I love how the rooster is just going for it too.

Two of my teachers in primary school loved music, and liked bob dylan, tom waits etc, and they taught the whole class this song when we were like 10. They were pretty cool teachers.

I hear ya. The contemporary folk label is accurate as several of the monster tracks on this dope joint are traditional call-and-response songs (w/origins in the work songs of African slaves, then African American church choirs picked it up and it soon became a significant element of pop music). You hear call-and-response's influence in many styles of music that we might not categorize as folk (although music played by self-taught performers and material from various traditional styles are considered folk) including blues, country, gospel & so on and songs like "Get Behind the Mule", "Cold Water" and others from Mule Variations (1999) while edgy and replete w/modern sounds are still essentially traditional call-and-response tunes and may correctly be labeled as "folk" even if Mr. Waits' creates a sound uniquely his own and therefore, as you so correctly stated, hard to categorize.

What is folk music? By definition it is music of folk.
Is Jazz folk? Is Blues folk? Is punk folk I would say, yes.
