Welcome to a unique adventure with Jack and Sophia! In today's video, we take you deep into the heart of China's 816 nuclear project, a decommissioned and secretive Cold War-era site that began in 1966. This underground labyrinth was once a top-secret facility where the Chinese government researched and developed nuclear technology and plutonium.
Join us as we explore the eerie, fascinating remnants of this vast complex, which was partially opened to the public in 2002. With exclusive access, we'll delve into areas rarely seen on UA-cam, uncovering the secrets of the past and the incredible engineering feats of the time.
We'll walk through dark, cold tunnels, and marvel at the blue-lit pathways that once bustled with top-secret activity. You'll see the incredible architecture of the 60s and 70s, learn about the sophisticated water cooling systems that kept the reactors safe, and discover how steam power was ingeniously used to avoid detection by US intelligence.
We'll also explore the raw, uncensored wine cellar, a rarely seen part of the facility, and stand in awe before the main reactor - the very heart of this massive operation. You'll learn about the control rooms with their vintage equipment and uncover the clever methods used to keep this project hidden from the world.
Thank you to iChongqing for setting this up and making this happen! We hope you enjoy this insightful and captivating journey into a hidden piece of history with us. The 816 project was not just an ordinary base. At that time, China did not even have the ability to build a large underground nuclear facility, and even the concrete used for the project could not be produced. In order to prevent being detected by the Americans, the underground nuclear facility was built between two mountains. If there was a problem with the nuclear facility, it would only cause the two mountains to collapse and bury the nuclear facility without spreading to the surrounding residents. Why did the Chinese people be so crazy in such a difficult era? Because not only the United States declared that it would bomb China with nuclear weapons, but also the Soviet Union also publicized that it would bomb China with nuclear weapons. A former staff member said that his job was only to use his life to block up the nuclear facility when there was a problem.

The reason China chose to build it's nuclear faculty in sichuan is because sichuan is the deepest habitant area inland. It is the last defence line should an invasion ever occur. The government moved half of China's industrial resource including machinery and engineers from Shanghai and Manchuria to the mountains of sichuan. They built artillery factories, rockets, jet planes and nuclear bombs in sichuan, enough to fight another world war.
The underground nuclear factory you visit today is designed to be operatable under direct nuclear attack. Which means when half of China is annihilated this factory will still be able to produce bombs for retaliation. It's a doomsday scenario.
Today sichuan is still the main production zone for military equipment. The famous Chinese stealth jet J-20 is designed and produced by Chengdu Ariel Corporation.

You may not know a piece of history, Japan had massacred the people of the State of China, millions of people died at the hands of the Japanese, however, the Communist Party of China led the people of the State of China to avoid the catastrophe of being exterminated. After the founding of New China, China also realised that if it was weak, it would be beaten, which is why it desperately developed nuclear weapons.
