thrust. The Improved Performance Engines for the F-16C Block 30-52 are anywhere from 28,000-29,160lbs in AB, so basically what the PW F135 in the F-35 will do with dry thrust alone. It's an insane fighter engine in the thrust department, with excellent maintainability and FADEC. Pratt & Whitney already developed a Growth option mid-section modular compressor stage drop-in replacement that increases the thrust to between 45,580 lb to 47,300lb in AB, and between 29,680 to 30,800lb in dry military power. F-16 and F/A-18 pilots who have converted to the F-35 say it feels like a turbo-charged fighter in comparison to what they came from in many ways. F-15C pilots say they had better acceleration in the twin-engined Eagle, but the F-35A has better slow speed responsiveness and stack/scissors performance. They said the F-15C has slightly better Instantaneous and Sustained Turn Rates, and can recover airspeed faster. F-16C pilots said the F-35A has almost identical ITR, slightly less STR, but recovers airspeed better than the Viper. 100% of all former F-15C and F-16C pilots said they would take the F-35A into combat over their previous jets without reservation, especially for BVR engagements.
@@georgehunter2813 Twin-Engined fighters suffer from scaled expenses since you need twice the internal volume and plumbing for 2 motors, a larger airframe for fuel and lift, which then requires more volume, materials, manufacturing processes, maintenance, etc. The F-22 has 2 extremely powerful motors already, and no matter how you load it with full internal weapons, it still has greater than 1:1 thrust/weight ratio. In full afterburner, it generates 70,000lb of thrust, which is ridiculous. It would be fun to make a few air demo F-15s with F135 motors in them, but with MATV 3D TV nozzles integrated with the DFLCS, a more modern composite airframe dropping the weight while increasing the strength, but this would cost billions to do and have no operational capability added since the RCS is so huge on the F-15.
