Shania has 3 Diamond albums and Gloria Stefan is one of the most accomplished latino singers and her story is truly amazing and Mariah well she has a 5 octave bocal range, writes and produces all of her music and considered one of the best vocalists of the past 60 years by classical music and mainstream music critics. Celine well she is 1/3 of the Vocal Trinity so needless to say she is one of the best. To me it was uncalled for, to be honest Mariah could've whistled the entire lyrics of the song and do the adlibs in 3 different octaves but chose not to because it was not her night, it was Arethas, Mariah had hers in 2018 Divas Christmas Special.

In my opinion, it was one of the most epic vocal moments ever! Céline and Aretha made this performance what is was expected to be: a divas performance, doing an incredible vocal showcase. The others were simple back singers. Sorry but this is the truth.
This made me so happy. I think people don't understand the culture and era that Aretha comes from. She comes from the church and gospel singers do a "call and response" where they feed off of each other's energy and improvise. It's very spontaneous and I love that Celine picked up on it right away.

Mariah has always been a beast when it comes to vocals but it's more believable to say that her voice was already tired at that point of the night rather than saying she was holding back to show respect to Aretha because we all know how she is when it comes to her voice she likes to state that she is the boss she just couldn't compete due to tiredness and that's ok, Celine ate it in that performance.

I love this part since I saw it live in 1998! They’ve killed it. But I think that Celine caused a commotion because nobody expected that she can do that. But you know what I really missed there? By the following weekend, the song had been edited down to what you see here, the end. The full performance hasn't ever been seen and is only available on the DIVAS LIVE cd.

Maybe Mariah Carey could've used some whistles notes to participate on that, but it was supposed to be a belting moment, which she was not really comfortable with since her voice was not in its best days. I think that's why she kinda refused to play along with Aretha.

Just an honest observation - Aretha is not very gracious when singing with other female singers - she's somewhat of a vocal bully, lol. I also think that Aretha figured she could out sing everyone on the stage and I think Celine surprised her. Let's be honest, Mariah did NOT want any of that. And to be 100% truthful, even Celine's notes were NOT "quite" as high as Aretha - listen to Celine hit the notes right after Aretha and you will hear that Celine is very close, but her notes are just slightly lower. Still, Aretha was caught off guard that Celine could actually hang with her and notice how she quickly ended the song once Celine came out....hymm.....

During this era, Mariah could still hit whistle notes and low notes but her higher "belts" were not as strong as Aretha or Celine Dion so she decided to join the back up singers that night and let Celine and Aretha go toe to toe.

Exactly. I love a lot of Mariah's music and she is obviously a legend. But in terms of "vocals" she lost a lot of her voice drastically compared to other singers. I have heard that singing a lot in whistle register can cause damage over time. Also drinking and vocal nodules may play a role. Age is NOT a factor...Aretha proves that by how she out-sang everybody....except Celine Dion.

Mariah has always been a beast when it comes to vocals but it's more believable to say that her voice was already tired at that point of the night rather than saying she was holding back to show respect to Aretha because we all know how she is when it comes to her voice she likes to state that she is the boss she just couldn't compete due to tiredness and that's ok, Celine ate it in that performance.

By the following weekend, the song had been edited down to what you see here, the end. The full performance hasn't ever been seen and is only available on the DIVAS LIVE cd.

Maybe Mariah Carey could've used some whistles notes to participate on that, but it was supposed to be a belting moment, which she was not really comfortable with since her voice was not in its best days.

All the Divas Supported Celine ...except for Mariah ... these 2 lady's ( Aretha and Mariah) were together all the time ... during the previous rehearsals both critized the rest of the Divas backstage just because they had a fun time together ... and these 2 always pretended to be better than the rest ... but at the End of the concert in the Testimony Song 🎵 Aretha called Mariah trying ti snubb the rest of the Divas and then being together attacked to the rest of the Diva specifically to Celine Dion ... (not Respecting Carol King whom was the songwriter of Natural Woman and the special guest ...Aretha didn't let her sing a short part of own Carol's Song ) that is why Celine Dion didn't care to face Aretha.... Just an honest observation - Aretha is not very gracious when singing with other female singers - she's somewhat of a vocal bully, lol. I also think that Aretha figured she could out sing everyone on the stage and I think Celine surprised her. Let's be honest, Mariah did NOT want any of that. And to be 100% truthful, even Celine's notes were NOT "quite" as high as Aretha - listen to Celine hit the notes right after Aretha and you will hear that Celine is very close, but her notes are just slightly lower. Still, Aretha was caught off guard that Celine could actually hang with her and notice how she quickly ended the song once Celine came out....hymm.....

During this era, Mariah could still hit whistle notes and low notes but her higher "belts" were not as strong as Aretha or Celine Dion so she decided to join the back up singers that night and let Celine and Aretha go toe to toe.

Exactly. I love a lot of Mariah's music and she is obviously a legend. But in terms of "vocals" she lost a lot of her voice drastically compared to other singers. I have heard that singing a lot in whistle register can cause damage over time. Also drinking and vocal nodules may play a role. Age is NOT a factor...Aretha proves that by how she out-sang everybody....except Celine Dion.
