Welcome to the family Rover :) I’m sure he’ll be a perfect cosy haven for me on those occasions that I need to bail on a crazy-camp-gone wrong, or having a rest between adventures. This turned out to be a shorter road trip than I'd planned due to the conditions on the mountain roads (this southern faerie can’t hack it). Back out with the rucksack next :D Hope you guys are good, less than 2 months till spring starts! Whoop 🌿🐻
You're hardly a faerie Clare. Most blokes wouldn't cope with what you do. Another great video. You almost make me think I can do it again. 😮 Here's to loads more safe but interesting stories. ❤
It warmed my heart when you stopped and immediately hopped out to check that they were OK. In my head, everyone making videos online would view that as a viral moment to generate likes and take their camera. You were straight into action. I'm probably wrong about my assumption of others, but it still made me smile.
I've been stuck in a layby in snow before and would have been there all day if it weren't for a kind group of lads stopping and physically pushing my car out, they were great. I'm a bit of a lone wolf and have developed a fair amount of distrust of other humans over the years but the kindness of strangers always reminds me that there is a lot of good out there 💚I couldn't do anything to help as they were really stuck in mud in that field but just wanted to check no one was injured and wait until help arrived
@WildBeare You showed your true nature, and if you'd been somewhere they couldn't call for help, you'd have been able to go for them. Sometimes, just a friendly face takes the edge off a scare. I appreciate you for it all the same.
Wrap your seatbelts around/through the door handles for safety. It helps stop anyone yanking the door open. Alternatively, use a ratchet strap strung across, which will stop pretty much anyone. I’d definitely go for some good hot water bottles, which can keep you nice and cosy without needing any power. Happy car camping! 😊
Ooh good idea, I do keep the doors locked when in the car but a nice fail-safe in case I forget :) that's a great shout about a hot water bottle! It never occurred to me as I don't take them camping, too heavy, but weight doesn't matter when car camping so might add one to my car kit thank you
Land Rovers typically have a "super lock" function which physically disconnects the door handle mechanism when locked, so it's very unlikely anyone could open the doors.
I used to camp in my Land Rover loads. The boot opening upwards is a must. You can throw a tarp over it and attach two corners of it to the wheel arches with a couple of bungees. Then the tarp goes up and over the boot and then just guy it out. It makes like a gazebo type thing at the back of the car and take just a couple of minutes to do. Great for having a brew in the rain or cooking! Happy camping. Hope you get many a fun year out of Rover. 😃
Yess sounds so good! I'd love to try it with the tarp over the back in a more secluded location, I tried that with previous Landy but his boot opened out not up so this one will be better for that :) Thank you, have a lovely week
Using the wheel arches and bungees to secure the car end of a tarp is a totally fantastic idea!! That never occurred to me! 😃 thanks for the tip! 👏🏼 (Yeti owner here 🙋🏻♀️)
Winter tires are no joke. All seasons are made out of a different composite that stay softer in low temps; helps gain traction on icy roads. They're expensive but worth it.
In Quebec, we have to be « geared » with winter tires 'by the law' from beginning of December to late March. Yeap! Winter tires is not a joke in « minus zero countries »... if you do not want to visit the ditches!
Winter tires are not at all common in the UK. I'm sure they exist, but I don't know anyone who has used them in the UK. In England at least, temperatures don't go much below freezing, at least during the day. I'm sure Scotland is colder.
@@jrd33 honestly I don't really know much about that area of the world other than it rains alot. That sounds much more tolerable compared to what I've been dealing with. I live off the east side of Lake Erie in New York and it has been a brutal winter. Lots of snow and sub freezing temps constantly. We do salt our roads but they've cut back due to environmental concerns (with good reason), so getting around is tough. Winter tires are almost a necessity depending on how far you drive. I hope everyone makes it through the winter safe and sound!
Blimey Claire you worry me! Nice to see Rover joining the Wildbeare crew. I don't blame you getting back to our neck of the woods after one night at all! I was up in Essex this weekend and pulled over to get my lil' stove out for a hot coffee and the looks I got were crazy! People seemed to look at me like I was a nutter! I always carry a small rucksack with tea, coffee, milk and a tin or 4 of all day breakfasts! I won't go hungry if ever my car breaks down or the roads become impassable. I like to be prepared plus who knows what can happen on the M25😂
Haha yes I prefer to be alone in a layby to avoid the strange looks 😄 so nice to have it all stocked up isn't it, I agree it's a nice feeling to know that whatever happened or even if you got stuck somewhere a while you'd be ok. Our lil homes on wheels :D thanks for watching
@WildBeare It is my pleasure watching! You bring a lil' ray of sunshine to my life and I get a nice "floofy" feeling when I see you have made another vid for us! 🤣🤣🤣 I hope you haven't been out in these winds we have had this week! Jeez! I almost took off walking down the road and I swear my car hit Mach 1 last week with the tailwind!🤣🤣🤣
There are only 2 young ladies this old goat follows on UA-cam. You Claire, and a young lady named Rosa here in the United States. I enjoy following you for your amazing camping adventures and Rosa for her car camping escapades which have a tendency to wind up at hot springs. Now that your starting to car camp in “Rover”, you should check out Rosa’s adventures in her Honda Element, she call’s Elrond. She just reconfigured Elrond to make it a more comfortable home, as she’s been living in Elrond for about 6 years. @@billrivenbark8983 I agree. What is the point of camping in your car in nasty weather BY YOURSELF? An attractive woman alone in her car. She is either incredibly brave or incredibly foolish.
Yeah, I think generally the biggest dangers when camping are 1) your own misjudgment, 2) bad weather, 3) having an accident, or 4) (in some countries) animals. Of course, one shouldn't be naive and especially if you camp in a busy area or you don't know the area well, it makes sense to have some precautions against bad intentioned people in place. But unless you camp in an area that has very high crime rates, it's more likely to be hit by a car or break your ankle than be attacked by a human being.
Haha yes, it's true, but depends where you're camping. I feel fine camping in the mountains, but close to home near the towns and cities you have all sorts wandering around so I have to be very stealthy to hide (very high crime rates near where I live and a fair amount of bad experiences with unfavorable folk too)
Yippee! As much as I love your camping videos. Whenever you’re making it work with a twig and a tarp, I’m amazed, but as a comfy person myself. I also like to see others be nice and cosy.
I have a Honda Element with 219K miles on my odometer! My Ellie keeps going! Elements were only sold here in North America, but some have made it across the pond in various European countries. Most Honda dealerships won't work on them over in Europe because they were only sold here. There is still nothing on the market that compares to my Element, as the seats fold down, to the side, and can be completely removed to give an open rear area for car camping. Many people have lived in them and converted them into campers. I hope you have great adventures with Rover! I hope they are as much fun as can be.
I may have mentioned before, I was a Land Rover Experience instructor at Eastnor for 20 Years and by far he easiest vehicle to impress someone with was the Freelander, we mainly had diesel automatics. Very easy to drive, LOADS of grip, VERY good in the conditions you were driving in. Hope you have Years of fun with Rover. The FL 2 was a big step up from an already great vehicle.
Ive got a slightly older (2010) Freelander 2. I will say that from the research that I did before buying, you need to stay ontop of the service intervals and get the oils changed in the transfer box, back axle (diff) and haldex. Get those done and it should be fine.. Oh and the cambelt and water pump too. They are reputed to be the most reliable of the Land Rover marque.. Just remember, the Freelander 2 is great on the snow that you drove on so be cautious but dont be too scared, enjoy !! Loved the video!!
Well done for keeping safe, when you stopped by the lake I thought you were going to have a swim I thought no not even she’s that crazy beautiful view of the lake stay safe ❤❤
Watching with headphones, 4.40 I thought you had a secret friend with you but realised it probably made it's presence during editing 😉. Brilliant again Claire thank you for sharing.
Hi Claire, glad you got Rover to take over from Landy! I'm sure it will look after you for many more years. A little Karcher window vac is great to help remove condensation inside as well can be usefull for window cleaning at home. Take care Wildbeare! 👀👍
Lovely video, next time you need new tires go for all season ones, make a massive difference in snow and ice conditions much safer. All the best and good luck with the new Landy.
Great video as always. If I could like it twice, simply for the fact that you always use the Welsh place names (Eryri, Llyn Tegid, etc...), I would. It's hugely appreciated.
Rover, you're a handsome machine. You are in good hands with Claire and Buns. 😊 Glad you made it through the white knuckle winter drive in the mountains okay. Have a great week Claire. 🌲🏕🌲
There's something super safe and cozy being inside a car in a storm. It's so nice and comforting to be self-contained and self-sufficient. It's all weathe- tight and safe and sound and it's just the best feeling ever!
How cool is that, a queen-size bed in the trunk. I often sleep in the car for a night before my trips. But I only fold down the passenger seat because I have a compact car. I once pinched a nerve and had a numb feeling in my left hand for three weeks - but my physiotherapist fixed it. In winter, the best sleeping bag is just good enough because the car feels like a freezer on the inside.
Stayed in Askam in furness over Christmas one year and did the Lakes district. The conditions were exactly like that. Coming from Aus i couldnt get my head arpund just how natrow the roads were, how slippery and how much water their was. Great adventure and hiking but 👍
Good luck with Rover! My 2008 Freelander has been sat on my driveway rotting away since November 23 with a whole list of issues! The rear seats bottoms do fold forward so the rears fold completely flat. Another top tip is that you can wade through flood water upto 50cm whoch is basically upto the intakes on the sides of the wings.
Cheers Rover and Claire! Here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains we've got bears and mountain lions so car camping just feels safer to me. If you add a 12V/100AH lithium battery or two to Rover, you can add an inverter and run an electric mattress pad and/or electric blanket which makes a huge difference even if you only use it/them to preheat things before getting into bed. I also use the additional battery to run a quiet little computer fan which is ducted out the window crack and that really cuts the condensation in addition to keeping the oxygen up and the CO2 down.
Mud and snow tyres and the right setting of the traction control will get a freelander 2 through most things. Loose the roof cross bars unless you like the whistle along with the sound of them and they kill the fuel economy. I bought an additional carpeted boot floor panel s/h to create a false floor along with some shallow industrial storage trays to hide stuff out of sight.
Its great seeing you do your thing around my local area .. i love all your little adventures, but the ones around north/mid wales where i know all the roads and understand the conditions etc you are putting up with is great... loved this
Hello, Claire. Glad you got another vehicle to have your adventures in. Nice of you to check on the other driver. God bless you and stay safe on your trips.
One of the things I do when wild winter camping, when I have a fire I place stones right next to the fire. Wrap them well in a wool blanket and put them in the car or tent. They make great mini heaters and stay warm for hours
You can get a sock type awning full wrap around to go over the tailgate and have it as an awning very secure spacious epically when in a car to camp. Got one for my VW transporter for showering in.
welcome to the Freel2 club, its a significant upgrade on the freelander 1 you had. put some decent tyres on it ( michelin cross climate 3's for example) and it'll get you everywhere you need to go. the terrain response wheel is amazing - strangely though i always found the mud setting to be better for snow! Enjoy.
Freelander 2 is one of the best and most reliable cars I’ve ever owned. I’m not sure you did this but your back seat bases fold up and forwards before you put the back down to make it level.
I had a small hatchback car, and made a tent that went over the lifted door. It added a room at the back so I could stand up, have a little table for cooking, etc. I see that there are several on Amazon, none as simple or as cheap as the one I made, but with far more features and convenience. I camped with it in the winter too. Oh, and here in Western Canada the snow is usually (though not always) gone by May.
Congratulations to you and Rover!!! Looking forward to all your new adventures. You've given me some ideas on how I can extend camping season here in Alaska!!! Love your new travel companion!!!! Keep rocking these camping videos!!!
I adopt the attitude that my car is nothing more than my tent, so I only carry (with a couple of additions) what I would normally carry when hiking with my rucksack. My main task when starting to car camp was how to keep the cold beneath me from coming up and making me freeze. I solved this by buying a length of carpet underlay with the highest 'R' rating, and then place my NeoAir on top. I also place two extra pieces of underlay in the back seat footwell.
Another great video Claire, and hi to Rover 😊 I can thoroughly recommend all season tyres, they make a huge difference in winter and are fine for summer as well. Looking forward to the next video already!
Very good thanks for sharing 👍 Your very hardcore and gutsy, makes me want to kit my van out and go for it myself around the Lake District (home) no snow at the moment but still looks enjoyable. Keep them coming 👌💪
Nice to see you to see you again claire back out looks abit cold and nice land-rover should do you ok for your camping good video nice start of your new year be nice to see more of you as the year goes on stay safe and stay healthy one life enjoy blessed be
I recently converted an old LDV Convoy minibus into a camper van and now go out camping with my cat Sox. There is a layby on the Peak District I love going to - just park up and no one around for miles. Very cosy.
I love a car camp. I've got the same sort of set up in my Mitsubishi outlander, the back seats go flat and since I'm a short arse I can lie perfectly flat and still have space for my gear box and dog. I even have space left to cook in it. I'f someone tried to break into mine well I was in it they'd be in for a shock when the land shark greeted them. Love the videos, stay safe.
If you haven't already, investing in some all season tyres might add a little extra safety on wintery rural roads. Amazing how many 4x4s come with summer tyres these days, esp when they are old cars and someone wanted to save a few quid.
Rover was made up pretty neat as we say here in the states (you looked like you was snug as a bug in the rug) that’s a good thing. Thanks for taking us along. Stay warm, stay dry, stay safe until next time ☮️ out my friend.
I used to carry a little tub of the brown rocksalt to sprinkle infront and behind my drive wheels on my old motorhome if I thought it was going to snow. Having that foot of good grip saved me from having to "dig out" a couple of times. Enjoy Landie mark 2.
Hi if camping out as you are, do not cover your windscreen incase you need to leave quickly. We full-time in a motorhome and always ready to move off, twice so far.
Love it. Wasn't sure if I would but then I remembered it's you and well I just knew I would. Very cool indeed. Reminds me of the days I would camp overnight at a trailhead before I would start a trail next morning. Thanks for bringing me back to some good memories and to see you create some new ones. Blessings to you WildBeare from NY.

A snuggle safe microwave heat pad lasts 12hours plus full of safe gel in a tough plastic disc.
Multi purpose.

Stayed in Askam in furness over Christmas one year and did the Lakes district. The conditions were exactly like that. Coming from Aus i couldnt get my head arpund just how natrow the roads were, how slippery and how much water their was. Great adventure and hiking but 👍
its always a pleasure to watch your vids Claire❤
Good luck with Rover! My 2008 Freelander has been sat on my driveway rotting away since November 23 with a whole list of issues!
The rear seats bottoms do fold forward so the rears fold completely flat.
Another top tip is that you can wade through flood water upto 50cm whoch is basically upto the intakes on the sides of the wings.
Make sure you check the one way value in the air box
Boot, lorries, driving on the left side of the road!!! I love the far side of the planet as much as being a wild beare 😊Iou
Happy travels with Rover😊really enjoy your vlogs❤love being out in nature.
Great idea🧐👍🏻
Mud and snow tyres and the right setting of the traction control will get a freelander 2 through most things. Loose the roof cross bars unless you like the whistle along with the sound of them and they kill the fuel economy.
I bought an additional carpeted boot floor panel s/h to create a false floor along with some shallow industrial storage trays to hide stuff out of sight.
It's summer here in Australia, as someone who loves the cold I envy you right now! I'll be so happy when winter comes. Nothing more relaxing.
Llyn Tegid is so peaceful, thanks for a great adventure in the new wee rover.
Looking forward to joining you on your new adventures with Rover 😊
Its great seeing you do your thing around my local area .. i love all your little adventures, but the ones around north/mid wales where i know all the roads and understand the conditions etc you are putting up with is great... loved this
A new video from Claire! Always makes my night shift better, Rover looks like he will serve you well as a camping companion 😊
Fantastic Claire❤️👌
Hello, Claire. Glad you got another vehicle to have your adventures in.
Nice of you to check on the other driver.
God bless you and stay safe on your trips.
One of the things I do when wild winter camping, when I have a fire I place stones right next to the fire. Wrap them well in a wool blanket and put them in the car or tent. They make great mini heaters and stay warm for hours
Welcome to the Wild Ones Community Rover! Loads of love and hope for some great adventures with Claire❤
Me too
For 🦊 Sake!!! Hahaha those socks are a vibe! 😂 love it!!
It’s cold and snowy here in Maryland, perfect vibe for watching
i love all of your videos. you are great Claire
Awww, welcome Rover. So glad you kept our Wild one and BunBun warm and safe. Loved the tinkly piano music.
❤️🎹🎹🎹❤️
Great video and yes it's freezing. Great adventures ❤
Congratulations to you and Rover!!! Looking forward to all your new adventures. You've given me some ideas on how I can extend camping season here in Alaska!!! Love your new travel companion!!!! Keep rocking these camping videos!!!
This is just some light winter conditions on the roads. Get som winter tires.
Morning wild beare I also slept my first wild off grid in my converted camper car
Love the Freelander doing the car’s part just so well.
( Compared to the massive Defenders that the locals round here roll to the shopping in )
Another great video Claire, and hi to Rover 😊
I can thoroughly recommend all season tyres, they make a huge difference in winter and are fine for summer as well.
Looking forward to the next video already!
Very good thanks for sharing 👍
Your very hardcore and gutsy, makes me want to kit my van out and go for it myself around the Lake District (home) no snow at the moment but still looks enjoyable.
How cool you've got another Freelander 2... They're such a great vehicle... Ideal for what you get up to !
Happy for you 😊😊😊nice rover 🎉🎉🎉
I used to carry a little tub of the brown rocksalt to sprinkle infront and behind my drive wheels on my old motorhome if I thought it was going to snow. Having that foot of good grip saved me from having to "dig out" a couple of times. Enjoy Landie mark 2.
The Landy looks great Claire... may you have many a good night in him 🙏🚙🥰🍀😘
Hi if camping out as you are, do not cover your windscreen incase you need to leave quickly. We full-time in a motorhome and always ready to move off, twice so far.
Best Landy out there the Freelander 2 i have had 3 since 2012 i always change em after 4 years but they are amazing cars !!!! Go well in all !!
Omg I was puckered on that car ride!😱
But the car camp was nice and cozy.🥰
Such a kind lovely person. More videos please Clare.
Congrats with your new ride,F🦊S! 😉
Awwwww❤ got Rover back, that's great 🎉
Wait. ..... You had Landy .... Now Rover... Is it not the same. Looks much like the same💗😁
Like the new rover Claire, can’t wait to see new adventures
Wishing many happy miles in Rover!🎉
