      Easy to imply that in one or two, maybe three or so families from Syria, well mate let me tell you that it is a different story here in Sweden...

    • @alktrio06
      @alktrio06 8 років тому +9

      I cannot speak for your countries experiences in Sweden, but I will say that the US has done alot for countless many over the centuries, but has also had a history of limiting certain immigrants. I myself do not understand this, as our country is based on immigrants and there is a net positive to letting them in. To respond to your comment though, doing the right thing is not always the easy thing, that is why it is called the right thing to do.

      ''which has ruined everything Sweden's old generation has built.''
      it hasn't, sweden is still sweden, you're overeacting.
      besides the old has to eventually make way for the new, ''swedens old generation'' had to tear down the previous structure to build the current one.
      and your analogy with tigers and wolves is awful, as if Syrians are a different species.
      more like putting a pack of German Shepherds into a cage with a pack of Labradors.
      and what would happen if you did that?

    • @joheyjonsson2825
      @joheyjonsson2825 8 років тому +27

      As a Swede, I can't see how keeping humans safe in any way makes my country less awesome. Sweden was built on the labour of immigrants, from Finnish, Dutch, French, and German workers building our railway network and working in the mines, to the modern refugees manning our pizza places, our burger joints, our subway systems, and cleaning our public buildings. The older generation you talk about is in part made up of refugees from wars now over, from starvation, and political persecution.
      Yes, the government needs to do more to help the people already here, but saying "Sorry, we can no longer care that your children are being killed, that your elderly starve to death, because we find it too hard" is seriously a disgrace to a country that prides itself on its views on equality and freedom.
      A roof over their heads, a warm bed, and food to eat are things the Syrian refugees are walking across Europe to find. They face death on the Mediterranean, they get shot at by European soldiers, just to find safety. The new asylum laws in Sweden makes me feel sick and ashamed.
      Also, humans are humans, no matter their origin. Please, stop it with the analogy of different species.

      Most of the refugees who arrive in Rockford work very closely with Catholic Charities, so stop by their office or give them a call. I'm sure they'd welcome volunteer help. Thanks so much for commenting and for sharing your welcome to Rockford! -John

      +vlogbrothers - How closely are all of these refugees going to work with the Jewish community, the gay community and others considering how bigoted and racist many arabs are and have been for centuries?. I just want an answer because a lot of this video is profoundly sugar coated with a very one-sided narrative.

    • @manuc.260
      @manuc.260 8 років тому +52

      +FacheChanteDeux Same can be said about any culture, religion or nationality. How can the christian world work with the Jewish community after the Holy Inquisitation, or Europe after the Holocaust? How can Britain work with a gay community after they passed laws against homosexuality (repealed only in the 60's)? How can the US work with black people after they passed laws to avoid being in the same physical place with them?
      Not everyone is their cultural history, neither the cultural history defines what to expect in the future.

    I've worked with refugees who are resettled in the US. It's very hard but let me tell you a very good story from a kid I worked with.
    I was talking to him about his life and I asked what he disliked most about the US and he told me he didn't like the racism and prejudice towards him and others. I asked him what he liked most and he said "That I can see problems in this country and work to fix them". He was 11 at the time when he told me that, and is now starting his first year of high school. I asked him what he wanted to be and he said he wants to be a doctor and a lawyer, so he can save people and protect them.

    My great grandparents came to the US from Poland. They were seeking freedom from Russia. When my great grandfather arrived in the states he knew hardly anyone and fought to learn English. He saw this country as a land of opportunity away from oppression. He even refused to let his family members speak Polish in his household because he was so proud to be in the USA.
    My ex-boyfriend's family came to the US after the Bosnian war broke out. They fled Bosnia with what they had on their backs. They ran to Austria and America took them in under asylum. They weren't bad people, they were people that got caught in a bad situation.
    Whenever I hear people say, "No Syrian refugees in America!" it breaks my heart. My great grandfather came here seeking freedom from countries that kept taking over his home. A person very close to me fled in order to save the lives if his family. And we want to turn ALL the people of a country away? A country that was terrorized by the people we fear? It makes me so sick.

    • @SirBagman87
      @SirBagman87 8 років тому +3

      The difference is your great grandparents weren't terrorists, or at least didn't have the possibility of being terrorists.

      haha they did! terrorism started in poland and ukraine and russia directly in the period of russian oppression about which the commenter is speaking!!!!!!!!! you might know marx, but bakunin, the true founder of communism and also of anarchism, was a russian from that period and is one of the main encouragers of what become modern day terrorism.
      people fleeing from russia and that whole area were also trying to flee from the terrorism in addition to the oppression.
      ps +LPlandOFazul, not trying to attack you! i hope you dont mind my comment!

  • @MrJH101
    @MrJH101 8 років тому +307

    Two years? Thats gotta suck. Although it took my family about the same as well during the Post-Vietnam War era. They got here after fleeing from communism and the genocides that took place shortly after the US left. Thankfully, the media then wasn't like how it is now or people would've vilified them like they do now.
    People always complain how easy it is to get into the US and be citizens without ever recalling how difficult it was for their family to do so.

    I come from a refugee family escaping the Vietnam War. I was the first generation born in the United States and the proud brother of 2 other siblings born here in the United States. Both my refugee parents went to college and got a proper education. My dad went to A&M and my mom went to TCC. Both are now productive members of society. All three of us (my siblings and I) went to college. My sister is now an eye doctor. My brother joined the US ARMY because he believed he owed a debt to this country and wished to serve it. I became an IT manager with my degree. I think we really need to give these people a chance. They came here with hopes and dreams. And when John said that he hopes that we should not disappoint that refugee family, I hope our country lives up to the hopes and dreams of that family. It did for mine.

    I came here straight from Dear Hank & John. :)
    It's so touching to see that their family has made it to the US but it also reminds me of the sad fact that many people (such as one of my uncles) think that most refugees, particularly Muslim ones, are mainly criminals that must be kept out of the country. Thank you John for showing how refugees, like the rest of us, are human and deserve to feel safe somewhere they can call home.

    I can almost measure how much I love a video by how disturbing the comment stream becomes. How dare you urge us toward a compassionate response to hardship for those _different_ than ourselves. It was, after all, people "like ourselves" that made America "great" in that glorious (imagined) past, seems to be the gist of so many. Thanks for the vlog, John.

      David Lowery Illinois has a lot of problems, sure. Mostly it has a frustrating stalemate in its state government that has gone on for more than a year. However I would hardly say that it is the least desirable state in the union, it depends on who you are. I'm pretty sure that if I were a trans woman I would find South Carolina far less inviting for me than Illinois. Also, while Chicago is gripped with a financial crisis, police brutality, and a huge gang problem fueled by systemic poverty on the South Side, it also has seen incredible business growth in the past 4 years, as well as a huge increase in both housing stock and real estate prices, not to mention all the rental-units being built.
      The point that I'm trying to make is that while granted this family has not relocated to Beverly Hills, I am sure that they are grateful to have this opportunity, and Illinois is grateful to have them here to help us fix our problems.
      Welcome to Illinois, Mufak, Nada, and your family! We are lucky to have you.

      Rockford has actually made tremendous strides in the right direction in the last several years! There's a huge new sports facility in a budding downtown environment, further cementing Rockford as a hub of midwest sports, and some medical developments which will make the city even more of a regional medical hub, too. Rockford's not perfect, but why bash it (Rockfordians' favorite pasttime) when on the other hand, there is so much good in the city?

      I'm a conservative, and I don't believe in a ban on Muslims, temporary or otherwise. I do think that integration would be easier for Muslims into another Muslim country, but of course we still need to step up and take refugees, as long as proper, extensive background checks are made. I don't see this as a particularly anti-conservative channel, with exception to the lgbt community issues, which I can respectfully disagree on. Not all conservatives are Trump, or even unable to enjoy someone's content without agreeing with their perspectives.

      Well, to be fair, Trump has the highest unfavorablilty rating in the history of either party. It's just that the rest of us were divided amongst the reasonable candidates because they didn't have the humility or intelligence to take one for the team and drop out (Looking at you, Marco Rubio and John Kasich) I understand your point of view, but we're all human here, and even the people who want a ban until we can put stronger screening processes in can be understood with some effort. Please take that into consideration before congratulating John on 'driving out all the Republicans', or whatever, when he himself has stated he's voted for both Republicans and Democrats, as well as independents. In addition, he wrote a blog post in response to a Tumblr ask questioning whether the asker (a republican) could be a nerdfighter with his political views fishingboatproceeds.tumblr.com/post/30739639686/i-am-republican-but-kind-of-a-rino-republican

      yes, they are cherry picked. most refugees pouring into Germany are young men without families. Some families have been okay with filming but wouldn't want to be highlighted on a thumbnail. Some haven't wanted to be filmed at all bc they fear persecution of their family. Families like this may not want the attention of being on the thumbnail (where anyone can see it without watching its content and seeing what a great family they ARE) ... bc it may target them for random acts of hostility in their new nation. I think it's great that John got to show them in a video, particularly inside our wonderful community, but a thumbnail could could bring them unnecessary harm.

    Yeah I'm all for nice families that want to embrace American values and traditions when the come here but everyone on the left wants to ignore the fact that Irish Catholics didn't want to kill Jews, Gays, Christians, and Americans. The far right would also have you believe that we need to ban all Muslims from entering the U.S. Neither side is correct in this case but I believe it far more dangerous to ignore ideologies that breed violence against women, LGBT, and other groups that don't please Allah. Nominal and peaceful Muslim families aside, ISIS recruits Muslims and others with violent tendencies and bribing them with American freedom is like making deals with Hitler or conceding more land to the Palestinians: they'll never be satisfied until the world caves to Islam.

      Israel is the greatest nation in the Middle East and has one of the most advanced societies in the world. Aww screw it, let's give their small chunk of land to the bigots and rapists.

      In Islam you can't target anyone verbally or physically if they don't have the same ideals as you that's banned in Islam 👍

      Ahmed Abdallah and I'm sure most Muslims feel the same way you do but that doesn't change the fact that there is a rapidly growing radical movement that is rooted in intolerant Islamic doctrine and encouraging young people all over the globe to commit atrocities. There were at least three separate horrific murder events in the past week that are linked to this movement.

    Thank you John. Thank you this is probably your best video. As an Italian-American. As an American as a human being. thank you for this video. It shows perspective in a way that no other have covered.

    John's level of empathy is uncommon. I think of him like a needle in a haystack and Nerdfighteria as a collection of similarly sharp needles. John and Hank are like magnetized needles that attract the other needles. Demographically, we are a small part of the population, but it feels significant in the space of these videos and their communications. So I am encouraged to continue to follow in the same way and do what I can to help these people who suffer through each day, being seen as lesser, expendable humans.
